Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 9 Review: Shelter From the Storm

at .

Oh, Grey's, how I have missed you.

Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 9 started the year off right with a sexy, funny, tragic, and endearing hour that got the ball rolling and moved the plots that were dragging forward.

Even the love triangle wasn't as annoying. Which love triangle, you ask? Both of them.

A Girl Likes to Have Fun - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 9

The hour picked up where Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 8 left off with some of the doctors stuck in their respective elevators. The show wasted no time by ripping the band-aids off on the biggest secrets.

Maggie did tell Jackson about Catherine's diagnosis (and I'll leave you guys to bicker about that in the comments), and Amelia found out about Teddy and Owen's love child. The intensity intensifies!

The latter was far more entertaining, and that is in large part due to the comedic chops and timing of Caterina Scorsone. She was phenomenal and freaking hilarious from the facial expressions to the commentary while GI Joe and Jane improvised a shotgun surgery and worked through their issues as if she wasn't in the room.

Teddy: It doesn't matter.
Owen: It doesn't matter?
Teddy: I just mean that no one is asking anything from you. No one is asking you to give up anything or anyone. It's just you needed to know.
Amelia: What?
Owen: Teddy's pregnant.
Amelia: It's yours?! OK!

Amelia made the best of that situation and served as the audience surrogate during those scenes, and Scorsone killed it. How could you not empathize with the woman? It's such a complicated scenario.

I have a soft spot for military doctors because of their ingenuity and creativity in the field. It was impressive how Teddy and Owen could bicker and have this life-altering conversation while performing trauma surgery in an elevator with random bits they found at hand.

They got a high from it too. Owen and Teddy were like poetry in motion and working in perfect harmony with one another with that practiced ease and familiarity that served as a reminder that they have a long history and have always been in tune with one another. They speak a language of their own and have a shorthand of their own.

Amelia Learns the Truth - Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 9

Poor Amelia was out of her element, but she saw what so many others have seen when it comes to Owen and Teddy. She saw how they interacted and how connected they were, and even though she threw in some great one-liners and snarky comments about how effed up Teddy was for keeping all of this from Owen for 16 weeks.

It should be disappointing that Amelia is giving Owen the space to figure things out in light of this news, but it was a mature decision.

Owen: Amelia, I'm so sorry.
Amelia: Please, I"m the one who said go to Germany. Go see Teddy. I should have said take condoms. It's funny, I think back to that, and I really wanted it to work for you. I wanted you to be happy with her, so maybe --
Owen: No, I'm going to be there for the baby. Anything between Teddy and me is not happening. It's not an option.
Amelia: That's not true, Owen. She's here. She's Teddy, and she's pregnant with your baby. She's an option. You are such a good man, Owen, and I'm going to give you time to consider your options.

Despite her hilarious reactions and responses, Amelia is taking the mature route. She also recognized that she did send him after Teddy back then, and she wanted things to work out for them and for him to be happy.

Amelia was right. Teddy is always an option for Owen. Their final scene together in the scrub room was all the evidence anyone needed. They came close to sharing a kiss again, and there is always something there between them, now more than ever with her carrying his child.

Teddy's Confession - Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 8

He's the type of guy who would be swayed by that sort of thing and jump into putting her in this cookie-cutter idea of what family is. Owen still hasn't grasped that family is messier and more complicated than that, and he can have one that doesn't look traditional.

Amelia also made the best choice by sending Betty to rehab. She needs it, and what's beautiful about the moment the two of them shared upon her return is that Betty now knows that Amelia loves her unconditionally and isn't severing their bond permanently just because she's sending her to get help.

Richard taking the girl under his wing was a nice touch too. I like this shift towards him becoming a sponsor on his own and following in the footsteps of his late sponsor and friend. Richard also had some of those classic Chief moments, since he took over while Bailey was locked in the elevator.

Richard was not messing around, and he didn't care how Jed fixed the power, he just wanted it done. He's scary when he means business!

It was a long couple of days for him, so when Jackson and Maggie came to him to presumably share the news about Catherine, one couldn't help but ache for the poor guy even though it cut off before we could see how that conversation went.

I love how this show likes to toy with the more passionate and outspoken lot in fandom. Maggie's choice to tell Jackson would be up for debate, so she explained why she told him the truth, which made sense for her character, and Jackson didn't care about her being the one to share the news. It was something he wanted to know.

Then Maggie herself made the connection to when her mother died a couple of times, more notably when she shared that touching scene with Cece as they waited for surgery.

Cece told her that her unsettled feelings about Jackson could either mean they were terrible for one another (which some of you will agree) or made for each other. Maggie then mentioned that Jackson made her feel safe after her mother died.

Cece: You're afraid?
Maggie: Yeah.
Cece: In my experience, that means one of two things. Either he is terrible for you, or he's so good for you you're scared you'll lose him. Is there ever a time when he made you feel safe?
Maggie: When my mother died.

Cece had such an impact on so many of the people at the hospital that her death, while expected was devastating. Hell, Cece's life being in danger is what motivated Jed to be the hero. He adored her and wanted to help her since she led him to the love of his life.

He almost lost his legs in the process. That was a gruesome scene, but thankfully, Jackson was able to talk Link into putting rods in and saving them. Link has to get tired of everyone in that hospital challenging his expertise and authority though.

Cece living was always a long shot, but that wait to get those organs to her didn't help matters at all. For some reason, I thought she was stuck in an elevator too. It turned out she wasn't, and Maggie had to keep her stable until everyone else could get out.

Cece- Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 1

Meredith felt like it was her duty to get to Cece in time to do the surgery. I don't think Cece would have minded Meredith's absence if she knew Meredith was spending her time with DeLuca.

I love DeLuca with my whole heart, but I'm still not feeling this romance. It's a weird development, but I'll roll with it and see where it takes us. How can anyone be mad about a more confident DeLuca who whips out that Italian like it's his job to seduce?

It crossed my mind that Meredith probably knew some Italian and she did from her time as an Undergrad (same, girl, but my memory isn't as good), but I still laughed when she answered him back in kind after his naughty and admittedly hot confession about what he wanted to do to her.

Deluca [In Italian]: When you finally let me kiss you, and I will kiss you, I won't ever stop.
Meredith [In Italian]: Did I tell you I took three years of Italian in undergrad?

We also learned a bit more about DeLuca's backstory. His father was a well-known surgeon too, but he was an infamous one. It still doesn't make sense that he and his sister were separated, but fair enough.

Meredith can't fight the attraction, and DeLuca is relentless. All you MerLuca 'shippers out there were probably squealing in delight when they almost kissed one another. Meredith can't articulate why she should keep away from DeLuca, so she's open to dating him, or whatever it is she plans to do with him.

She's also open to seeing Link too. While MerLuca still does nothing for me in theory, and MerLink is far too underdeveloped to work as a viable option, Meredith playing the field isn't so bad. It would be awesome if she kept things casual and flirty and didn't commit to either guy.

Free at Last - Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 9

She needs something more with Link though. There are enough people who would want to pull for him just because he's someone new and different, but he's such an underdeveloped character, and Carmack is getting shafted here. Nevertheless; you keep those boys on their toes, Mer!

Bailey and Helm had the task of keeping Cece's organ donor alive, but they were having the worst time. The two of them were feeding off each other's anxiety, which was less than ideal given they were stuck in an elevator together on top of everything else.

Helm is another character that we don't see a lot out of, but what has been consistent is how she has become more emotional while treating patients. When she first arrived, she seemed unaffected by things and didn't allow herself to be attached at all. That has changed drastically.

Bailey: Please don't quit. Um, I need time to get some things straightened out. I need your help.
Alex: Hey, whatever you want. It's OK. It's alright.

The best, and sweetest moment with Bailey, however, was when she confided in Alex. Alex fought through a storm so he could make it to the hospital and be the leader that he strives to be, but he felt cast aside when Bailey took over leading and then ordered him to do her surgery.

He didn't realize that she only did that because of her anxiety flaring up. Bailey needs Alex more than ever now, and he needed to hear how much she relied on him. When he comforted her, I got a bit misty-eyed.

Bailey will always have a soft spot for Alex and Meredith. They're like her babies, and when they have those special moments where the depth of their close bond comes through it's touching. Bailey trusts Alex as interim chief, even though their styles are different.

Many Options - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 9

That was apparent when he busted in on Levi and Nico in their afterglow and ordered them to get back into the hospital. It was adorable how they were so concerned about their jobs after that moment. Were they unaware of where they work?

Little did they know, Alex practically invented having sex in the hospital. It was pretty amusing when instead of punishing them he told them of better options for their sexytimes that include doors that lock. The hour was not without many comical moments, and that's when Grey's is the most fun.

Alex: That can't happen. What happened today cannot happen.
Nico: I understand
Levi: I'm so sorry.
Alex: Oncall rooms. Storage closets, that weird little radiology room on four. Those rooms have locks. Understand?
Nico: Yes sir.
Levi: Completely.
Alex: Good. Think!

Over to you, Grey's Fanatics! Are you feeling this chemistry between Meredith and DeLuca? How sad was Cece's death?! Did Amelia make the right choice?
