The Vampire Diaries Review: How to Be a Hero

at . Comments

Yeah. So much for that fun freshman year, Elena.

Unless you consider it fun to tie up a nearly naked Damon Salvatore (wait for it...), force him to drink Vervain, stab yourself in the leg to get an omnipotent, ancient witch out of your head and then temporarily drop out of school to find your lost brother.

Because if that's the case, "True Lies" was an utter blast for this first-year college student!

In actuality, of course, no one had a very good time this week on The Vampire Diaries: Silas didn't get what he wanted; Matt died for the first time; Caroline was dissed by Tyler; and Katherine suffered a sinus infection. Let's break it all down, shall we?

Paul Wesley as Silas

BFFs to the Rescue! That would be Best Friends who Fight, of course. One of the early pleasures in The Vampire Diaries Season 5 has been the elevation of Matt and Jeremy to more than bit players among their supernatural surroundings.

Mock this "brain trust" at your peril, Damon. They just saved Katherine from Silas and dished out profound advice ("That's why people treat you like an object… "How are you gonna deal with your death if you can't deal with your own?") all over the place while they were at it. Seriously, I am a hunter. Plus, I work out? Jeremy apparently grew a sense of humor along with those biceps.

Broken on Through. Guess Kat Graham wasn't kidding when she told me we'd bear witness to The Other Side this season. It looks a lot like the woods and you're farther and farther away from your body the more time you spend there. Nothing too revealing here, really, but a very nice and moving scene between Matt and Bonnie.

Would it really have been too much for Alaric to pop in and say hello, though? Come on, Julie Plec. Give me Matt Davis or give me death. Temporary death, that is, so I can hang out with Matt Davis on The Other Side.

The Doctor is In… control of the Whitmore College conspiracy? Dr. Wes Maxfield is clearly up to something, and that something goes beyond being the sort of jerk who reminds you at every turn that he went to medical school. Why did he doctor (pun… intended!) Megan's death certificate? What does he know about Grayson Gilbert? How great a name is Grayson Gilbert?!? And is he working with Jesse?

Yes, Jesse. No way do I trust that guy! Granted, any man with two eyes and a working pulse would be attracted to Caroline Forbes, but he's coming on way too strong to simply be into this vampire for her beauty, enthusiasm, playfulness, kind heart, lovely smile... sorry, where was I? Oh, right.

Jesse pulled a classic sympathy move by telling a story about an ex-girlfriend that cheated on him. I'm not buying it. He was at the party when Megan got killed. He's somehow always around Elena and Katherine. And he makes no secret of his affection for Wes (yes, I'm calling you Wes. Deal with it, shady professor guy.) Caroline would be well served to stay far away. (Dammit!)

Called for Traveling. Can't say I saw Nadia turning on her acquaintance coming, but that's likely because we don't know anything about Nadia and her acquaintance. It's hard to know how one should react to a twist on characters one just met. So it seems the only appropriate response here is: Gypsies? Travelers?!? On the hunt for Stefan? Except for this one woman who has her own agenda? Consider me intrigued - and confused.

Silas the All Powerful. Dude is a little too powerful. He can control minds. He can't be killed. He's as handsome as Paul Wesley. The actor is absolutely killing it (pun, yes, intended) in this villainous role, but what made Klaus so terrific (sorry, what still makes Klaus so terrific; yes, I'm watching The Originals) were his many layers. He's a murderer, but he's vulnerable and often misunderstood. Plus, he can paint.

Silas just seems impossibly strong in every conceivable way right now. It makes him less interesting.

What did everyone else think of this Vampire Diaries Season 5 installment? Do we have another evil professor on our hands? Do you trust Jesse? What was your reaction to The Other Side? Where do you stand on Silas as the Big Bad? What does he want with Katherine? And, seriously, how dumb can Tyler be?!?

Prepare for the return of The Ripper below and sound off now.

I kinda agree with Robert, I also would consider cancelling the's getting boring! Bonnie ridiculous...dead-undead...please do something besides pining, whining...grrrr...I hate this nonsense!

oh please, you want ANOTHER villian with a sob story? That's really tired on this show.

Loved this episode! The show really feels so much lighter than last season and 5x02, especially, was well done. The pacing was excellent, the plot's interesting and suspenseful without all the melodrama, the dialogue was funny and snappy the way it used to be. It's also nice that they're getting back to focusing on the main cast and character-driven storylines again. Things are so much better now that the Originals (blech!) are finally, finally, finally gone. Matt, Jeremy and Katherine were great and funny and badass together. Such a suprise how awesome this threesome is! Glad Bonnie got that hug shee needed so much. It sounds like she's about to start working on a way to get back to the land of the living. Caroline and Elena at college was so much fun and their sassy, young dynamic was really refreshing after all the angst of last season. I hope Elena gets back to school soon. I like the idea of Silas as a really bad villain with cool powers but Paul Wesley is just so flat in his portrayal. Even though Silas has great lines, he's actually just as boring as Stefan. Jesse and the Professor are both creepy in a kind of delicious way. Can't wait to see where that's headed and the tie in to Dad Gilbert, too. Nadia is soooo shady! Damon and Elena were fantastic together in this episode. Their chemistry is as intense as ever and they've stil got such a push and pull relationship, yet they're actually turning out to be a suprisingly functional, 'normal' couple. Not interested in Ripper Stefan again so hopefully that's not what goes on now that Stefan's out of the box. He needs something new. I really can't wait until next episode which is something I haven't said since mid-season 3. Great job TVD!

I just don't agree that Silas isn't interesting. He is a true Bad ass unlike Klaus who was kinda not really the bad ass as he was ought to be. We need a villainous character who remains true to his character. And Silas may not be physically strong but his ability to play out people by using his mind control is amazing.Plus he is immortal so he is gonna stay for a long time. I am just excited to see what his next tricks are considering that Stefan is back and Silas gets to play with minds of Stefan, Elena and Damon and I am sure he will be the one to spill out the truth abt Bonnie's death too..

Bonnie is more annoying dead than alive, and that's saying a lot for me because I absolutely cannot stand her character. I hate these dead characters not being dead thing; death is meaningless now in this show. Last season when Stefan was locked in the box and Bonnie was dead I had HOPE for the show this season... yeah I forgot Julie plec runs this. Overall, this episode was okay.. Jesse is the character that's keeping me interested in this show, don't know why though considering I'm almost certain he's the vampire that killed the girl.

Human Katherine is great!
Silas is a funny psycho!
I loved seeing sarcastic, impulsive Damon in this ep.
Delenas scenes are really nice to watch. I love them!
Jeremy and Matt is actually part of the action.
Reminded me of season 1 and 2.
This show has great caracthers and great possible stories, just explore them1

i was hoping with second episode the mystery will be less than first one but it's becoming more with that doctor and jesse .actually i don't trust him ,he seems up to something specially when he was talking to elena with wood in his hand.
i liked Bonne and Matt scene so much ,Bonne got a real hug from her best friend in the other side.
And silas sometimes he seems powerful and other times not that much especially when had a fight with jeremy ,i dont know, like damon says "he's creepy".

And also Paul Wesley is absolutely smashing the double role. Is it possible for him to look any hotter?

Loving Matt this season. Damon and Elena are really annoying me. Has this show lost its oomph? Bring back Klaus (in TVD and The Originals)

I love this show.
This was a really good episode.
I love the Matt and Bonnie scenes, they were great.
I also like that they did not keep Stefan in the quarry for too long HOWEVER now we have Ripper Stefan again. I really want old Stefan back. I know Paul Wesley prefers playing Silas and Ripper Stefan but from the shows perspective I liked him better as nice sweet Stefan.
So how much shall we bet that Katherine will go to Whitmore and pretend to be Elena, as one can not just leave College and come back when they want to.
I like Jesse, but I fear he is bad.
I can not help but wonder how awkward the steamy Elena and Damon scenes are now that Nina and Ian are no longer dating.

The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 2 Quotes

He's deferring from enrolling and deferring from returning my phone calls. So I'm deferring from sleeping with him ever again.

Woman: You look just like Elena Gilbert.
Katherine: Actually, I'm much prettier.
