The Big Bang Theory Season 9 Episode 23 Review: The Line Substitution Solution

at .  Updated at .

It might actually be happening, you guys!

Leonard and Penny are going to try have a wedding ceremony that actually includes their friends and family, and with any luck, we as the audience will also get to see in its entirety.

A visit from Leonard's mother on The Big Bang Theory Season 9 Episode 23 sets the plan into motion, as Penny struggles desperately to bond with her mother-in-law.

But much like Beverly prefers Sheldon to Leonard, she also prefers Amy to Penny, carrying on long conversations with her and Bernadette while largely ignoring Penny.

It's not surprising, but it is incredibly frustrating. That is, until we realize why Beverly is being extra cold to Penny.

I'm still human, Penny. Not getting invited to my own son's wedding is difficult to ignore.

Beverly

I'm right there with you, Beverly!

Seriously. By now, I had lost all hope.

I complained before that The Big Bang Theory Season 9 Episode 1 was a disappointment, giving us a wedding that felt anti-climactic and, suspiciously, didn't let us see the moment where Penny and Leonard were actually pronounced husband and wife.

I held out hope after that episode that we'd get something more, and now it looks like that's finally going to happen.

Amy's issues in this episode revolve, of course, around her relationship with Sheldon.

Sheldon chooses to wait in line for a  movie screening rather than go shopping with Amy as planned, but rather than be honest, he literally pays Stuart some money to take his place.

And you know something? As much as I've disliked Stuart lately, he redeems himself a little in this installment.

He becomes a pawn in a disagreement between Sheldon and Amy, where they pay him for various tasks including actually making an apology on Sheldon's behalf.

It sounds downright terrible, and as the rest of the group joins in too, Stuart isn't the kind of character for which we have much respect. But I think he redeems himself because he's funny while he does it, and he's also not ashamed of making all kinds of cash for the simplest of tasks.

Sheldon does end up making an apology to Amy, and while it doesn't feel exactly sincere, it's still one he's put some thought into. He knows the three steps of a proper apology, and he illustrates those well.

Even if he does have an Uber waiting for him outside.

Other Thoughts:

  • Of course Howard pretends he's being interviewed on a regular basis. I'd expect nothing less.
  • Christine Baranski as Leonard's mom is fabulous every time.
  • Sheldon's argument with the man who cuts in line at the theater is a great moment, but even better is when Sheldon gets called out for cutting the line himself. Boy, there area lot of rules when it comes to lines.

You know the golden rule of line etiquette. No cuts, no butts, no coconuts.

Sheldon
