Sheryl Crow to Guest Star on Cougar Town

On last year's 30 Rock season finale, Sheryl Crow flashed her acting chops a bit.

She'll soon have another chance to, as the singer has signed on for an extended run on Cougar Town. Insiders confirm that Crow has been cast in a three-episode arc as Grayson's upcoming girlfriend.

Look for her character to be a wine distributor. She'll debut this spring.

Cougar Town Review: "All the Wrong Reasons"

Okay we admit we were a little harsh during our review of the last episode of Cougar Town, so we've come into this week's installment, "All the Wrong Reasons," with a much more open mind.  The show has vastly improved since its shaky pilot, and to keep holding our initial reactions is unfair to the show, so here we go!

This week had two main plotlines and one side one, and we'll go over each separately in our review:

Jules and Ellie.  We love with the besties have a plot together, since these two actresses play so well off each other.  This week it was the two of them competing over Ellie's fake boyfriend slash tennis instructor, Alex.  When Jules made Ellie's day all about her, scoring a date with the tennis instructor was the last straw.

Jules Plays Tennis

Ellie finally stood up to Jules and said what we've been thinking since the pilot: boo hoo, sorry your marriage didn't work and you're single and forty, but get over it!  You're still a successful, ridiculously good-looking woman.  I can't imagine life will be that tough, and so far it's been pretty entertaining for us to watch!

Bobby's Bender.  We get why Bobby feels the way he does.  We'd be pretty pissed if we lost Jules and were living on a land-locked boat.  Luckily, Bobby's drinking led to some hilarious adventures with Grayson and Andy.  The three of these guys combined are the strength of the show to us.

Cougar Town Review: "Stop Dragging My Heart Around"

Now that Cougar Town has seemingly become less and less about cougars and more of an ensemble comedy, the show has been exploring the unique relationships between the different characters.  We're just going to go over the various story lines from "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" and discuss what worked and didn't.

Travis and Kylie's first time.  While we could care less about their relationship, it did lead to a funny moment when Travis and Jules both got home in the morning disheveled; and when both parents attempted to parent him later.

Bobby and Jules.  What!?  If it weren't for the massive Cougar Town spoilers, that could have been our reaction.  While we love the goofy, mullet-rocking Bobby, we understand that no serious woman could feel the same way, especially not Jules.  It was funny to see a clingy Bobby just show up with his boat outside Jules' house and it was good to see Jules finally put the guy out of his misery at the end.  Let's hope this pairing never happens again, but we're sure it will.

Jules and Bobby Kiss

Grayson and Laurie hooking up.  For a second when we met up with Laurie we almost felt like we were watching a semi-intelligent girl, only to quickly see it subdued by her craziness and ditziness.  However, most-changed character goes Grayson for showing a jealous side after Bobby tells him he hooked up with Jules.  Not a fan of this pairing, the concept of "somedays" and only enjoyed that it led to a random interaction by Andy.

Andy and Ellie.  The one "stable" relationship of the show would be boring to watch if it weren't for the fantastic Andy.  Ellie was given the sappy voiceover at the end of this episode, and its cheesiness would have ruined the episode, if it not saved by Andy asking if he was gonna get some after her boring speech.

Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel have successfully created an above average sitcom and we have no problem tuning into each week.  We find ourselves drawn to these characters and their various relationships, despite the fact it's not exploring anything new.

I guess as fans of Two and a Half Men, we've set ourselves up for a lifetime of mediocrity.  Now for our favorite Cougar Town quotes after the jump.

Jules and Bobby: Kissing on Cougar Town?

This week's episode of Cougar Town is titled "Stop Dragging My Heart Around."

During the half hour, Jules seeks comfort in Bobby following her break-up with Jeff. Throw in a bottle of wine and (SPOILER ALERT!) this happens:

Also on the episode:

  • Laurie learns of something Jules and Grayson have in common;
  • Plans between Travis and Kylie don't go as planned.

Beverly D'Angelo: Cast on Cougar Town

Beverly D’Angelo is about to be on the prowl.

The veteran actress has landed a guest-starring gig on Cougar Town, as she'll play the white trash mother of Busy Phillips’ Laurie and appear in a February episode. Entertainment Weekly first reported this casting news.

Beverly D

D’Angelo is a familiar face to movie and TV fans. She's probably still best known for playing Clark Griswald's better half in the Vacation franchise, and was most recently seen on the small screen as Ari's partner on Entourage.

Also, in case you missed it, ABC just renewed Cougar Town for a second season.

Cougar Town Review: "Scare Easy"

We were sad to see it, but this week's episode, "Scare Easy," was Scott Foley's last guest starring episode of his three episode arc on Cougar Town.  We've come to love Foley's character, Jeff, and thought him and Jules made a great couple and really took the lame cougar out of the otherwise funny Cougar Town.

So what happened to this great couple?  In the polar opposite of the typical stereotypes, Jeff was ready to settle down, while Jules was still looking to be independent.  Given what we've learned about these two character so far, it was actually very realistic and we liked the way they summed up break ups in the voiceover.  Things do normally just fizzle out.  No dramatic music.

Jules and Jeff Kiss

Meanwhile, the B story involved a much odder pairing as Grayson attempted to stop Laurie from having revenge sex, only to hook up with her himself.  Obviously, at some point Grayson will end up with Jules, but even in the meanwhile we can't picture this intermediate pairing actually working.  Boo.  We were still hoping for a more cougar pairing of Laurie and Travis.

So for an episode that unmathced one of our favorite couples and put together a mismatched one, what did we think?  Well there were enough funny bits, including a dream sequence of Jules and Ellie as a couple, to make the episode entertaining.  We forgive the relationships.

Now for our favorite Cougar Town quotes from Scott Foley's final episode:

Bobby: The paint can game is the greatest thing I've ever created in my life.
Travis: And thank you dad. | permalink
Bobby: Come on T-bone, you can take my ride.
Travis: You know putting golf cart keys on a Ferrari keychain doesn't make it a Ferrari?
Bobby: I was being ironic. | permalink
Bobby: You get a tiny leak in a dam, you gotta plug it up real quick or you'll be in a car with no breaks traveling down trouble highway.
Grayson: Wait, is the highway flooded? Where is this dam? You are mixing metaphors like a crazy person. | permalink
Travis: Are there really women out there that will have sex with me just because they're mad about something?
Laurie: Oh yeah, for sure.
Travis: This is very exciting news.
Laurie: You know there are also girls that will sleep with you because their friends are prettier.
Travis: This just keeps getting better. | permalink

Cougar Town Review: "Rhino Skin"

This week's episode of Cougar Town was the much-hyped Friends reunion of Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow, and the latter fit into the Cougar Town cast just fine.  Kudrow guest starred as the town's master of botox, Dr. Amy Evans, that everyone can stand going to, but loved the results of.

Jules Begs Bobby

Kudrow was great as Evans and the writers loaded her up with plenty of *itchy lines to use against Jules and Ellie.  Our only complaint is that with how well Cox has aged compared to Kudrow it was weird hearing the doctor making fun of Jules' age lines.

The highlight of "Rhino Skin" was the always amazing Andy taking Travis under his wing and teaching him the ways of the woman.  We finally learned how this short little balding man could land a hottie like Ellie.

Meanwhile, not to be left out of the episode, Grayson decided to mentor Laurie and convince her to go for Smith, a rich, smart guy she felt was too good for her.  While this would have seen to be completely out of character for Grayson at the beginning of the season, it only felt slightly forced this week.

Jules continues to date Jeff (Scott Foley) and as we've stated before, we love anything that takes the cougar out of Cougar Town.  Foley makes a much better cast addition than her previous boyfriend and we love having an extra funny, charming guy around.  Cougar Town just keeps getting better and better.

Cougar Town Sneak Peek: Lisa Kudrow Guest Stars

On January 6, Lisa Kudrow guest stars on Cougar Town.

However, the former Friend of Courteney Cox won't exactly be making nice on the episode. We've already shown readers a photo of the actress in her role as a mean plastic surgeon.

Now, get your first look at the actresses in action together. This is a clip of the pair in a scene, as Cox' Jules tries - and fails - to get on Kudrow's good side:

Cougar Town Review: "Mystery Man"

While not as good as last week's episode of Cougar Town, which I called the perfect episode, this week's installment continues to be enjoyable and passably mediocre.

During "Mystery Man," Jules finally meets a man closer in age to her, Jeff (Scott Foley) and actually cancels a date with a young, hot cub, Ryan (Aaron Blake) to go out with him.

Jules and Jeff

We love anything that removes the cougar from Cougar Town.  How about we rename the show Jules Unmarried, or something wittier, and just forget that whole pilot and younger guy premise ever happened.

Luckily, our favorite part of the Cougar Town cast, the guys, were out in full force this week.  The men (and Travis) joined Andy as he attempted to watch his son, Stan.  And by watch we mean set up a prison for.

Overall the episode was decent because of the guys, while Jules plot was fairly light on the laughs.  Either way, we got some of the best Cougar Town quotes from the episode for you.

Ellie: Racist Uncle or Drug Dealer Uncle?
Jules: Racist Uncle. Drug Dealer Uncle is now Prison Uncle.
Ellie: Oh right, because of Cfficer Cousin. | permalink
Bobby: When I was married, you know what Jules said to me?
Grayson: Please stop sleeping with other women? | permalink
Jules: I don't like being alone in my house. I don't know what I'm gonna do when Travis goes to college. He's not really big on the idea of us getting apartment together, even though I said I'd only live there on the weekends. | permalink
Jules: Ryan is super pretty and he's not at all afraid of cologne. | permalink

Cougar Town First Look: Lisa Kudrow Guest Stars

They spent a decade being friends on one of the most popular shows in TV history - but when Lisa Kudrow shows up on Cougar Town next month, she and Courteney Cox won't be yukking it up.

ABC has released the first photo from the January 6 episode on which Kudrow guest stars. She plays a doctor that, as producer Bill Lawrence tells Entertainment Weekly, pretty much sucks.

“They didn’t want to play friends,” Lawrence said. “[Lisa] plays a dermatologist who is a horrible, horrible person, but [Cox] goes to her because she’s the best. The [sight] of them playing people who dislike each other intensely was very funny for me to watch.”

We have a feeling viewers will feel the same way.
