Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 13 Review: Can Josh Take a Leap of Faith?

at .

They say love makes you crazy – it's never held quite as much weight as it does now.

On Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 13 Rebecca is thrilled to be saying 'I do,' surrounded by her dad, and friends, and her dad, and family, and her dad – but did she actually become Mrs. Joshua Felix Chan?

With buried secrets coming to the surface, Trent back in town, and God calling, it's not surprising that ReJoshecca ChaBunch's big day ended the way it did.

It's a lovely day to chat about a wedding, so let's dive in and answer some of those questions!

Do They, or Don't They? - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 13

Rebecca: Um, it's three days until out wedding! Can you believe it?
Josh: Oh, yes. So exciting. Then it will all be over with.
Rebecca: Hey!
Josh: I mean, a wedding is great, but I'm excited for our actual life together to start.
Rebecca: Aw, that's sweet – but weddings are also really important.

I'm just going to start by saying that this episode made my head spin.

I've had the luxury of time to sit and ponder this one before writing about it – and it took a few watches for me to really decide how I felt about such a twisty – and twisted – hour of television.

Did I think Rebecca and Josh would go through with their wedding? Heck, no.

Did I forsee Josh becoming a priest, and discovering that Rebecca's mental health is far more damaged than we ever knew?

That would be a HUGE 'heck, no.'

I've often mentioned how impressed I am by the writing staff of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

“Can Josh Take a Leap of Faith?” penned by series co-creator Aline Brosh-McKenna, somehow goes leaps and bounds beyond impressive – it's basically a work of art that's been delicately constructed over the last two seasons.

Oh, Robert? - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 13

Who the Dickens is Robert?

Heather

Let's start with the big stuff – Robert.

Like you, when I heard Rebecca say, “Oh, Robert,” my eyes grew wide, and I muttered to myself, “Who the heck is Robert?”

That's when I decided that I needed to go back in Rebecca's character history, searching for mentions of Robert, or clues that alluded to his existence.

I'll be damned if I could find any. Super sleuths out there, point some out to me! I'm at a loss.

But in a way, Robert's existence explains so much – Rebecca's obsession, her inability to cope with disappointment, her thought process by which fire cleanses things – it all makes a little more sense now.

So what's the real takeaway from learning about Robert?

We know that she's acted out before – she's been arrested for it, and stood before a judge.

We know that she was expelled from Harvard Law before she could truly begin there.

She thought she was going to marry Robert – and that he would leave his wife for her. And when he didn't, she turned to arson.

Nurse 1: What's with this one?
Nurse 2: She sings to herself all day. No one knows why.

Most importantly though, we learned that her coping mechanism while institutionalized for her crazy act of love was to pretend that her life was a musical.

So, it turns out that she's sung this tune before – Josh Chan isn't the first man to drive her to madness.

But neither was Robert.

Bad Dad - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 13

Rebecca's father is the original Josh Chan.

And he's also a major dick. (Thanks for calling that out for us, Nathaniel!)

Aw, did you think Daddy was here without an agenda? That's sweet.

OF COURSE he wanted money from Rebecca. Why would he suddenly be a great guy, just supporting his daughter? We should all know better.

Back on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 1 Episode 3, a boyband made up of four Joshes sang to Rebecca about being a stand-in for her dad, and alluded to her serious abandonment issues, all stemming from her father leaving during her childhood birthday party.

And during Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 1 Episode 15  the Dream Ghosts showed Rebecca what was really happening behind the scenes when her father let her down, yet again, and her mother gave him hell for it.

Rebecca is drawn to men who are like her father because she's desperately trying to play out a scenario where he doesn't leave her – and so far she's always come up empty.

And now that she's fully embraced the fact that she's a “lil' bit,” crazy, it might be time for all of the men who've scorned her to watch their backs.

He Got the Call - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 13

Josh: Father Rodrigo, I got the call, and I'm here to answer it. I want the cool t-shirt. Tell God I'm usually a size large. I want to become -
[cut to Rebecca at the wedding]
Rebecca: A PRIEST?! Josh is leaving me to become a priest?
Father Brah: Yeah, dude.

Starting with Josh, the first guy to get her “SO WEIRD, RIGHT?” text, who's suddenly heard the call of God, wants the t-shirt, and is becoming a priest!

Wow.

This move makes sense for Josh, a guy who's been aimless all year.

His conversations with Father Brah make him think that priesthood is a totally cool, albeit totally sexless, life.

Josh is finally doing away with his quick fixes – using women as band-aids (more on that in a moment) to solve the bigger problems he faces, which ironically is an inability to face things.

And while it's great that it's not another woman that Josh is jumping to, I do think that the priesthood is a drastic choice, and I'm not convinced it will be the lifestyle he lands in permanently.

But the idea of Josh turning to God right as Rebecca sets out to destroy his life could make for some interesting comedy next season.

I'm so glad I did that nice thing for you. So selfless of me. Feels so good. And it makes me like myself even better because of it. You know, I mean, anybody can buy a guy a plane ticket, but to send a whole plane? Hero is not too strong a word, I don't think.

Nathaniel

Was anyone else surprised that Nathaniel was a dead end here?

I didn't expect him to make a play for Rebecca on her wedding day, but I guess I expected SOMETHING. The build up between them was heavy, and fizzled down to nothing faster than a can of Coke goes flat.

Maybe it's a good thing.

There was a lot going on this hour between Josh, Rebecca's dad, Robert, and Trent. Adding a story with Nathaniel would have been overkill.

We'll just have to wait until next year to see what their relationship will bring, if anything at all.

They'll Never Have Problems Again - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 13

Well Rebecca, you've done it now. You've gotten everything you said you wanted. So take a moment and take a breath - after today you'll start fresh, and finally I'll be the hero of my own story. The princess in the tale. In an unexpected twist it turns out magic exists. I'll feel it in my dress and in my veil. Daddy's little girl, princess of his world that was never something I knew before, but now that I'm a bride, he'll look at me with pride. 'Cause my Daddy will love me, and then in a wonderful way everything in the past will just fall away. My Daddy will love me, and my Mommy will love me, and Josh will love me, and then – I'll never have problems again.

Rebecca

Rebecca's ballad mash-up of Crazy Ex songs from Seasons 1 & 2 was perfect. It was, in my opinion, the most beautiful and emotional moment to occur on the series. Brutally honest, and a deep look into what drives Rebecca; love putting a band-aid on all of her problems.

And suddenly, the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 promo posters seem sad. Rebecca is much more broken than we ever knew.

Pulling from “You Ruined Everything,” “I Love My Daughter,” “I'm the Villain in My Own Story,” and “We'll Never Have Problems Again,” the very raw performance tugged at every string in my heart.

There were tears, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

It may be my favorite performance by Rachel Bloom of all time.

Rebecca's innocent and delusional hope in that moment feels earned – despite the fact that we just know everything will fall apart minutes later.

But that moment - that one indescribable instant – was lovely.

White Josh: I don't know, I'm just not big into marriage in general. You know that.
Darryl: No, I don't know that. That's not a thing that I know.
White Josh: What? Oh, yeah. No, it's just not my thing. Most people get divorced. You got divorced.

Let's switch gears to chat about Darryl and White Josh, the couple that makes me swoon.

White Josh doesn't want to get married.

I didn't expect that.

Then again, WhiJo is mature, analytical, wise, and thoughtful. In another way, it's not surprising that he wouldn't want to get married when he sees all of the issues it can potentially lead to around him.

But what he has with Darryl seems stronger than that. Maybe he never wanted to get married because he'd not yet met the right man.

I don't know if they'll actually have a baby – but I do love the relationship WhiJo is building with Madison.

I just hope that these are things that will ultimately bring Darryl and White Josh closer together, and not the major (and legitimate) issues that will tear them apart.

Squad Goals - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 13

Paula: Listen, we are gonna make Josh pay. I promise you, I will help you. We'll TP his house, we'll hack his facebook, we'll key his car -
Rebecca: No, no, no. We can't do any of those things.
Paula: Why not?
Rebecca: Because they're not enough. Because Josh Chan must be destroyed.
Paula: What did you have in mind?

Listen, I'm all for a fierce female squad, but is anyone else a little worried about how quickly Paula has flipped on Josh, knowing how devious she can be?

Valencia's got every reason to do Josh in, and Rebecca's embracing her unhinged side.

Josh Chan isn't gonna know what hit him when #GurlGroup4Eva rolls his way. They're going to actually try to destroy him.

Unless Heather stops them all, because she's the only one who can.

The finale leaves things in a much darker place than Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 1 Episode 18 did.

When the show returns for its third year, I have a feeling we're going to see a very different Rebecca than the one we currently know and love.

Because as the saying goes, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” and if there's one thing Rebecca is (you know, other than crazy,) it's scorned.

I think I'm going to love Angry Becks.

Evil Spells Veil - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 13

Side Notes:

  • Trent didn't need to happen. STOP TRYING TO MAKE TRENT HAPPEN.
  • Does anyone else think Hector is boning his mom?
  • Raise your hand if during that “I Could If I Wanted To” music cue you half-expected Greg to show up to talk sense into Josh? *raises hand*
  • Were Maya and Karen not invited to the wedding, but Nathaniel was?
  • What was the Westchester Sperm Machine's big hit?
  • All brides should make Rebecca's angry bride song their ringtones while wedding planning. Period.
