Awkward Season 5 Episode 1 Review: Prank Amateurs

at .  Updated at .

Who knew that Awkward could return with one of the best episodes in years?

Awkward Season 5 Episode 1 found our favorite characters battling several life changes and it just goes to show how grown up these people have become – even if they were streaking the school corridors.

Perhaps the biggest conflict has got to be Gabbie and Jake's sexico in Mexico. Matty just can't seem to catch a break. After all the drama with Eva on Awkward Season 4 it appeared he was with someone who genuinely cared for him, but that wasn't the case.

Though I do question how stupid the cheaters were to discuss it in that closet, I liked that Jenna found out.

She could have easily used it as leverage to get Matty's attention, but she chose not to. In fact, she had no clue how best to proceed. Would he even have believed her if she came clean?

Probably not. Even though he wants to play happy families, all of us at home know that deep down, he wants Jenna back, but she's too busy with the marine, who she isn't even freaking happy with.

Jenna, are you running through the hallway naked? Oh wait, you just reminded me that I need a haircut.

As much as I'd like Jenna and Matty to give in to temptation, that won't happen with so many episodes left. I do believe it'll happen. If it doesn't, Awkward Season 5 would be a total waste.

Elsewhere, Tamara continued to act pretty crazy. Sure, she's engaged, but she just wasn't feeling it and set out to end it, but by the end of episode, she was all set to choose a wedding date. Like, why? I don't see her getting back with Jake, but she won't last with this dude very long. There's only so much cosmic wit someone can take from her, before she gives them a permanent headache.

Sadie returned to being the brightest part of the show, and it was all because her mother returned. You can only imagine the zingers she through to the woman who abandoned her and made her live with someone who despises her. She has a lot of making up to do, and it wouldn't be natural if it happened in the blink of an eye.

Cole and Theo were barely present, but if you read our interview with Monty Geer, you'll know that they will be more prominent this season than last which is pretty good. They really are full of pranks and are an excellent addition to the show.

"Prank Amateurs" was a solid opener to the final season and it's set the wheels in motion for an interesting farewell to one of the funniest shows on television. Something just worked really well about it and if Gabbie is cut out of the story soon, it will make it a whole lot better

Is that your marine? He's way out of your league. I want one.
