Black Sails Season 2 Episode 1 Review: IX

Was the opening sequence of Black Sails Season 2 Episode 1 nerve-racking or what? It was a fantastic way to kick off the second season, when fans are expecting to rejoin Flint and crew on that beach right where the series left off.

The intro left no doubt that Captain Ned Low is ruthless and totally psychotic. He's going to cause tons of trouble before this season's over I can guarantee that.

Watching Flint and Silver team up was a blast too. The season is off to a great start, and I can't wait to see what happens over the next few weeks!

The poor crew of the hijacked ship was so misinformed, they had no idea they were indeed dealing with a monster. Talk about “too much information,” the man on the captured ship made Nassau sound so appealing, hell I’d join the plundering. What an idiot, it not only cost him his life, but the lives of the entire crew. Brutal the way Captain Low slaughtered all those men in cold blood. That girl must be some prize alright.

I’m curious to see how Captain Low, Flint and Vane deal with one another. I mean, Flint has proven himself to be a badass, but this guy's insane.

I'd just like to mention my musical hero, Bear McCreary, real quick. Though a year has gone by, listening to Bear’s brilliant opening credit sequence put me right back in the world of the pirates. I always feel the same way when The Walking Dead or Da Vinci’s Demons return from hiatus. The man is a genius, and his music sets the tone for every single project he's involved in.

Okay, so when we do catch up with Captain Flint and his angry crew on the island, he’s trying to come up with a plan to get that gold. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy with all those Spanish soldiers guarding it, but I didn’t expect Flint to attack the ship instead.

There's no way of approaching that beach from the land. And even if it weren't for the soldiers, and even if it weren't for the guns; there's a f**king warship watching over every inch of the bay. A f**king warship that's already killed half your number. A f**king warship that will prevent any approach to that beach via the sea. There's simply no way of stealing that gold. But there might be something else you can steal. The f**king warship.

Flint

As crazy as the plan sounded, it made total sense and Flint is a master at selling the Kool Aid. It was ballsy of the Captain to volunteer as one of two men to board first. That’s the thing about Flint, he’s never afraid to get his hands dirty. He may pull some crazy ass stunts, but he leads by example. Now, he certainly didn’t expect Silver to volunteer for the number two spot. That was just plain funny.

It seems like forever since Season 1, so I can’t recall if we met Lord Tomas Hamilton before, but the flashbacks here were important. We certainly heard his name often last year, now we’ll get to see how all the events went down. I’m looking forward to that. After all, it’s the backstory of how Flint became a pirate right? It was fun to witness Flint’s first encounter with Miranda Barlow as well.

I love the way Eleanor talks to Vane, she’s not afraid to put him in his place. Of course, the pirate still has feelings for her, so I think he allows it. Last season, Vane captured the fort and now he’s sitting pretty there and has become a much more important player.

Vane’s got a point when he asks why Eleanor sees such a partner in Flint and a villain in him. It will be interesting to see who has her back this season. With Captain Low inevitably causing trouble, I think Flint and Vane just might work together.

Wasn’t it amusing when Silver realized Flint’s plan wasn’t some scheme at all?

Silver: Hang on, you're serious about taking the ship?
Flint: What the f**ck did you think?
Silver: I thought this was how you intended to escape.

The scene with Flint and Silver walking among the sleeping Spanish soldiers aboard the ship was tense. I had a bad feeling Silver was going to blow their cover. Of course, he wakes a guy up while attempting to steal from him and Flint’s forced to slide his blade into the man’s throat. Brutal wasn’t it? Silver's right, he’s the only person that’s had the Captain’s best interest at heart. He even saved the guy’s life. Is this the start of beautiful bromance? Flint’s going to feel differently about Silver after this adventure that’s for sure.

Rackham’s a jerk, no question about that, but I felt terrible for him. I mean, getting your ass kicked and being pissed on by a bunch of pirates can’t be fun. He’s definitely at his lowest, yet I can’t help feeling a major change is coming for Jack. Only who will he betray to make that happen?

Anne Bonny’s never been a favorite, however, she’s loyal to Rackham so there’s that. The kiss with Max was pretty hot too, I must admit. Speaking of Max, I was surprised she sold information to Captain Low. Does she really hate Eleanor that much?

Back on the Spanish ship Flint and Silver made their move, only things didn’t go according to plan. I was shocked when it seemed Silver sold Flint out to save his own skin. Definitely wasn’t expecting that at all. Everything he said was true too, hilarious! That “sorry” he gives Flint was priceless. Good thing it was all part of Silver’s plan and that the rest of the crew appeared shortly after. The ship was their’s and the black flag flew!

I don't believe you did any of this for a pardon; or a passage to Nassau; or to be able to walk away from anything. I think you intend to reclaim your captaincy. I think you intend to take control of this ship. And then I think you intend to return to that beach, armed to the teeth, and seize every last ounce of gold off of it. And I think you're going to need my help to do it.

Silver

Eleanor and Captain Low finally came face to face and you could tell it’s not going to be smooth sailing for those two. Captain Low is intimidating to say the least, and Eleanor seemed afraid though she put up a good front. Yeah this pirate’s different from the others, no doubt about that. He's going to be the guy to beat this season. Question is, how many of our favorite characters will he take with him?

Overall, this was a very strong episode to start the second season. Some wonderful performances all around and the writing was as wonderful as ever. What did you think of the Black Sails Season 2 Premiere? Is Captain Low going to be trouble or what? Will Flint reclaim his captaincy? Will Vane play nice?

You’re turn, go ahead and hit the comments and share your thoughts on the premiere. See you right back here next Saturday.
