On Major Crimes Season 4 Episode 8, the unit faces two related challenges when they reopen a kidnapping from three years ago. Kevin Clarke, then a teenager, had been kidnapped and held for ransom, but never returned after the ransom was paid. Now some tabloid news show claims Kevin has been seen in Brazil and some of the ransom money has been deposited in an LA bank. Thus, the case is reopened. Worse still, from Major Crimes' viewpoint, the team must work with Special Agent Jerry Shay, a possibly corrupt FBI agent who caught the case when it first began.

Shay is arrogant, obnoxious and takes credit for all of the Major Crimes Unit's hard work. He also seems to continually get in Sharon's way and try to insist on doing this his way. Sharon wins many major battles, b ut he wins the war when he grabs some evidence and leaves with it.

The Major Crimes Unit finds out that they are dealing with a murder, not a kidnapping ,and must race against time when Shay decides the parents are responsible and seeks to arrest them. Meanwhile, Rusty discovers his new job isn't all it's cracked up to be when he first alienates TJ then forces a witness to reveal a bunch of painful truths in his quest for Alice's story.
