The Mentalist Season Finale Scoop: Who Will Propose?

by at . Comments

When CBS announced 18 renewals earlier this year, The Mentalist was not on the list.

So when this drama wraps up its sixth season next month, it may be wrapping up for good.

Has creator Bruno Heller penned an episode worthy of a series finale? Or will fans be left hanging off a cliff... forever?

Pike and Lisbon

"It's a romantic finale," Heller teases to TV Guide of what's in store, dropping the following bomb:

Pike will propose to Lisbon!!!

Heller would not reveal how Jane reacts to this development, but does promise closure for fans of the long-running hit.

"With the death of Red John, there's a sense of tying [things] up and certainly this romantic angle is one of them," he says.

Do you want to see The Mentalist Season 6 conclude with Lisbon engaged to Pike? Sound off now!

someone was tipping the bad guy off about every move the good guys were doing so who was it ??? never exposed the mole pike shows up and i'm wondering if it is him don't like him like lisbon and jane together long story short

Bruno Heller is delaying the finale 'scoop' as this is what he wants to happen. He wants the fans to be left wondering about what will happen and whether Jane and Lisbon will in fact become Jisbon. I am a huge fan of the mentalist and to me I don't think that it should end at season 6. This would leave me disappointed as it wouldn't be a satisfying ending. If Jane and Lisbon did get together in episode 22 it would not be enough time to properly end the series. They need time, so if Bruno does let Jisbon happen in the last episode the show needs a season 7. He will want fans to be happy not annoyed at a rushed relationship and ending. Throughout the series Heller has left fans on cliff hangers, personally I think that he is just delaying to gain interest and leave watchers worrying until the last minute

So let's see why does Pike want Lisbon to move to D C with him? Hmmm??? It is portrayed that he lives in Austin right now just like Lisbon and Jane. My guess is he knows she loves Jane. He knows how tight of a relationship they have. He knows for their relationship to work he needs to get her away from Jane. Far away.
I think perhaps they have taped a couple endings and will air the one they find best if they know before it airs whether CBS has been smart and renewed it. I certainly want Jane and Lisbon to end up together. This show may not have stressed the romantic angle with Jane and Lisbon but there was enough evidence there of a deep love for each other. Now that they are out of their boss/employee relationship and done chasing Red John the dynamic of their relationship has changed and opened the door for romance. They missed each other during the two years he was out of the country. So they already know they want to be together. I want to see them profess their love for each other and start dating. Jane needs to prove his love for her and that she can trust him.
I want them together but most of all I want Jane and Lisbon happy. Hopefully one of the last scenes will have them smiling at each other. I want to see his handsome smile and her beautiful smile. I certainly don't want the season to end with Jane or Lisbon sad.
And PLEASE CBS RENEW THE MENTALIST!!!!!! The fans want it and deserve it after all you have done in changing the time of the show to seemingly try to kill it. I don't believe there is any new show out there worthy of taking it's spot.

WTF IS the show really gonna be cancelled!!!!!! Please can anyone cofirm this?

@ Senmi

Its not known yet if CBS will renew to a series 7, they are stalling on announcing either way, but they seem to have little space left on their schedule and the Mentalist makes them less money (its made by Warners) than shows they make themselves. However TM won an award recently for being the most watched TV show in the whole world. This motivates Warners to pursue getting it renewed or to try and get it shown on a channel in the USA which is not CBS. The date for clarifying all this is not known by the public yet. You will find plenty of references on TM fan sites about the renewal process etc as it progresses, including on this site. Hope that helps and that I have summarised it ok.

Here's my take: It's obvious they love each other. Jane told Lisbon he loved her, and she asked what he meant when he said it because she loves him too. They are unsure how the other one feels, and they're both cowards. Now that Lisbon's got a boyfriend, Jane tells her she looks beautiful, calls her Teresa instead of Lisbon, and most importantly, doesn't tease her, which was always his M.O. Instead, he looks hurt and Lisbon looks unhappy. Heller said this half of season 6 is supposed to be lighter and more fun. Marrying Lisbon off to Pike is the equivalent of killing her off. Leaving Jane lonely and brokenhearted is neither light nor fun. This is a reboot; they ended the Red John saga, eliminated two major characters, introduced new ones, and moved them to Texas in order to steer the show in a different direction. A Jane/Lisbon romance seems destined. Long story short (too late,) Lisbon will accept Pike's proposal because Jane will pretend he's fine with it -- leaving Lisbon hurt, angry and with no choice but to try to move on with someone else, even though that someone else is not her first choice. Jane will interrupt the wedding and profess his true feelings for Lisbon. Later, when Jane feels he's failed to win her, Lisbon will show up, leaving Pike to be with him. If there is a season 7, that relationship, fraught with difficulty because Jane is a handful, will be explored. If there is no season 7, the series will end with Jane moving on to a new life with Lisbon. If Jisbon fans don't get some kind of indication that this is where the series is headed, tthere will be no season 7 because the finale ratings will suck ass. According to some internet polls, over 90% of Mentalist fans want a Jane/Lisbon pairing. If Heller doesn't deliver on that, it would be a big F### You to all the fans who've stuck by the show to see it come to fruition. I'd be very surprised if Heller didn't deliver on this... I'd also throw myself down a flight of stairs.

I would like to see Jane and Lisbon get together, HOWEVER I don't think it's going to happen. I think it's going to end with Lisbon accepting Pike's proposal.

Why do most fans think closure requires a Jane/Lisbon romance? As a loyal fan, I would not be hurt in the least if Lisbon married Pike. In fact, I would be ecstatic! She deserves a stable, mature man who loves and respects her, who does not take her for granted. This does NOT describe Jane. I would be very impressed with Bruno Heller if he did take that route. I’m tired of the same old cliché endings. The Mentalist never presented as a romance series. A developing romance between Jane and Lisbon was NEVER a real plotline. It’s not like Castle, where from the pilot there were constant verbal puns, double entendre, leering looks, etc., to indicate the direction the story was going. That is not the case with The Mentalist. Yes, Lisbon and Jane love each other, but there has never been any real evidence that they are IN love with one another. Jane does not have to end up remarried or rolling around in the hay with Lisbon or anyone else for the show to have closure. He simply needs to learn to forgive himself and move on with life. “Moving on” does not assume a romantic relationship. A healthy person should never depend on another to assure their self-worth. One of the aspects I always appreciated about The Mentalist is that it wasn’t preoccupied with the sex lives of its main characters. Yes, we were given Lisbon’s one night stand with Mashburn; Jane and Lorelei’s brief encounter; and one scene with Rigsby and Van Pelt; but that is three scenes in almost six years and nothing explicit. Rather a breath of fresh air in the over-sexualized wasteland of modern television. Jane and Lisbon love each. Everyone knows that. Their relationship runs deeper than many married couples I have encountered. I assume what all the shippers want is to see Jane and Lisbon swapping spit, groping each other and rolling around in the sheets. It seems that to the world today, that’s what constitutes a loving relationship. However, any prostitute will quickly disavow you of that notion. Love is love and sex is sex; the two are mutually exclusive. Jane and Lisbon will always be close because they are best friends. But best friends do not often make good lovers. Their relationship is actually deeper and purer than any romantic relationship could be, and to try and create a romance would, in many ways, destroy the intimacy they already have.

" I assume what all the shippers want is to see Jane and Lisbon swapping spit, groping each other and rolling around in the sheets." Nope not me. Thats not a romantic ending, Thats more like a porn video. I would like to see Jane come out of this less alone though and I would like the emotional investment Jane and Lisbon have made to each other continue on a deep level. I think some of us have a more romantic view of love than you do maybe? I agree that the show has played it well with low key and not obsessive references to the characters love lives. "Love is love and sex is sex; the two are mutually exclusive." Its a great shame if that is your experience. I assure you, it is not like that for everyone in real life - for some yes, but plenty of other people have a very different & positive experience of combining emotional love and physical sex. Sometimes you know, in a show, people want to see the best and romantic side of life. Plenty of us do not want to see shows that make us feel bad, sad or unhappy as there is enough of that in life if we ask around. People seek escapism, to hope there is a nicer world and nicer people especially if they are having a rough time themselves in real life. They want the hope and the dream to help them through the bad times.

My "experience" in these departments has been and continues to be quite wonderful and fulfilling. I am happily married to the most caring, respectful and nurturing man on the planet. When I say love and sex are mutually exclusive, I mean one does not require the other for existence, not that they never coincide. There are people who routinely engage in sex where emotional feelings, especially love, never enter the picture. There are people who live in a romantic, loving, committed relationship who cannot, or simply do not, engage in that intimate a physical relationship. Love is what matters. Sex only has meaning when it involves true love. To engage in sex simply for the physical pleasure without a deeper commitment makes one no better than a wild rutting animal. I am sorry if that offends, but I hold humans to higher standard than the lower beasts of the earth. Sex does not a meaningful relationship make. Love makes sex meaningful. Jane and Lisbon already have a deep loving relationship. But a deep loving relationship does not have to involve a romantic/sexual relationship to be fulfilling and meaningful. It appears, however, that many fans assume the only possible endings for these two characters is that they either get married or both end up miserable for the rest of their life. They can remain close friends and colleagues and yet still find romantic love with other people. Cops, military and some other professions have similar relationship all the time. I’ve known male and female cop partners who have had deep, trusting NON-sexual relationships and still maintain deep, loving and faithful relationships with their spouses.

I do not want to see Jane and Lisbon together at this point because, regardless of whether they are IN love or not, Jane is in NO WAY realistically ready for an intimate relationship with anyone. Especially not with Lisbon, given his child-like dependence on her. Let’s face it; Jane still does not even mention his former family. He has no references or reminders of them anywhere that we’ve seen, except for that ring that he is still wearing twelve years since their death and over two years since achieving his vengeance. He does not seem to have achieved any real closure despite everything that has occurred. Lisbon cannot fix Jane. Only he can do that. She can support him, encourage him, but until he finally deals with the death of his family, any closer relationship with Lisbon would have her as nothing but an emotional crutch and stand-in replacement for Angela. The problem is jumping from their relationship as it has been portrayed for the past six years into suddenly “I love you!”, kissy-face, tiptoeing through the tulips, without any deeper character development and observed change in Jane’s emotional state would seem terribly forced. The writers have certainly had time in the past nine episodes since Red John’s demise to show this emotional maturing of Jane, but instead all we’ve gotten is the same old Jane and suddenly Lisbon has a boyfriend. So what? Suddenly a light bulb goes off and he grabs her, plants a big one on her, and they go riding off into the sunset at the end of this season/series? Talk about cheesy and “soap operish”. That would be as big an epic fail as the Red John finale/debacle. And it would be an insulting and extremely UNoriginal ending to such a creative and original series, if this does indeed turn out to be its final season. I am just saddened because I have so thoroughly enjoyed this show since season one, only to feel rushed and unsatisfied this season. It feels like they have a list and are just marking things off as they go along. Find and kill Red John. Check. Wayne and Grace get married and have family. Check. Jane and Lisbon fall in love and live happily ever after. Check. Cho…well, still just stoic Cho. It just gives the impression that the writers have just given up, and I hate that! If they were aiming for a seventh season, then they shouldn’t have rushed the two-year exile into one episode. They could have taken at least a few episodes to show Jane and Lisbon’s emotional development over that time they were apart. Then the gradual evolution of their relationship once they were reunited would feel more natural. The renewal issue cannot be blamed entirely. The show has been on the cancellation bubble for the past couple of seasons. They should have taken the bull by the horns and already started shopping the show around to other networks to have their back-up plan in place should they get the axe from CBS, or have planned this season to be the last from day one and written the episodes in a much better way to create a more realistic and satisfying ending this May. I want to see a happy ending for all the characters as well, but only if it makes sense and doesn’t feel cobbled together at the final hour. I appreciate good escapism, but only if it’s logical. Otherwise, I want to see the series end with Jane flying off on that pet dragon he wanted.

Why do most fans think closure requires a Jane/Lisbon romance? Because they do love each other and the best foundation for a good marriage is a deep and strong friendship, which they have. Yes Pike is stable and such but for some women that can be boring. I mean after Jane anyone is boring. Jane can give her what she needs. Now that they are no longer boss and employee and chasing Red John he can give her the relationship she deserves. I have also appreciated that the show hasn't spent time showing characters roll around in the hay so to speak and I don't want to see Jane and Lisbon roll around either. I do want to see them profess their romantic love for each other and for them to start dating. This way Jane can prove to Lisbon that he loves her and will never take her for granted again. There is absolutely no need for them to jump into bed together. He needs to court her. She deserves it and he needs that time to prove his love for her to her. And please how can you say love is love and sex is sex. Great marriages have both because they should.

I agree that this program was never presented as a romance series, and I don't believe that Jane and Lisbon belong together romantically. An accepted proposal from Pike would seem a trifle hasty, though. Teresa is more sensible than to jump into marriage with a virtual stranger just because the show did not get renewed.

Avatar
@ Sue Ann

Oh, I agree it seems hasty to me too. However, we don't know exactly how much time has passed. It could have been months since they met. We don't know that it was their first date Jane was referring to in the last episode. They may have dated a few times by now, and it may have been many months by the time Pike proposes. We all know how very flexible time is in The Mentalist world.

I really like your comments - they're so well worded and clear. I think the reason that some fans are pushing for a romance and other fans aren't is because Heller and company are encouraging just that. They're deliberately creating ambiguity in Jane and Lisbon's relationship, and have been for a little while. The show certainly started with them being strictly platonic (and I agree, that was great and wonderfully refreshing), but I think they've deliberately made things ambiguous lately to give themselves the opening to go either way if they please. The fans that are rooting for a romance aren't making something out of nothing - there's enough to make one wonder. I don't think it's fair to assume that the fans who want romance for the two of them just want to see them lay each other (I certainly don't). I think that given how much Jane and Lisbon love each other as friends, people just want to see them make each other happy. Is that possible? Remains to be seen. Likewise, the fans who are on the opposite end of the spectrum are also correct. They don't need to be romantic simply because they love each other as friends. And you're all right - Jane doesn't even quite know who he is, much less for knowing how to love Lisbon the way she deserves. I think there's room in the fandom for both theories. The ambiguity is what I'm liking most about this season, and I'm willing to go with wherever the writing takes us.

There is absolutely NO WAY that I want Pike and Lisbon engaged!!!! Watching the episodes since Pike appeared has been hard. Lately, however I feel as though Lisbon is grasping at Pike's feelings for her to provoke Jane into action. I hope that is it and that it ultimately works. The possibility of losing my favorite show is trauma enough, I can't see Bruno Heller trying to hurt the fans any more than they already are. The shows have been excellent right from the beginning so why would he want to end such a masterpiece show by dropping another character into the story to ruin the ending for those who have loved his work? I want this season's dvd so badly and I truly hope that the end of the season (or God forbid, the show) will give me and other fans the closure we need and deserve. Six wonderful years should not be thrown in the garbage (I would never want to watch past episodes again if I knew it ended badly) and I think Mr. Heller knows that. There seems to be a special closeness between the actors, directors, producers, crew, writers, etc. and I don't think anyone would sit back quietly as the show's integrity was compromised. Based on these feelings I am very hopeful for a wonderful ending to the season AND an opening for the series to be continued into next season should the chance come along. I pray I am right.
