Hawaii Five-0 Review: The Brothers McGarrett?

by at . Comments

"Aloha ke kahi I ke kahi (We Need Each Other)" was so jam-packed with car chases, bomb-throwing terrorists, dire hostage situations and secret possible-but-also-totally-bananas family connections, there was barely a second to catch your breath.

Hawaii Five-0 Premiere Scene

All of which makes sense - there is A LOT going on as season 4 of Hawaii Five-0 begins, and this episode did its absolute best to touch on all of it.

Is Kono still on the run with Adam? (Yep.) Is Wo Fat in the middle of something mysterious, as usual? (Uh-huh.) Can Danny find time in the middle of high stakes hostage situation/ terrorist car chase to still get in the best Hawaii Five-0 quotes of the night? (Would it be H50 if he didn't?)

But action aside, what really stuck with me about this episode was the final minutes. Could Wo Fat really be related to McGarrett? I had to rewind and watch that scene and rewatch, just to make sure I hadn't misheard him (though not sure what I could have misheard him asking Bergman about...maybe to check and see if Wo Fat is an Other?).

The skittish, mysterious Mrs. McGarrett was one of the most intriguing parts of Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 to me; her secrets, and the way her relationship with Steve is effected by them, defy easy explanation or solution, and gave the season a nice, spiky story to have running in the background.

It had never occurred to me, however, that her secret could have been one this big...or this bizarre. For me, it was a great, invigorating mystery to start the season with, though one that I have to wonder about actually being resolved any time soon.

One situation that seems like it's going to be resolved a lot more quickly: Kono's life on the lam with Adam. We know they're going to get her back to the island soon, but will it be in triumph over the Yakuza, or because Adam won't be able to outrun them? Either way, the pacing of this plotline is brisk and engaging, and kept me on my toes.

Chi McBride's SWAT Captain Grover was another nice resurrection of a character from the original show's mythology, as well as a brief (but vocal!) reminder that, though Five-0 plays by their its rules, not everyone is impressed by it. McBride's Grover was part of a proud tradition of 5-0 guest appearances - brief, but impactful. I dug his swagger. The door's open for more appearances from McBride this season, which I certainly hope will come to pass.

This premiere left me with more questions than answers about the fourth season, but hey, that's what a good season premiere should do. I'm desperate to find out about this most unusual branch in the McGarrett family tree, but what are you most excited about for season 4? Kono's adventure abroad? More carguments?

I don't like Catherine--I quit watching when she started showing up more often. But I thought I'd go watch now that it's on Friday, not at the same time as Haven. And all of a sudden I remembered why I liked it so well! Great show. Non-stop action, my heart was racing the entire hour! Could still do without Catherine.

One last comment. I really enjoyed chi as Captain Grover. Stripping down to his skivvies and then striding back to his team rattling off his reconnaissance info was impressive. I hope he shows up in future episodes. Based on his hostage approach, me-thinks he may have navy-seal Steve tendencies. 😉

Cont--
But back to the action! ☺ Steve was back as Navy-seal Steve. Danno was back having Steve's back, Chin was back and outstanding channeling Navy-seal Steve. Kono and Adam, the titanic looking scene was sweet and sad. I love Cath (that scene with Steve awww, very sweet). but I really enjoy kick-ass Kono in action. Looks like maybe we'll get that next week or very soon!!!! I still don't think Steve and Wo-fat are half-brothers. Wo-fat has skills, so I am thinking Doris worked undercover with him or his father or.... And the line "you can't handle the truth!" ?!! Made me chuckle.

Awesome premier epi for S4. What a great evening, reading the tweets from Lenkov, DDK and AOL while waiting for PDT airing. I admit, I couldn't wait and immediately re-watched..gotta love technology : ) Highly recommend re-watching :) The heart stopping action with amazing explosions, car flips ...the Navy-seal Steve helo fight in mid-air and shoot-outs topped with totally unexpected plot twists. OMG! Shades of S1. Made my heart go flippity flop : ) I am thrilled that H50 is back. And on that subject, shirtless Steve made an appearance. Gotta love that!
Loved that just about every question I had over the summer was touched upon in some form or other. It was great seeing everyone but I didn't get to see or hear about cutie Fong : ( Especially enjoyed the scene where Danno was talking about Gabby while Steve was performing CPR...loved that he could still give advice to Danny about not saying anything to a woman unless he means it. But back to the action, it was awesome! Steve was back as Navy-seal Steve. Danno was back having Steve's back, Chin was back and outstanding channeling Navy-seal Steve. Kono and Adam, the titanic looking scene was sweet and sad. I love Cath (that scene with Steve awww, very sweet). but I really enjoy kick-ass Kono in action. Alex is not on twitter. He did it through a CBS site. DDK would not lie. I loved the episode, lots of action. I did not think it was cheesy at all.
Loved that they showed Steve's feelings for Catherine, although he still can't admit it. They will have a rocky season, but will be together in the end. I still can't believe there are people thinking Catherine is taking Kono's place. Also someone commented that Grace Park did not want to be on the show. I would love to see that in writing or on video. Or just another rumor or opinion without fact. I agree with some of the others, I think Steve may suspect Wofat is his mother's son, only because she won't tell him what happened, so he is doing what a detective does, investigates. I'm still leaning towards they are not related, blood wise anyway.

Frankly, what i'm thinking is that Mrs. McGarret (Steve's mother) had an assignment to kill a man (wo fat's father) and ended up sleeping with him and therefore having Wo Fat. Then somehow she ended up killing his father anyway, either out of duty or accidently. I really hope I'm wrong though because that just seems so obvious...and it would only make McGarret and Wo Fat half brothers. Plus I like dramatic surprises so when I get to the point where I can guess what's going to happen I quit enjoying the show so much :(

Maryeliza: was it really Alex tweeting? Daniel Dae Kim said that Alex is not on twitter. What is his twitter name? I want to look for it! Thanks

Kono will be back midseason.
Chi will be on a lot of episodes this season.
There was an interview with Peter Lenkov and Alex online yesterday and they answered a lot of questions about what to expect this season.

Hawaii Five-0 Season 4 Episode 1 Quotes

Danny Williams: I just handed Wo Fat over to the feds--they're prepping him, getting him ready to transfer to a super max in Colorado.
Steve McGarrett: Did he say who was behind the attack?
Danny Williams: No, he wasn't feeling very chatty.

Adam Noshimuri: Are you sure you understand what this means?
Kono Kalakaua: No. But it's what we're gonna do. It's what we have to do.
