Arrow Round Table: "Heir to the Demon"

The Arrow Season 2 Episode 13 Round Table tackles Sara's homecoming, our tiny glimpse into Felicity's past and what impact Oliver's knowledge of Moira's secret might have on the mayoral race.

Join staff writers Kate Brooks, Nick McHatton, Hank Otero, Carla Day and Carissa Pavlica as they toss around their ideas at the table, and join in by sharing your own thoughts in the comments!

When Felicity told Oliver the secret, she shared the briefest summary of her past: Single mother, her father left. Who is Felicity Smoak? Give it your best guess.

Kate: She is fiercely independent, she's self-motivated but she comes from this, assumed to be, broken household. Even though this reveal was brief it has made me love Felicity even more. Through her adversities she's been able to become who she is, which is the brains to the hero of Starling City.

Nick: Felicity Smoak is a woman looking for a place to call her own. I don't know how rough her past is, but she's clearly looking to belong somewhere. Being a partner to Oliver and Diggle, helping them save and clean up the city helps give her that outlet: she's found her place. Before being part of the team, I don't think she would have been able to go toe to toe with Moira like that. Willing to invoke Moira's wrath and cunning words to keep her bond and trust with Oliver.

Hank: Let me start by saying I'm psyched to learn more about Felicity's family. Being raised by a single mom has shaped her into an independent and self-motivated woman, as Kate mentioned. She's loyal but doesn't take any of Oliver's nonsense. Nick's 100% correct, Felicity's grown much more confident since joining team Arrow. Though she's the brains of the operation, she's now much more comfortable away from the tech stuff. I was proud of the way she handled Moira. It's about time someone ignored that woman's petty threats.

Carla: She's someone who was lost and now is found. Team Arrow has given her a purpose in her life that she was missing. She has a new family and mission. We've never seen or even heard about her family or friends before this conversation. I took that to mean she was basically alone in Starling City. I'd love to meet some of her family.

Carissa: Nobody took the bait! I was hoping somebody would jump up and grab the missing father story and run with it. I'm trying to tie Felicity into the Arrowverse through mythology. Commissioner Gordon, Oracle's father, married someone and left her before going on to Barbara Gordon's mother. Yes, I'm going there. Wouldn't that be cool? Sarah Essen even helped raise Barbara Gordon in the comics, so some wild way to twist them all around for Arrow would totally work. Just tossing it out there!

How does Oliver knowing about Thea change things with the mayoral race?

Kate: Like he said, he will keep up appearances for Thea's sake but Thea isn't as naive as she used to be. I think this could ultimately be the thing that crushes Moira and her chances at winning.

Nick: I think Oliver explains it best when he tells Moira he's only going to keep up appearances for her in public. He might support Moira publicly, but it keeps his connection to Blood a little stronger. He probably won't mind that Blood will go on the offensive against Moira, and that keeps Blood's misgivings and alliance with Slade in the shadows. This digresses from the question a bit, but what I like most about Oliver's confrontation with Moira is how much love he has for Thea.

Hank: I understand from a story/character point of view, running for Mayor is an interesting twist. However, I just can't imagine Moira running the city. Sure politics is corrupt and there's no one more shifty on Arrow than momma Queen, but she's another level of liar altogether. I'm with Kate, the tension with Oliver will probably mean the end of her political career.

Carla: I doubt it will change the mayoral race itself. Oliver said he'll publicly support his mother and I believe him. If it's going to be an issue, it will be because someone else finds out and the truth becomes and election issue. This isn't the question, but I was shocked that it was Felicity that uncovered the truth and that she confronted Moira about it. That's not how I would have liked to see it go down. Moira's treatment of Felicity showed a formidable side to Oliver's mother which made her much less sympathetic.

Carissa: I like Nick's take on it. Oliver might not mind his mom being taken to task as much as he would have before knowing her secret, and he might like to see her defend herself to see how well she acts under pressure. So far she hasn't held up so well. Can he really back his mother knowing the type of person she is? Does he want her running Starling City? Other than the fact he can tell her what to do, I'd think not.

Sara is home. What is most intriguing about this to you?

Kate: I love it. Its more than intriguing to me, it's a great way to keep the plot not only moving forward but to also help our main characters grow. A lot of viewers are upset that Oliver and Sara got together last night and I feel quite the contrary. It's a way to help progress the plot and ultimately (hopefully) make the bond between Oliver and Felicity that much stronger.

Nick: How she reintegrates herself with her family. Everything about the night the Gambit went down, and what came to light about her and Oliver absolutely tore apart the Lance family. They will never be able to get back to that corny, but happy, flashback, so it's a matter of how they might be able to pick up the pieces of their shattered family and arrange them in a way that at least resembles what they once had. Additionally, I don't buy for a second that Sara is released from Ra's al Ghul, so her being home is a giant farce. Something is going to happen to her, and it's only going to tear the Lance family apart for a second time.

Hank: It's crazy how packed the Arrow lair is at this point. While I agree that so many different personalities will keep things fresh, it means characters like Diggle are being used less all the time. Nick's right, there's no way Ra's al Ghul will let Sara go that easily. Though I like Carissa's theory that Laurel will go bad and Sara will stick around, all signs point to Sara's demise by season's end. By the way, Sara and Ollie hooking up didn't bother me one bit.

Carla: Sara's going to shake things up for her family, Team Arrow, and in Starling City. Her presence is going to create ripples and that's going to be fun to watch. For me, it's a toss up between her relationship with Oliver and with Laurel for most intriguing. And they will likely be intertwined. Oliver's history with Sara is much deeper than he had with Laurel, which is the opposite of what it originally appeared when the series began. Plus, of course, Sara's presence in the Arrow Lair will not make Felicity happy. Sara's presence is an incredible shake up for the show and I can't wait to see where it goes.

Carissa: I wonder if Ollie and Sara will intertwine and take each other up the salmon ladder... Anyway, I agree on most of what's been said, and realize that we're probably all going to look back and this and laugh. They're going to have to expand the lair a bit, move some boxes at least, and be careful going down there. It's like a three ring circus. How can Thea not notice them coming and going? Watching the Lance family try to get back to normal should be interesting, because I don't see how it can be done. They're so broken. From the top to the bottom. Sara's not really free and danger is coming, so it's only a matter of time before the next body drops. Guessing is futile!

Was Laurel's reaction to Sara's return natural or out of line?

Kate: In a sense, it's natural, whatever. I don't like Laurel right now, she's nothing but a burden to the show at this point. Her reaction didn't seen natural, instead it seemed jealous that her problems don't matter now that Sara is alive. I'm Team Sara, sorry Laurel.

Nick: Completely natural, Laurel mentions last season that she couldn't be angry because Sara was dead. But she was angry at Sara, so she couldn't properly grieve. It's unfortunate that Laurel had to be prepping her speech with a glass in her hand, but it speaks to how much of a crutch Laurel has placed on addiction.

Hank: It certainly was natural for the character, making it all about Laurel. I'll be completely honest, when Laurel talks I tend to tune out.

Carla: Natural for Laurel. Laurel's shown time and time again that she's selfish and that didn't stop here. I'll cut her some slack for her initial reaction, but if she doesn't take a step back and ask what happened to Sara then I will have no respect for her at all. Laurel saw Oliver's scars, if Sara returned over 5 years after the ship sunk then Laurel should show concern about what happened to her sister.

Carissa: I think Sara returning to Oliver will only make things worse, but the initial reaction was spot on. If she had been there when Laurel woke up in the hospital room with her mother and Lance, it would have been different. The poison, the kidnapping... it was too much. She was already angry and to bring imminent danger back that almost lost two lives in one day? I'd be pissed too.

Talk about what you'd like to see next on Arrow Season 2.

Kate: I'd like to see Barry return and we explore his new abilities. I'd really love to see more Olicity (platonic) scenes. I'm way over anticipating this Slade and Oliver reunion in present day. I'd also like to note, the recent trailer (the one with the creeper VoiceOver) was fantastic! It's like a trailer for a movie. The CW is really pulling out all of the stops for them and it's working!!

Nick: Arrow has dropped a line about Felicity's parents, so it's time for at least one of them to make an appearance soon!

Hank: I'd love to see Barry again, but the way The Flash pilot is coming together I doubt we will. Unless Felicity visits her mother in Central City and drops in on Barry in the hospital. He wouldn't be much fun in a coma though, would he? Imagine Wednesday night's this fall, Arrow followed by The Flash! Major Nerdgasm!!!

Carla: I'm looking forward to finding out what happened on the island. Why did Oliver believe both Slade and Sara were dead? We'll have to wait until March to find out, but at least we'll have the "Birds of Prey" showdown before that.

Carissa: I want Slade to provoke something in Oliver. Preferably by his own hands and leaving Blood out of it for now. He needs to man up and do his own dirty work. I'll lose respect for him if he only sends minions to do his evil deeds. I'm also very interested to see Sara, Laurel and Felicity all in a room together. Brunch, perhaps? A welcome home party? Just to see how they all operate. Laurel needs to keep her hand off the bottle for it to be worth it, however, and that likely won't happen. Sigh.

I gotta say, after having watched all the deleted scenes for Season 1 and rewatching the second season, I'm totally Team Laurel in this episode. Look at everything she's been through along with everything she knows/doesn't know. Her boyfriend betrayed her and died. Her SISTER betrayed her and ALSO died. Her mother ditched her father and her and didn't communicate with them for five years. Her father became an alcoholic who she picked up at bars and drove home while he was passed out in her backseat (as the child of an alcoholic, I completely sympathize). She went to law school and started a legal aid office with her best friend and worked on building it for two years. Falls in love with dead boyfriend's best friend. He breaks up with her for no apparent reason, she gets back with Oliver for close to a day, before Tommy (who she's till in love with) dies trying to save her life, because she ended up trapped trying to save her business and all her client's cases and legal lives, whereafter her other love ditched her immediately afterward for close to six months. Also Laurel has been kidnapped and nearly murdered more times than anybody can count. Literally 95% of this happened because Sara got on the boat with Oliver. Not because Oliver died at sea cheating on her, but because it was SARA he was cheating with. Sara's choice to get on the boat is what caused all of that strife. If I were in her position at the end, I wouldn't have thrown a glass at Sara's head, I'd have thrown an axe

@ Shawn

It's not easy to state that opinion. Thanks for sharing! Hope you'll be watching with us in the fall. The Flash too!

Carissa... this may sound harsh but you have driven out a lot of fans of these Arrow related rountables and reviews because of your attitude. I get the fact that you don't like all the Laurel hate but when Olicity/non-Olicity shipper even so much as mention ways the writers could get rid of Laurel, you lash out. I find that not fair at all to be honest. The vast majority of these people aren't saying things like: "Laurel should just drop dead." or "She should kill herself." Even you have to admit, that the weakest link of the show is Laurel. I really am not trying to be mean to you but if you are going to continue writing for tvfanatic, why not be more open minded like the people on the Arrow After Show? Have you watched it? They actually have roundtable of sorts for each episode and a long with describing what they liked about the episode, they talk about the negatives. They even take live viewer questions on the show. Yeah, we do get their opinions, and sometimes its not exactly what we wanted to hear. But at least they are nice and respectful.

@ Queenbee

You're not harsh, nor are you gutsy. You're rude. I reread every answer on this round table and there isn't one derogatory thing said about your ship. Who has the problem respecting the opinions of others? It's not me.

@ Queenbee

u r gutsy

Honestly, I am a bit torn between the Sara and Oliver hook up we saw at the end. On one hand it was nice nod to the comics and Caity and Stephen do have chemistry and I love Sara saying she was home. However, I hate the fact that it seems like they got caught up in the moment and aren't thinking of others. I know their lives shouldn't revolve around Laurel, but with her addiction, her state of mind is fragile and when she finds out it might be what causes her to snap. Furthermore, like the whole Laurel/Oliver last season, Sara/Oliver also face the same problem. There is just way too much baggage. Although, I will say this, at least Sara and Oliver are more alike and bonded through their ordeal on the island.

@smoak and arrow
I almost agree with u. they used sara and olivers hookup for 3 reason: #1 on canon BC and GA dated/married bt that didn’t work out #2 to impact laurel and #3 to explore felicitys abandment issue (guess). I think they won’t make felicity oracle coz its obvious route if any thing the writers gives us suprises good/bad. Cant wait for episode 14..!!! I loved ur thought on clockman vs felicity.
The actress who played sara lacks serious acting skill. I like sara but she cant act…!!! Im one of those ppl who liked laurel on s1, im losing it gradually. Kate deserve better, she should quit arrow

sara played by the actress is terrible, last episode proves that.@ smoak and arrow agree with u.i also think we will get a peak on felicitys backstory next episode.liked ur post on clock king and felicity

I don't care to much about Felicitys backstory but I'm super glad Sara and Oliver hooked up they have hot chemistry and a perfectly matched until the producers bow to the pressure of the Olicity cult and keep forcing that on us

okay I loved the episode until like the last minute, that being said I really o want to know more about Felicity's family. Also I read the description for the next episode and something tells me that if Felicity does find out about Oliver and Sara its gonna be an awkward working environment. I was can't wait for the Slade and Oliver reunion because Slade's revenge will probably equal some death.

I loved this episode. I thought it was terrific and fun and the hour just flew by. Q1 - Who is Felicity Smoak? Man, that's a question I've been wondering since we met her. LOL. Clearly her upbringing is a subject of distress for her and I agree with the feedback: it made you love Felicity even more. Knowing what we now know about her upbringing, that scene with Felicity in Moira really showed that Felicity is one heck of a strong person. It doesn't seem like Felicity was close to her mother either and I got the impression from her lack of ability to even define her to mean her mother is a serious piece of work. I think Felicity managed to carve out a life for herself, a very lonely life because I bet she hasn't let anyone close to her in fear they'd abandon her if she let herself need them, and now through a weird twist of fate she's come a part of something bigger than she ever imagined with Oliver and Team Arrow. I know lots of people jumped on the dad part of her story but I was more curious about her mother. I need to meet both of these people. LOL. I hope they're coming -- either at the same time or one at a time -- to Starling City. I'm also hoping that one, if not both, are more on the villain side. It makes things more interesting, imo, and brings more conflict for Felicity, Oliver/Felicity, and the team if they're opposites. Q2 - I think Oliver learning the paternity secret keeps him torn between fully supporting either Moira or Blood. Torn loyalties and all that, which just ups his conflict on every level. I love that about Arrow. I think Oliver will smile and nod and attend all the events he's supposed to but I he'll hold back on being so gushy vocally supportive. If he hadn't known the truth I think he'd be out stomping hard for Mom. Now it's going to be more like, "I showed up. I did the photo op. What more do you expect?" Q3 - Complications for all! It ups the drama and the conflict and still leaves a cloud of danger over the whole city because you know nothing is ever this easy. Q4 - I can't be objective on this question just because I have no use for Laurel at all. I don't care. Basically I thought, wow, Sara doesn't even get a chance to explain why she's been gone? Nothing? I'm like Hank though. I tend to just tune out when she starts talking. Q5 - There's so much I want to see. I want to see more hints of Felicity's backstory. I'd like to see at least one of her parents, if not both. I want to see Slade actually step up and start showing how he's been manipulating people for this master plan. I want to see Oliver's face when he realizes Slade is not only alive but in Starling and bucking for revenge. I'd like to see some female friendships and definitely see Felicity realize she has a family with Oliver and the Team so that the insecurities that came up can be dealt with. Thea finding out every single person in her life is lying to her is going to be a huge blow out. Her finding out Oliver knew & kept it from her is probably going to blow their relationship apart. Part of me would really like to see Thea and Felicity bond because their family experiences could give them someone they can relate to. Thea could bring out some fun in Felicity and Felicity could help ground Thea and help her mature. Oh and I definitely want to know if Moira is going to hold a grudge and want some kind of revenge on Felicity for costing her her son. I mean... I have a hard time thinking Moira is just going to let that go.

@ Smoak&Arrow

I should point out that I chose Commissioner Gordon because he was Oracle's father, and had a first wife who he left shortly after they were married. They could easily twist the story all around to be that Felicity has no idea who her father is (as she said) and still be sort of true to the verse IF she ends up being Oracle. I like playing with the twisted Arrowverse, since they created a new Canary with Sara!

@ Carissa Pavlica

Darn it, my reply went into moderation again, didn't it. LOL. I totally get why you mentioned the dad thing. The dad mention in Felicity's speech definitely got more attention, I think, then the mom did with viewers as a whole. The Mom caught my attention just because Felicity couldn't even verbalize a definition of her. I love how the Arrow universe gets re-imagined by this show for all the characters. It's what makes it fun. I've been keeping my fingers crossed that at least one of Felicity's parents, if not both, will show as villains simply for the conflict & growth it would bring to Felicity's character, the team, as well as Oliver/Felicity's dynamic. I think there would be lots and lots to play with.

@ Smoak&Arrow

In regards to Sara's longetivity on the show. If she remains part of the supporting cast next season, she will most likely die. If she she gets promoted to main season, her death might be prolonged. I think the moment we see Sara dying on the island will be when she is also dying in the present.

Commissioner Gordon as Felicity's Dad would totally rock! Never thought of that angle but love the way your brain works Carissa!!!

Spindae 2o

Amazing Rt once again, I wa waiting for it the whole weekend. I just loved the whole episode.
1.Who is Felicity? I like your guess Carissa. My guess in her comic connection is that either is she Oracle's daughter or the daughter of Harley Quinn. It was suggested her mother is either overprotective of crazy.
2.Mayoral race? I really don't care about it. I believe election day will be season finale so things will go crazy. I think Oliver will finally get some more intense and honest interaction with Moira which will push things far along. I'm more interested in Thea's development, she desperaetly needs it. I think Slade could drag her along to the dark side to get to Oliver.
3Sara is home! And it seem she will date Oliver for real. I don't know where they want to finish her. I started to dig Caity but I really don't think she will keep singing this song for long. Her inner demons keep biting her in the ass. Will she hunt down women in need and help them?
4:Laurel! I really hope she starts punching Sara cause deserves IT major time, I want forgiver this Oliver hook up . I want to get that sisterly bonding but I want to feel real and well developt. Her reaction was beautifuly executed, hope Katie gets more of thee scene.
5:What I want in S02? A huge Slade-Oliver break down the built up towards it is great. Roy and Thea to get some individual development and I'm certainly ready to meet Felicity's parents.

Arrow Season 2 Episode 13 Quotes

I was with you because I loved you.

You had an affair with Malcolm Merlyn about one year before Thea was born. Merlyn is Thea's father.
