Gotham Season 5 Episode 5 Review: Pena Dura

at .

Before we talk about anything else, I have one question.

What the hell is Jeremiah up to now?

It was no surprise to find that Jeremiah survived Selina's knife attack and was recovering in a hidden room in his fortress on Gotham Season 5 Episode 5. The guy is invincible.

What's Going On? - Gotham Season 5 Episode 5

Won't everyone be shocked when he shows up to wreak more havoc on an already decimated city?

But first, it seems he's going to mess with Bruce Wayne a little more.

Jeremiah has already done a number on the love of Bruce's life. Selina has changed in more ways than one, and there's no turning back for her except maybe at the very end of her criminal career many, many years down the road.

Now, it appears that Jeremiah has created clones of Thomas and Martha Wayne which is a completely insane thing to do, but would we expect anything less from the future Clown Prince of Crime?

Big Surprise - Gotham Season 5 Episode 5

It clearly indicates that Jeremiah wants to break Bruce in the cruelest of ways, and after Selina's revelation that she witnessed his parents' murder and did nothing, Bruce is going to be at a very vulnerable point.

But maybe not.

While Selina's revelation was distressing to him, it may be what pushes him to the very brink of his transformation into the Dark Knight.

Bruce: What if we don't make it out of this?
Harvey: I'm not going to lie, kid. These past few months, I've wondered the same thing. And when I don't know what to do, I come up here and dig into these case files, sit my ass down, and get to work. I used to hate this kind of paperwork. Now, it's the only thing that keeps me going.
Bruce: Why?
Harvey: Because the little things matter. Act by act, link by link, it matters even if no one notices or cares.

Jeremiah showing up with Thomas and Martha Wayne will push him right over the edge, and all that anger that's locked inside will come rushing out.

There has to be a turning point for Bruce, and this is it. We're almost to the halfway point of the final season, so Bruce needs to cross that threshold soon.

Now onto the rest of this crazy episode!

Up Close and Personal - Gotham Season 5 Episode 5

We finally got introduced to the man who eventually becomes Bane.

Jim's old Army buddy is not on the right side of the law even with his claim that Walker was behind Ed's bizarre mind control experiment.

And guessing by his inquiry into Scarecrow's whereabouts, he's going to don that face mask sooner rather than later (a great bit of foreshadowing by the way).

Slice and Dice - Gotham Season 5 Episode 5

I don't understand xactly why Eduardo (or Walker) wanted Jim to put a bullet in Ed's head. The only reason I can think of was to see if Jim would fall in line or present a problem to the government's end goal.

It doesn't make sense that they'd want Ed dead after spending so much time (and money, I suppose) programming Ed only to shut him down so soon.

I guessed right in my Gotham Season 5 Episode 4 review that committing mass murder was not part of Ed's MO -- not even as The Riddler.

He was shocked and ashamed by what he did, but at least now he knows that he wasn't responsible for blowing up Haven.

Old Friend - Gotham Season 5 Episode 5

Unfortunately, he has no way to take back his mind -- at least not yet -- and I wonder if he'll end up turning to Jeremiah and his doctors to help him remove that chip from his brain.

Ed's predicament also makes me wonder what might have happened to Lee. If Strange was contracted to experiment on Ed, it only makes sense that she was tinkered with, too.

It's curious why the government is working against Jim and the GCPD. It could be that they have no idea what Eduardo is doing. He could be working on his own.

Maybe he has a vendetta against Jim that we aren't privy to yet.

Bad Feeling - Gotham Season 5 Episode 5

Whatever the real reason is and whether or not it's all Dorrance or the government is involved, none of it bodes well for Jim, the GCPD, or Gotham itself.

And the fact that Jim is on the run from Eduardo and robot Ed means that he's about to put many people in danger.

Barbara and Harvey immediately come to mind. I don't see Barbara getting harmed (because, you know, Baby Batgirl,) but Harvey is another story.

He'd take a bullet for Jim. I just hope if and when it happens, it's not a permanent thing, but the way Gotham likes to play, anything is possible.

Evil Mastermind - Gotham Season 5 Episode 5

Ed and Penguin finally reunited after Ed concluded that Oswald was behind his head issues.

It was a sweet moment for Nygmobbletpot fans. At one point, it looked like Oswald was about to confess his love for Ed but instead, he told Ed he just wanted to help his only friend.

Ed didn't know what to make of it, but he had to think it was strange that Oswald named his dog after him, and I loved that it was the first thing Ed mentioned when there were tons of other things he needed to discuss.

Helping Out - Gotham Season 5 Episode 5

Despite all of Oswald's proclamations, in the end, Oswald proved that the only person he truly cares about is himself.

He was willing to give up Ed if it meant saving his own skin, and if he was willing to give up the man he so desperately and secretly loves, there's no hope for Oswald or Nygmobblepot for that matter.

Jim was right when he reminded Oswald he had no friends. It was a cruel thing to say, and his words were like a dagger, but Oswald knew it was true.

Oswald has reached his breaking point, Jeremiah has upped his level of insanity, and Bane has arrived.

Hope has become a pipe dream in Gotham, but that's all about to change soon enough.
