Chasing Life Season 2 Episode 1 Review: A View from the Ledge

That was some vintage drama, right?

Chasing Life Season 2 Episode 1 marked the return of ABC Family's best drama and the hour proved that there is no sophomore slump in sight for the show.

The season opened with April living a care-free life and running her own business. Yes, that was a dream, but it paved the way for Raquel to make a cameo. I really like this character and was wondering how she would fit into April's life away from the Boston Globe. Let's hope April has some more dreams... or not.

Pining for One Another? - Chasing Life Season 2 Episode 1

The dream sequence had April paired up with Dom rather than Leo. I'm the first to admit that Dom brought nothing to the show in Chasing Life Season 1, but he really brought a lot tonight. It's clear he still loves April and she's the one that got away for him and that sucks. Far too often, TV shows put obstacles in the way of having the core romance interrupted and it just feels forced. The good thing about this show is that the storylines mesh together naturally.

Based on the dream sequence, we know that April is unsure what to make of her feelings for Dom, and it's perfectly understandable. April doesn't have all the time in the world right now, so she needs to choose the right man for her. She might be pushing ahead with her rushed wedding, but don't expect her to stick with Leo.

Everything is up in the air at the moment, and I'll be happy with whomever she chooses. Speaking of the rushed wedding arrangements, it's only natural that April's family would question whether she should be getting married and if it's the best thing for her. Sara took the best approach, and hit the nail on the head when she concluded that April feels like her life has been cut short, so she's rushing into it, and the wedding won't go ahead. Sara, haven't you seen the freaking trailer? There is an aisle, and April is most certainly walking down it.

I do feel really bad for Natalie. She knew she was setting herself up for disaster when she paired up with Dom in the first place, but it's evident that she really loves him. Although she knew about his feelings for April, she still wanted him to say he wasn't leaving her when she ushered him out of her apartment. It remains to be seen if she will take him back, but I'm hoping she sticks to her guns and finds someone who genuinely likes her and isn't pining after someone else.

Did anyone else tear up at April speaking to her mom about accepting her life? I can't begin to imagine what is going through her mind, but it was very mature of her to come to terms with it. With the chemotherapy not working, the odds sure look to be stacked against her. Conversely, Sara must hearing her daughter accept that she could die. A parent never expects to outlive a child, so this was just one of the other emotionally charged scenes in the summer premiere.

As much as I like Brenna, she works much better with Greer, and it's obvious the show is pushing her in the opposite direction. I can't say that I'm thrilled about this change, and I'm betting it's down to the availability of Grace Dzienny, but I hope they manage to lock her in for a guest appearance to close off this storyline.

One of the biggest shocks in "A View from the Ledge" has got to be the reveal that Thomas Carver was dying and wrote the manuscript of a novel about his life and how he died. I think the reaction on Natalie's face pretty shocked us all at home. Natalie is going to feel some resentment toward April because of the whole Dom situation, but I hope she doesn't become a bitch and hide this information from her sisters.

This was a fantastic opener, and it has set the stage for what is sure to be a dramatic sophomore run. Let's hope the ratings go up a little so that we can get that season 3 renewal.

Other tidbits from the episode:

  • Brenna making it known to Leo that he now lives in a house full of women was downright hilarious. The look on his face when she commented about the toilet seat was just priceless.
  • Leo's parents seem to think that Leo is marrying April as a gesture of goodwill or something. I hope they are proven wrong soon enough.
  • Does anyone else miss George? Now that Helix is done, I'm holding out hope that he will return.
  • What did everyone think of April's short lived new job? Was she right to throw in the towel?
  • Rachel's chemo friend seems to be a new recurring addition to the cast. I loved how she made me feel bad for ruling her as a bitch.
