Hawaii Five-0 Review: The Brothers McGarrett?

at . Comments

"Aloha ke kahi I ke kahi (We Need Each Other)" was so jam-packed with car chases, bomb-throwing terrorists, dire hostage situations and secret possible-but-also-totally-bananas family connections, there was barely a second to catch your breath.

Hawaii Five-0 Premiere Scene

All of which makes sense - there is A LOT going on as season 4 of Hawaii Five-0 begins, and this episode did its absolute best to touch on all of it.

Is Kono still on the run with Adam? (Yep.) Is Wo Fat in the middle of something mysterious, as usual? (Uh-huh.) Can Danny find time in the middle of high stakes hostage situation/ terrorist car chase to still get in the best Hawaii Five-0 quotes of the night? (Would it be H50 if he didn't?)

But action aside, what really stuck with me about this episode was the final minutes. Could Wo Fat really be related to McGarrett? I had to rewind and watch that scene and rewatch, just to make sure I hadn't misheard him (though not sure what I could have misheard him asking Bergman about...maybe to check and see if Wo Fat is an Other?).

The skittish, mysterious Mrs. McGarrett was one of the most intriguing parts of Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 to me; her secrets, and the way her relationship with Steve is effected by them, defy easy explanation or solution, and gave the season a nice, spiky story to have running in the background.

It had never occurred to me, however, that her secret could have been one this big...or this bizarre. For me, it was a great, invigorating mystery to start the season with, though one that I have to wonder about actually being resolved any time soon.

One situation that seems like it's going to be resolved a lot more quickly: Kono's life on the lam with Adam. We know they're going to get her back to the island soon, but will it be in triumph over the Yakuza, or because Adam won't be able to outrun them? Either way, the pacing of this plotline is brisk and engaging, and kept me on my toes.

Chi McBride's SWAT Captain Grover was another nice resurrection of a character from the original show's mythology, as well as a brief (but vocal!) reminder that, though Five-0 plays by their its rules, not everyone is impressed by it. McBride's Grover was part of a proud tradition of 5-0 guest appearances - brief, but impactful. I dug his swagger. The door's open for more appearances from McBride this season, which I certainly hope will come to pass.

This premiere left me with more questions than answers about the fourth season, but hey, that's what a good season premiere should do. I'm desperate to find out about this most unusual branch in the McGarrett family tree, but what are you most excited about for season 4? Kono's adventure abroad? More carguments?

I didn't like this ep as much as others did. I found it to be a bit cheesy. Steve holding up a fully armed SWAT team with a handgun and releasing 4 terrorists to save his 'girlfriend', without facing any consequences, was where it started to lose me. The Wo Fat story arc is getting really old - they need to start moving it forward somehow with some answers. And the absence of Kono as part of the team is already noticeable. I just hope they dont try to fill that role with Catherine. I like her, but in a different context. But the banter between Steve and Danno was great and Chin was awesome.

So happy this show is back! It was a long summer with Alex! :)
Last season I though Steve and Wo Fat were brothers, however Peter Lenkov said that the connection between the two is not as obvious as you think, so they may not be brothers.
We had some great Danny and Steve moments, like when Steve was doing chest compressions on the bad guy and Danny took that time to tell him about Gabby!
Then when poor Danny's car exploded and he said he always thought Steve's driving would wreck the car. Was funny too.
I knew that the guy and girl took the location of Kono and Adam's safe house.
Captain Grover will be a huge obstacle for the team this season!
I really hope the ratings were good as I want this show around for a long time.

Henry Ian Cusick was the man who dropped his gun when you see the close up of the van after the firefight. He was the bloody face you saw just before McGarrett's chase. Speaking of that chase, the helicopter stunt was amazing. The scale and execution of that scene was movie worthy! I agree with @MaryEliza that I think the Wo Fat brothers idea we've all had and Steve has is a red herring. I recall Peter Lenkov saying that it's not going to be something that everyone has been expecting. I hope they aren't brothers, and I hope the writers have come up with a great twist to get around that idea.

It was an exciting epi, and that's what I hope a premiere to be! Making this even more cool, Alex O'Loughlin live-tweeted during the East Coast airing and added insight, humor, and a few personal asides. Like many of us, turns out Toast is one of Alex's favorite guest stars. I knew he had good taste. As to the WhoaFat mystery, who knows? Could be a red herring about the bros thing. A question: did Henry Ian Cusick's character die, was he even in the van that overturned and got shot to hell? I thought I only saw 3 bad guys in there.

I don't think the events between their departure and the ending of last nights episode would last 9 days. Wasn't Steve wearing the same shirt at the prison as he was at the docks? Speaking of which, Danny/Scott was totally checking out Steve/Alex's chest and abs when Steve was changing into the white shirt. You can see the lust and longing in his eyes.

Excellent episode!!!loved the alex stunts, loved danno asking steve on what to do with gabby.loved the return of catherine(thought the haters will pressure peter lenkov to not bring her back)I miss kono.
But kono fans should understand that Grace park doesn't want to continue,so they shouldn't be mad at peter lenkov..

I suspect both are sons of McGarrett, Sr. Wo Fat, a secret love child who destroyed the elder McGarretts' marriage when Doris found out. But she couldn't bring herself to kill her late husband's son. A lot of interesting and convoluted backstory potential. It could turn out that Chin Ho has known the truth from the beginning but with true Asian delicatesse chose not to reveal it.

Called them being brothers along time ago...I had a feeling when she let him go

As far as the slow boat to China goes, do we actually know an exact time line in terms of hours from departure to arrival? It's 4828 nautical miles from Hawaii to Hong Kong a ship traveling at 22 knots would take 9 days to get there. Other than that, Hawaii 5-O has rarely disappointed me and in this case they did not disappoint at all! Great episode! Glad the show is back!

How far is it from Hawaii to China? It didn't look like their ship was traveling very fast. I mean would Kono and Adam already have settled in to their secret shack when Chin called?

Hawaii Five-0 Season 4 Episode 1 Quotes

Danny Williams: I just handed Wo Fat over to the feds--they're prepping him, getting him ready to transfer to a super max in Colorado.
Steve McGarrett: Did he say who was behind the attack?
Danny Williams: No, he wasn't feeling very chatty.

Adam Noshimuri: Are you sure you understand what this means?
Kono Kalakaua: No. But it's what we're gonna do. It's what we have to do.
