Agents of SHIELD Review: Second Chances

by at . Comments

There was some freshness to this week’s Agents of SHIELD, as "Eye Spy" offered us a glimpse into pre-cinematic Coulson via the form of Akela Amador, his first protege.

Or, rather, a very brief compare and contrast of Coulson now and then.

Tracking a Mystery Woman

While I was thrilled to learn that Coulson has mellowed a bit and was more willing to give someone a second chance, I was actually a little disappointed that we didn't get more of Amador's observed changes in Coulson. It also seemed like she was overly willing to drop the subject when Melinda offered an explanation.

Of course, that also makes me wonder why Melinda hasn't noticed more since she has known Coulson a long time as well. Then again, what if she actually knows what happened in “Tahiti” and was actually there to help keep Coulson from figuring it out? So she is specifically is not asking him about the differences?

For this week, I was thrilled we got to see Melinda in action (however brief it was). The way she dodged the steak knife that Amador threw at here was down right cheer worthy.

On the flip side, we had the groan-worthy gag with Skye not being able to tell the difference between the safety and clip release on a hand gun. Here is a hint Skye: the safety is a flip lever, the magazine release is a push button. I know it was added for humor, but seriously, there are other ways to be funny.

For example, take later in the hour when Skye was trying to get Ward to “bromance” the guard because he was supposed to be Amador and seduce the him. That had me laughing well enough that I had to do a quick rewind to catch all of the dialog.

Additionally, Fitz and Simmons needing to do eye surgery on Amador while she was awake for the procedure - and watching Amador help Simmons do the injection into her eye - wasn't funny at all; in fact, it was actually kind of horrifying. Let’s move on.

Overall, I loved that the tone, tempo and pace of the episode. It was more spy-vs-spy and even with the expected humor quips that we get each week, it felt a little tense throughout.

So, I’m giving this episode 4.5 bionic exploding eyes in honor of Coulson’s cycloptic first protege. I hope she makes a full recovery.

I am really starting to enjoy this show. I think the Skye, Coulson and Ward characters have a ton of potential, not just as individuals but as a team. Great chemistry between the actors and some good stories so far, including this one. And I still think Skye is adorable. Chloe Bennett is not only a cutie but she can act. Fun show - looking forward to more.

What happened to Coulson ? I know he died, so that's fine but then I got to think : is he a robot ? A clone ? SOMETHING ! Just tell us already ! Lol, okay. Now I too enjoyed the spy vs spy episode. Though since Skye is a "spy" , who is she working for ? I loved the eye surgery, that woman had some balls !!! Injecting herself was pretty hardcore ! I really thought she had an ability... Then she turned out to be a cyborg ! even better !
Nice episode overall.

I think that by the time Amador asked, her eye had been removed. However, Miken is hinting at what I think the storyline will be- Coulson is part or whole machine. to date there have been no bruises or physical violence on his body for a reveal. Just a hunch.

I enjoy Coulson/Skye scenes.

I really liked this episode. I think what Amador saw that was different in Coulson wasn't on the outside or with his personality but it was inside him. That definitely raised a few more questions for me. Ward having to bromance the guy was funny. Fitz and Simmons having to take out Amadors eye was freaky they were more nervous than her I actually don't think she was nervous. The part in the van were Skye called Ward because they wanted l know where they could go to the bathroom and if they brought and snack and him just hanging up on them was funny. I can't wait till the next episode it looks really good. It looks like we'll find out more about Skye in the next episode.

of course they would not tell us what she noticed, that leaves us with two questions rather than one ! what she saw was not enough for her to fully understand "tahiti" but more than enough to scare her into silence when talking to agent may … yet she still trusted coulson with her life, which means coulson probably still is mostly coulson …

I think Amador asked "what they did" to Coulson, it had to do with her X-ray eye. Maybe she saw something in him or something. Really loving this show and this episode did a good job toning down the whole "we know the avengers" theme :)

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1 Episode 4 Quotes

Coulson: Have you seen Skye?
Ward: Not since weapons training.
Coulson: She stop saying bang when she pulls the trigger?
Ward: Mostly. Now if she can just learn the difference between the safety release and the magazine release, we will be making real progress.

Coulson: Maybe I should learn to fly. It's not too late right? I could learn. What do you like best, freedom, the view?
May: The solitude.
Coulson: Got it.
