For someone not wishing to date Dr. Sheppard, Meredith has a silly way of showing that. She pounces on him with a kiss when they're alone in a hospital elevator. The other interns, meanwhile, are having their own issues when the cocky Alex is added to Dr. Bailey's team. He joins Cristina is delivering the news to patients of their lab results. Neither of these dour doctors love the hugs they receive from joyful families.
Izzie, fortunately, has a chance to practice some "real medicine" as she sews up minor cuts and injuries. She also is bombarded by pleas from a woman who cannot speak English. It turns out this patient's daughter needs medical assistance, but lacks a green card. The good-hearted Izzie treats the bloody girl in the parking lot.
The confident Dr. Burke, meanwhile, receives a jolt when he discovers that he's no longer first in line for Chief Resident. Dr. Webber brought in his former student, Sheppard, to compete for the position. There seems to be another, unknown reason why Sheppard left New York, however.
Meredith isn't aware of any of this yet, though, because she's been busy carrying around a severed penis all day. It belonged to a rapist whose victim bit it off and is now fighting for her life in the hospital. Sheppard impresses Meredith with how sensitive he is to this poor, lonely woman - but it's not enough for another kiss. When Meredith has a chance to ride the elevator with him again, she chooses the stairs instead.
