Arrow Review: The Canary Is Free

by at .  Updated at . Comments

They were throwing curve balls at us on Arrow Season 2 Episode 13 - but we were rewarded handsomely for playing duck and cover.

Once again, I'm amazed at how deftly they're able to keep so many balls in the air without dropping them. The stories flowed so well and no questions were left untouched at the end of the hour. That doesn't mean they were all answered, but nothing was forgotten.

Why is Nyssa al Ghul Here?
Nyssa al Ghul comes to town to convince Canary to come back to the League of Assassins? Will she be sussessful?

It wasn't a surprise to me that Sara and Nyssa had a relationship. There were some references made in prior episodes that made me wonder if she wasn't romantically involved with someone, and when I learned Ra's al Ghul's daughter was coming to town, I made an educated guess.

It makes sense that Sara would find love in the situation she was in, and it's also easy to understand why someone in her position might choose a woman over a man given the circumstances.

Nyssa is a beautiful woman on the outside, and she seems genuine on the inside, as well. I don't, however, think her father will be as willing to let Sara go as she was. He might be more interested in Sara's death to make them both pay for the error of their ways.

Laurel was poisoned in Arrow Season 2 Episode 12 which is why she couldn't find her way to the couch. Kudos to TV Fanatic reader BAdams44 who spotted the poisoning, but incorrectly suspected Laurel's death as a result. We're all batting zero in guessing where her arc is going.

Sara was willing to give up her life by taking the same poison to get out of the League of Assassins and dammit, for a second there I thought we had lost her. I really imagined they were going for it with Laurel as Canary. It would have made sense IF Laurel hadn't had a chance to see her before she died. She could have been willing to avenge her sister's death in that instance.

Interestingly, Laurel was very excited when she thought she saw Sara while hallucinating, but was of a much different mindset when she learned she was really alive. Dreams and reality don't always have the same shine, especially after reality just had your mother kidnapped, you poisoned, caused your parents' divorce and didn't call for years. It's easier to think kindly of the dead.

Sara isn't dead, however. She's very much alive and Laurel is very pissed off. The things Laurel said to Sara made sense to me. She didn't need to ask questions because the answers would all be the same -- because it's Sara. The laundry list of things that went wrong was probably just the tip of the iceberg. Imagine how happy Laurel would be to know that she sent Sara back into the shirtless arms of Oliver Queen. Yikes.

All of that Sara stuff and it wasn't even the only big story of the evening. It turns out all of our Arrow Round Table chatter about the Moira/Sebastian Blood mayoral race was wrong because of the wild card -- Felicity Smoak. She said just a few words about her family, but I really need to know who she is. That girl has balls. Taking on Moira Queen like that? Damn girl.

I was proud of Felicity for giving Moira a chance to tell Oliver what she knew she couldn't keep from him. She should have just said it -- 'talk down to me all you want, Moira, but unlike you, I cannot lie to your son. So either you tell him the truth or I will. Period.' But where's the drama in that?

Oliver said he will be Moira's son in public, but will he go all out for her as a candidate as he would have if he still respected her? Maybe some of the sting will be taken out of the race, although Slade didn't look happy. He's going after Moira in some way. The question is whether or not Oliver really cares anymore. Another question is how long until Thea finds out the truth.

With both Sara and Laurel home, where is Laurel's story? I know you don't care and you just want her to die, but I see absolutely no fun in that at all. It's also too predictable. Arrow is not predictable. Slade is still out to hurt Oliver, so there's still the possibility of Laurel going dark. She is certainly angry enough to turn her back on her entire family and all of her friend. Friends isn't plural because I think Oliver is the only one she has left.

Sara could be sticking around so we get close to her and really fall in love before they kill her. While that might seem predictable because Laurel is comically destined to become Canary, it's not because viewers love Caity Lotz and to rip her away from the audience will anger many. It's still a possibility.

Sara could be out there running free and get into an accident and become Oracle while Laurel takes over Canary, but Felicity is so perfect for Oracle it doesn't make sense. Is anybody else dreading the thought of seeing more Huntress? With Birds of Prey and Canary comes Huntress. Hmpf.

For now, Sara's here, makin' love with Oliver which means making enemies of Laurel and Felicity. Hardly a girl band in the making.

Don't forget, you can if you've missed one moment of any of all the goodness this show has to offer, you can watch Arrow online right here on TV Fanatic.

Are you happy Sara's home?

WOW, what and episode ! LOVED it. the fight scenes !!!!!!!!! AWESOME ! I really thought Sara was going to die... And Laurel, to avenge her, was going to become the BC. Yeah right ! NEXT !
Felicity had no business confronting Moira. However, telling Oliver (since she went too far already) seemed like the only way to go. But she definitely needs to move on. Don't get me wrong, I do ship Olicity, but enough is enough.
What is Slade going to do !!!! Now that is keeping it interesting.
Laurel telling Sara off made sense, but lost its credibility with the alcohol.
Now Ollie and Sara sleeping together, I get why, but it was quite cheap.... Oh well.

Finally I watched the episode. I have mixed feelings about it though. 1, It is obvious that Nyssa went to Starling City to take Sarah with her, that is the only reason she was in town and nothing more as she loves her, she did not care who she hurt and she knew that touching Sarah family was the best way for her to convince Sarah to go with her as long as Sara opted to be with her and the League of Assassins so they can be together again pure and simple. 2. Felicity should have not say anything to Moira about Thea, I mean Felicity had no business in butting in Oliver family, that was not her call, cause she was just an employee at Queen consolidated, she did not have that much power in the company to give her the right to threatened a very important person who is Moira. If she found out about Thea she should have kept the secret to herself and to Oliver, eventually that secret was going to be out but by other means perhaps not by Felicity as now her personal life is at stake. Now perhaps Moira will do something against Felicity for telling the truth to Oliver as now Oliver hates her. 3. Felicity for sure once and for all should have said to Ollie she had feelings for him but I guess if she said it so her friendship with Oliver will be tarnish and working together maybe awkward for the 2 of them and not efficient.. Felicity is a nice person and she sacrifices her own self for the sake of others. I guess it is time to think about herself and not worry about Ollie anymore as a man, as a coworker and partner, is another story, he is not worth it he is a philanderer, sleeps around. I doubt Felicitiy likes that kind of man in her life. Laurel reaction was justified at that moment but it made it worse due to she was drinking 5. Sarah and Oliie? No no and no. But given the circumstances why they slept together I understand. They just blew some off steam together. Oliver came from finding out her mom lie to him about Thea and Sara came from knowing that her sister hates her even more and she does not want to see her, they both were crushed by people they love and care, their own family so they both were vulnerable, hurt and angry at that right moment. I just hope is temporarily

Totally agree with what you said at nº2. Felicity was being nosy and inconvinient. As for Sarah and Oliver, I have nothing against it....I hope they stick together....

I agree, it wasn't Felicity's place to say anything about Thea's real biological father. The worst part, in my opinion, was that Felicity was only concerned about Oliver and didn't even think about how this revelation would hurt Thea.

Great review - I think I agree with it all. Just a few minor points: 1. Again, I want to say how great an actor Stephen Amell has become. He's SO underrated. Between the scene where he talks to Felicity and learns the truth, and the confrontation with Moira...the changes of his facial expressions and the movements in his voice - Amell just keeps knocking it out of the park these days. 2. They need to pick a pronunciation of Ra's al Ghul and stick with it. Either one, I don't even care which. Different characters pronouncing it differently is going to drive me nuts LOL. 3. I like the character Sara, but this wasn't Caity Lotz's best episode. She doesn't "die" well. 4. As for Laurel...her reaction was absolutely justified. However, it didn't help her case that she did it with a drink in hand. I fear they're making viewers dislike her so much that we won't care about her redemption or villainy or whatever road they take her on after this. 5. We need more Diggle. I miss the guy. 6. If people think that Ra's al Ghul is ACTUALLY going to let Sara slide...um, no.

It's crazy how all of the fans have turned on Laurel. It is hard to like her. She was annoying in season 1 and now is worse this season. I really hope that she hits bottom soon and begins some sort of redemption. I cannot wait for the next episode and so on! This show is great. Bring on the Lance drama, Queen drama and Slade action! Also, I may be the only one, but I'm not on board with Oliver and Felicity. I just don't see it and she gets annoying sometimes. I guess all the women on this shome have to be annoying at some point.

I'm not a fan of Olicity either....I don't see any future in their relationship......

I liked this episode, personally i just look at the Oliver and Sara getting together as two people hurt and angry, needing to let off steam, and knowing that they can trust each other. It may mean something it may mean nothing more then what it was the physical act.
As to laurel i am going to agree with many people and just say her character just bothers the hell out of me, there are so little redeeming features to her and the blast she had at Sara was just blah..
I think the expansion of the group i don't think is going to be for long as i do think something will happen with Sara, which is a shame as i would prefer her to be Black Canary.
Felicity as always was very good, a real rock making the hard decisions and it will be interesting to see how the situation develops with Sara sticking around. Ofcourse thats assuming Sara wants to have a romantic relationship with Oliver, rather then just work on rebuilding her life.
Really can't wait for the next episode and the craziness that looks ot be going to happen!

I actually think Oliver hooking up with Sara again made zero sense. It made two very powerful and respected characters seem weak and unsympathetic. I am a major anti Laurel person so it wasn't out of any concern for her that I state this. It just made Oliver appear insincere and untrustworthy, and Sara non caring and thoughtless, These two couldn't have picked a better way to hurt Laurel if they tried. As far as Felicity she does deserve better. I think it is time for her to get an actual boyfriend, not Barry. I am afraid the Flash came off too young and immature for her. No I want some real competition maybe even another super hero with more mileage. I guess the Cape Crusader is a no go. But he would be oh so perfect another gorgeous, hot, fit billionaire to notice Oliver's beautiful brilliant IT/PA Also I wouldn't mind her hooking up with someone like Laurel's old boss. The DA's not too hard on the eyes too, or bring in another eligible gent for our favorite Arrow team member. After Oliver and Sara made that disastrous mistake to have sex Felicity needs to back away and not give Oliver any more personal support. Forget friendship time for now and make it nothing but business. I like the way she treated him after Isabel. She needs to tell him Frankly my dear I don't give a damn and move on. He is not worth it and I hate to see her pine away for him anymore. I am a super addicted Olicity shipper but right now I want my Felicity to say hell no and take a break from her crush. I think Dig would totally agree with me on this one. Even though I know Oliver and Sara sex was mostly blow off steam glad to be alive and lonely I need it desperately now. It still seemed terribly wrong to me and I wish the writers hadn't gone that route. To me it just cheapened our heroes, both BC & Arrow. Also if the writers decide to kill off Sara so Laurel can become the Black Canary this is one viewer who may have to give up her Arrow obsession. I would still watch it for the Olicity & the team Arrow moments. But the last thing I want is more screen time with Laurel. She is the least interesting and most boring and totally unlikable character on the show. She almost makes Moira seem like a good guy. Her self pity is so pathetic that I just want to have somebody kill her off already. If CW could find another outlet for Katie I think they would be making a smart decision. Laurel is not now or ever going to be enjoyable to watch and I for one am tried of suffering through her scenes. They are lifeless, uninspiring, dull and down right horribly presented.

OMG that made me laugh sooo hard !!!! But you are totally right : Felicity needs to find someone else. Come on, the guy can tell she has a crush on him but actually mocks her AND doesn't even return those feelings !
It is really interesting to see how many people despise Laurel's character, me included ! To the point where we actually don't care what happens to her ! That's bad. And the writers keep trying to force her on us. WRONG WRONG WRONG !

I have to admit, when Sarah & Ollie got together at the end, I was like YES! Green Arrow & Black Canary. Last night's episode was so good. I hope Nhyssa comes back. I don't think Ras will just let Sara go that easy. I wasn't surprised by Laurel's reaction. They seem to doing everything they can to make her hateable. It would be easy to kill Sara and have Laurel be Black Canary, but I prefer Sara as the Black Canary now. I liked the Canary scream they had in the episode. Arrow is on fire this season.

I'm with you! Those two characters are the only one's that truly understand what the other went through. Like a pressure cooker, giving in to one another allowed them much needed release. Agree about Sara, I prefer her to Laurel as Canary. Can't imagine ever accepting Laurel in the role. The sonic scream is pretty bad ass isn't it?

Sarah silva

Personally not a fan of Sara's.
I was happy when Roy became a member of the team, but now Sara will be too, it is way to crowded in the Arrow cave.
I do not want her with Oliver. I also do not understand how she could go from kissing Nyssa to kissing Oliver, I do not think she has a clue who she is or what she wants.
I hope that Felicity telling Oliver about Malcolm being Thea's father will not strain their relationship, I was no expecting Oliver to be that mad at his mom, I totally understand why he is and he has every right to be. For some reason I thought he would hear his mothers side of he story.
Sara was released from the league and now Laurel will take over. That is why Katie Cassidy looks so gaunt, she has been training for what eventually will be her as the Black Canary.

I seriously screamed at my TV when Oliver and Sara started kissing! I wish she had died because I don't like her character at all. She seems like a spoiled youngest child who just thinks about herself...and 6 years away from civilization doesn't seem to have taught her anything, except how to fight lol. No Oliver. Just NO!
