The Vampire Diaries Review: Devil of a Time

by at .  Updated at . Comments

If Kat has lived nine lives in her 500 years of being on the run, The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 12 definitely represented my favorite one.

I've been critical of this character for seasons now, calling the writers out on many occasions for making Katherine nothing but a plot device, someone to randomly show up from time to time in order to move the story in some direction.

But when she actually is the plot? When she's insulting Elena's hair and showing a vulnerable side to Stefan and ratting out Caroline's scandalous sexcapades on The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 11 and wondering how anyone could love Bonnie?

Yeah. I'm all aboard the Katherine train now. It was a really fun ride this week.

Cold, manipulative, good hair. You really are my daughter.

Cold, manipulative, good hair. You really are my daughter.

Katherine [to Nadia]
Cold, manipulative, good hair. You really are my daughter.

The installment was titled "The Devil on the Inside," presumably because Damon's monster came out to play with Enzo by hour's end.

But the entire episode was about characters trying to pretend they are someone they're not, trying to see themselves in the best light.

Damon is the obvious example. He's someone who believes he's at his best when he's with Elena and someone who finally realized this week how insulting it actually is to her to think he could poison her with his darkness.

But Elena Katherine gave Damon a perfect response to his little speech outside the party. Yes, she broke his heart. And, yes, she walked away smirking because that was her intention. But wasn't she also correct? Doesn't Damon need to be a good person on his own before he thrusts the pressure on Elena to make sure he remains that way?

It's like they always say: you need to love yourself before anyone else can really love you. In Damon's case, however, the problem is that he does seem to love himself... when he's embracing his own inner Ripper-ness.

Seriously. Some of us eat entire pints of ice cream or listen to sad mix tapes when we get dumped. Damon commits homicide. The guy's got issues and it shouldn't be on Elena (even if it was Katherine pretending to be Elena) to fix them.

Elsewhere, Caroline didn't want to think she was the person who would actually get slammed against a tree in a passionate lovemaking session sleep with Klaus. She scoffed at the "Prudy Trudy" nickname, but she likely preferred it over what Tyler was thinking and essentially said with his bared teeth: Hybrid Ho.

Leave it to Stefan to swoop in, deliver a winning line ("Drunk or not, she doesn't deserve that.") and later hit all the right notes when comforting Caroline.

Should these two just get together already? Vote now:

Tyler, of course, was also pretending from the moment he returned to Mystic Falls.

He wanted to leave his stint on The Originals behind, to toast to a new beginning at home. But it was a nice moment toward the end when he confided in Matt just how terrible things were for him in New Orleans - and how they've only grown worse.

Indeed, nearly every character was forced to face a truth about him or herself this week. Some came out of it better and stronger (Caroline was able to accept her Klaus-tastrophe and realize it didn't make her a bad person), while others just came out of it bloodier and more of a savage.

We're sort of seen this with Damon before, but Enzo makes the storyline feel fresh enough. He's been a winning addition so far.

Small Bites:

  • It's worth repeating: The Vampire Diaries Season 5 spent weeks and weeks saving the life of Bonnie, only to essentially ignore her since. Couldn't they just have killed her off?
  • My goodness. Matt has A LOT of friends. Did you see the turn out at that party?!? He must mix a mean drink at The Grill.
  • On an acting level, it was a lot of fun to watch Nina Dobrev toggle between Elena and Katherine.
  • Caroline Forbes should never not be cleaning. Especially in that tanktop.
  • Elena and Damon. Damon and Elena. I know there's a nickname in there somewhere. Best TVD line ever?

What did everyone else think? Check out this teaser for The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 13 and sound off now:

Ugh, I don't understand how this fandom can have so much sympathy and lenience for Damon, Stefan, and klaus, who have done, and continue to do, terrible awful things to people, but tyler, who has had just about the most unfortunate fate of any character on the show, is so unjustly hated. He had EVERY right to be angry with Caroline- everything he said was true. Klaus IS an unrepentant mass murderer. He DID ruin Tyler's life. He DID kill his mother, and Caroline DID screw him. Those are facts, plain and simple. All tyler did was call her out on her actions- if what he said upset her, then the she only has her self to blame. Stefan, on he other hand, was way out of line to punch him. If any character could empathize with that sort of betrayal, it would be him. Tyler has a right to HATE her for what she did. And he wasn't attacking her, he just couldn't bear to look at her and wanted her to leave.
And what's even more confounding is that after all this, people are still calling him an a******! I just can't with this fandom...

I agree! Taylor had every right to say what He did, and that pretend goody two Show had no right to hit Him for that.

I third this. Completely agree, Stefan had no right to punch Tyler. He should've just minded his own business. To be honest though, the writers are morons too. They play too much to the idiotic fan base where the power is in the fanbase's control. They did that with Klaroline Sex, Delena and now Stefan "standing" up to Tyler just to make Staroline fans happy. Every instance that I just mentioned only made this show worse. Writers need to know how to write and not let the fanbase tell them what to do, that's the difference between fanfiction and great stories.

This was one of my favourite episodes ever! I adore Katherine and I knew she would be so much fun. I really hope they aren't bringing Elena back in like the next episode already! She could be gone for good for all I care. The other highlight was Stefan hitting Tyler. I mean I get why Tyler is upset but he left and it was over and besides I just loved how Stefan defended Caroline like THAT! I mean I've never seen Stefan doing something like it …I squealed and my Staroline -Heart went wild with love for those two :))

This episode was horrible. Seems like the writers are grasping at straws each week. Season 1 and Season 2 were my favorites. Damon and his pining are getting old. Stefan needs to either find a new girlfriend or go back with Elena. They have great chemistry so I would hope to see them back together.

Avatar
@ JLO

I hope they will never get together, they don't have any chemistry, are the most boring couple ever, even voted as such, by every writer. I hope Stefan finds someone to love, Elena will allway's love Damon, no matter if they are together or not. and why would I want to see Stefan taking someone back that just told Him I am in love, I am happy and I had the summer of My Dreams and so on

Avatar
@ JLO

I disagree. This episode was the saving grace of the show. It allows a reset - a chance to forget all of gimmicks of the last season and a half. It flowed easily and the acting was great all around. It felt like there must have been a different director...

Avatar

I am so angry that the show broke up Damon and Elena. As a Delena fan, I've been waiting five years for them to get together. And all I get is a handful of episodes before Katherine takes over Elena's body. So now I have to endure Stefan and "Elena" again, because Stefan will almost certainly believe Katherine is Elena. This is so annoying and backwards for the writers. They should've given Damon and Elena at least the entire season to be a couple. I'm so disappointed.

Avatar

I havent watch the episode yet but was it really that BAD????

Avatar
@ TVD fan

No, it wasn't bad. It was HORRIBLE! Don't waste your time watching this crap. If you must know, read the recaps...awful!

Avatar
@ TVD fan

Actually, I thought it was the best episode this season. Depends on your perspective I guess. If you like the flow of seasons 1-2, then I think you will like the episode. It seems like the first step in bringing it all back together now that Silas and the Augustine stuff is in the past.

Avatar
@ Kerry

Seasons 1 and 2 were very good, but they also had the novelty factor appeal as well as the promise of character development. This current season has neither of those two things and with the exception of Bonnie, Matt and Jeremy, who we never really see, all of the characters seem to have regressed. I also really hate the fact that the writers continue to use Tyler as their punching bag.

Avatar
@ TVD fan

No it's really pretty good so good that everyone has there favorite characters and opinions on diffrent situations if your starting it don't stop watching it after the first few episodes it really does pick up and gets better

Avatar
@ Amber+

No, it's a fantastic episode! there were character moments and good story progression, a good episode in a long while!

Avatar
@ kevin

What? I think you were watching something else and got confused. This episode was worse than last week's, and I'm sure it will get progressively worse. These writers need to wake the hell up and kill Katherine for good. No more body-switching...it's freaking BORING and it's killing the show. So many other characters and so many story lines that have gone underdeveloped in favor of this stupidity. Katherine needs to go away NOW!

I don't know if I missed something but can someone please explain what kathrine did to Damon that was so horrible or that has made everything he did while she was dieing justified or what she has done to turn him into the horrible person he is today.
I know that in the beginning kathrine was with both Damon and Stephen ( real slutty thing to do) and that she compelled Stephen once she exposed herself to him not to be frightened and that they will continue to go on as they always had but Damon admitted to Stephen that she never compelled him that he knew everything and she never lied or compelled him and that what they had was100% real and he was completly fine with everything in fact he was so fine with everything that he was going through hell to open the tumb to save his true love so they could be together for ever and blah blah and then come to find out she was never in there she faked her death because a crazy original was trying to kill her and sacrifice her for his own selfish gains to get revenge on her for wanting to live! But for her to do so everyone needed to believe she was dead EVERYONE what a selfish bi**h (not) lol and after all that after Damon found out she lied and was never in the tumb and that he waited for her for so long only to find out she was never in there he was still willing to forgive her and he still loved her and wanted to be with her he wanted to start over and forget everything and move on until she told him she didn't want to be with him and she never loved him and that she has never wanted to be with him it was always Stephen and then he diecieds she ruined his life she was responsible for every horrible thing in his life and she needed to be punished and everything was her fault so there actual in the same situation with Elena right now but it's diffrent because Elena chose him and dumped Stephen not him what's the diffrence am I missing anything I really want to know what she did to Stephen and Damon that is so much worse then what Elena is doing right now I really want to know if there's anything else because I am always reading how much she has done to Stephen and Damon that has ruined them???? And that after everything she did to them deserves to die and much worse and how everything Damon has done to her is justified because of what she has done to them
And I'm not talking about this last episode I'm talking up until then please explain

Avatar
@ Amber+

Katherine hasn't done half of the bad thing Damon has, problem is that Delena fans are just creeps for the actor

Avatar
@ Amber+

She used him when he was human to play against Stefan and then she just let him pine away for her over the next 150 years, thinking she needed to be saved from the tomb when she was actually free. Plus, when she finally did come back in town, she wouldn't just let him be and tried to seduce him only to turn around and say that she never loved him and it would always be Stefan.

Avatar
@ Kerry

The list of what Damon has done are not my impression of the situation they are facts of what he has done .kathrine has faked her death to trick Claus, put rose and Trevor in danger for her own selfish gain, cut johns fingers off, killed Jeremy and so on and so on but as far as Katharine's situation with Damon and Stephen apose to Elena's situation HOW is it diffrent how is Elena's situation any different ?
Used them to play against each other??? I know what everyone's opinion about the situation is but know one can say what she has done you assumed she played them against each other just like Damon assumed she was in the tumb and choose to pine over her for 150 years
I'm sorry but Damon knew everything she didn't lie ,hide or compell Damon at all that is from his mouth not mine . he was so okay with the situation he was hiding In her room and listened to his brothers heart felt confession of love for her and then he was mocking him and just tried to kiss her and jump on top of her they both knew that she was seeing both of them she didn't play them against each they choose to allow her to be with each other
And I am no way making excuses for any of the characters they have all done horrible things and none of them are Innocent and I don't see how everyone can make excuses for some and then want to hang others for doing horrible thing
There horrible things no matter who's doing them that's all
I just wasn't sure if there was something she did that I missed or if people just like Elena better

Avatar
@ Kerry

Plus, they are vampires because of her. She was very selfish with them. She was why their father shot them.

Avatar

Oh god this episode was bad. It could have been better if I wasn't totally over Katherine and this stupid plottwist thats just repeating history. And seriously, didn't anyone wonder, when Katherine didn't go through Bonnie when she died, or why she doesn't see her on the other side? How stupid are they? This was once my all time favorite show, I couldn't wait for thursday, now I'm just annoyed by it..

Avatar
@ justme

Hmmm...I thought this was the best episode this season. I am sure the Bonnie question will be resolved. Maybe she left with Jeremy before Elena went upstairs to talk to Katherine. If she wasn't right there, then she wouldn't expect to see Katherine right away. Katherine would have to find her to pass through.

Avatar
@ Kerry

But in the end of the 11th episode when Katherine died for a moment, Bonnie was there in the Salvatore mansion, and so was everyone else. She saw Katherines ghost and told the others that she was dead but then Katherine woke up. So no one wondered where she went, I mean she died but didn't go through Bonnie and just disappiered, and no one questioned that in this episode...

Kathrine didn't die in the seen where Bonnie saw kathrine and Alaric and vikki Elena was in kathrines head and kathrine was dreaming and then she woke up from her dream and was terrified thinking she died

Avatar

I think that when Elena came to in the motel room and Caroline was calling I think that Elena switched the phone on and then nadi knocked it out of her hand so I think there's gonna be some message somewhere coming soon with kat and nadi talking about Elena being gone forever and The producers also said on a spoiler online that nadi was over heard talking about Elena being gone forever but we will see

Avatar

Awful episode. Katherine should have died ages ago and big surprise! Damon has regressed to the Damon of season 1. Can't the writers come up with something new? And Caroline....I still like her, but sleeping with the person who pretty much enslaved Tyler and destroyed his life was probably the worst thing that she could have possibly have done to Tyler. Talk about kicking someone when they're down. Stefan taking sides and getting all self-righteous was both hypocritical and annoying. I think the only three characters I didn't dislike in this episode were Tyler, Matt and Elena. And where the hell is Bonnie?

Avatar
@ Frances

Going back to the heart of the show was a good move by the writers. The direction they were going in was terrible so it was time to reset.

Avatar

I am wondering why damon was so nice and did not just burn her body instead of putting it in the crypt. Also Elna should have killed the traveler or take the body. she did not have a problem with stabbing nadia. I wonder if it is going to be like on angel when friend was taken over in the last season. It was so sad for wesely but it was good storyline

The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 12 Quotes

You are literally the best person I've ever known. And for me to think I could ever change you was giving me way too much credit and you way not enough… you're the good. And I need a little good in my life.

Damon [to Elena]

Stefan: Define "out."
Damon: One who hovers and sticks his nose in other people's business. Wait... I was defining "annoying."
