Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 8 Review: That Way and This Way Shifts the Sand of Punahoa

McGarrett was unwilling to take the time to properly grieve.

Still, it was debatable if that affected his judgment on Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 8.

Steve was still processing his absentee mother Doris's death on Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 7.

That, and ducking Danny's phone calls checking up on him.

Did that affect his choices in the case that followed?

Unexpected Visitor - Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 8

Maybe.

The case started out simple enough.

A man wandered out of the jungle and collapsed. Then he woke up and killed the medivac crew that was trying to save him.

Talk about ungrateful.

So Steve had a killer that his team needed to find and get off the streets pronto. That didn't require much analysis.

That became even more urgent after the killer murdered a store clerk while stocking up on supplies.

Finally, a worthwhile use for a snow globe.

Fortunately, he was stupid enough to steal a burner phone that could get tracked.

Law-enforcement databases failed Five-0 when they ran a police sketch of the killer.

But they did have two lines of investigations: Tracking the cell phone and figuring out why the killer was in the jungle in the first place.

Tani and Quinn heard movement at the house to where they tracked the cell signal.

When they plus McGarrett crashed inside, they found someone unexpected: A DEA agent.

New Confidant - Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 8

Make that an obnoxious, full-of-himself DEA agent, who deigned to let Steve and Five-0 help him capture the killer, Ben Tam.

Neither McGarrett nor Quinn trusted him.

But when they tracked that house to Bishop, Wes Cullen's former number-two, things started happening fast and furious. So they didn't have a chance to follow up on their hunches.

That's because the rest of their team -- Adam, Junior, and especially Eddie -- were off in the jungle backtracking Tam's route.

Where would they be without Eddie's unique talents? Wandering in the jungle, I suspect.

Independent of a cell signal, they quickly learned that Tam had wandered away from a planeful of heroin.

Thanks to Quinn's timely warning, they also discovered they weren't going to be alone for long.

It was laughable that the thugs quickly realized that their "camouflaged" plane had been disturbed, because a branch or two was out of place.

So rather than loading up quickly and running, they decided to track the decoy footprints into Adam and Junior's crossfire.

Equally unlikely was that Adam and Junior weren't carrying more spare ammo on their persons.

Of course, the cavalry arrived in time, taking down the smugglers, with even Eddie getting into the act, clamping down on the last one.

Here's where Steve fell short, failing to check up on Gormican before letting him haul off all those drugs.

I also don't get how Gormican got the drop on the Marshals, who also probably should have verified him as well before taking part in his operation.

Fortunately, Five-0 was able to suss out Gormican's plan in time to disrupt the sale to the Croatian gangsters. Yes, that came together rather conveniently as well.

Did Steve make a wrong call coming back so soon?

Probably, but his choices were limited. Danny was away, again, and Grover was off duty with his niece Siobhan.

Does McGarrett end up talking to somebody about it, such as an attractive shrink, or the pretty vet from Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 4?

That's another possibility, however unlikely. He's not a guy to talk about his feelings. He's more likely to bury himself in his work.

Guest Cameo - Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 8

It was also good to see that Grover got his own storyline, once again when he wasn't at work.

First off, it was good to see that Lou and Renee finally completed that downsizing that had been mentioned earlier this season.

What an unlikely tandem: Lou Grover and Metta World Peace. Since the former NBA star played for a half-dozen teams, including the Chicago Bulls, it was entirely plausible the pair could have crossed paths on a golf course.

Grover beating him there, not so much.

It would have been fun to hear the story of why Metta owed him a favor, but it was not to be.

Siobhan must be the daughter of another brother, not Percy, who last we heard was working as a baker in Hawaii.

Special Talent - Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 8

It was funny to watch Siobhan get around a former NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

It was unrealistic to believe that one little dustup and suspension would make any college coach back off a player who had been the number-one prospect in the nation. I'm not sure jail time would.

Not even being such a sullen creature as Siobhan would slow the pursuit.

So the University of Hawaii coach wouldn't essentially put a star player on probation, which is what she was proposing with Siobhan.

One thing about living in a smaller place is that there's nowhere to hold a private conversation, as Lou and Renee found out.

Grover Flashback - Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 8

If Siobhan had hung around for another few minutes, she would have learned that the Grovers would have made things work for her.

At least she set Lou straight when he caught up to her, about her fight and about her plans.

But she could still become a cop after having her scholarship pay for her degree in criminal justice somewhere, even if it wasn't in Hawaii.

A few years in the WNBA could help supplement a policeman's salary in the future as well.

Civil service will always be there.

Did McGarrett come back too soon?

How did you like Grover's storyline?

Who had Bishop killed?
