Lost Girl Season 5 Episode 7 Review: Here Comes the Night

at .

The end is near, Faeniacs. But before the midseason finale, we have a cataclysmic turn of events that brings emotions front and center.

After a devastating storm leaves our favorite Fae in the dark, suppressed feelings find a way of coming into the light. Those oracles weren't lying!

From Bo and Lauren's rekindled romance and Dyson's "wolves mate for life" love, to Tamsin's school girl crush and a new, unlikely lurve interest for Vex, on Lost Girl Season 5 Episode 7, Eros is the word (in more ways than one).

After the Storm - Lost Girl

Blackouts always make for interesting television, and this one is no exception. What is it about darkness that makes emotions come to the surface a little easier? In the case of Lost Girl, it had at least something to do with three eyeless oracles appearing to Vex, Trick, Dyson and eventually Bo as the person(s) their hearts most desire.

While Bo appearing to Dyson was hardly a surprise, her apparition speaking of how they can't be together right now was an interesting turn. Since it is a fantasy image, it seems odd that his hallucination would voice hesitation. Similarly, when Dyson's image appears to Bo, it reflects on the changing nature of love.

Bo: Please tell me this thing is about to unleash a lifetime supply of fro-yo.
Lauren: Try one of the oldest and most dangerous Fae to ever walk the Earth.

It seems like they are setting up an ending to the series that will pair Lauren and Bo in the short term, but leave an opening for Bo and Dyson in the long term. It's something I recall from Lost Girl Season 3 Episode 7, when Trick learns Dyson got his love back from the Norn. Basically, to paraphrase, Trick's advice to Dyson was to wait it out. Lauren's human, and even if they spend the next 60 years together, Bo and Dyson will both still be smokeshows when Lauren's human lifespan runs its course.

It's an ending that would be a bit of a cop out. It's decision by indecision, and I hope they go a different way with the series finale. I am a big Dyson fan and have been since Lost Girl Season 1, but I would rather them fully commit to the Doccubus endgame then appease both fan bases with a Lauren now, Dyson later scenario.

"Here Comes the Night" brings Bo and Lauren back to the forefront with their clinic hookup. It was the only romantic moment that was not an apparition, which is telling.

Mesmer me shocked, you have a crush on Teen Wolf.

Vex

However, even though the other hookups were the work of the oracles, they were fun glimpses into the psyches of the characters. While Dyson's vision was no surprise, and Bo's split scene was also predictable, Vex's fantasy was an entertaining and unexpected opportunity to learn more about his character and get a little deeper inside his emotional core.

Evony: Power outage means you know what is on the loose.
Vex: Has he killed the Monopoly Man?
Evony: Hubby and his monocle are safe. I had it stored at my clinic.

Being in that morally ambiguous gray area, Vex has always been an interesting character. Now that he is teamed up with the Light Fae, he is clearly on some sort of redemptive path in this final season. While we saw his friendship with Kenzi, and his father figure relationship with Massimo, we are now getting a closer look at his heart.

While his sexuality has always been ambiguously portrayed, Mark is an interesting love interest. He is younger and has yet to fully become Fae, having just learned of his nature. His innocence is in complete contrast to Vex's experience in the Fae world. I would like to see Mark become integral to Vex's redemption story, whether in a romantic capacity or otherwise. I have really enjoyed all of their scenes, but especially the last scene where they are playing beer pong, and Vex is contemplating the meaning of his vision.

If Zeus and his ancient bunch are wreaking havoc in our colony's skies, why am I stuck here in Cheers with you lot? I feel like I've picked the worst lane in the shittiest traffic of all time.

Vex

Tamsin played a smaller role than she has elsewhere this season. As predicted, it appears her fling with Bo has run its course. When Bo let her down as gently as possible, she was obviously angry, and I am curious (and afraid) to see what happens to a Valkrie scorned. If love is a battlefield, I would not want to be Bo right now.

Will Tamsin switch sides? What do the ancients have in store for Bo? What do you hope to see on Lost Girl Season 5 Episode 8, as well as in the second half of the season?

Don't forget, you can watch Lost Girl online at TV Fanatic to catch up before the midseason finale.
