Darlene has plans drawn up for her new home. She wants to finish the basement, so Mark has a place to hang out with his friends. But Ben thinks finishing the basement isn’t realistic, and Darlene should just seal it. He also says she should put two sinks in the main bathroom instead of one for resale value. Darlene says she’s not interested in resale value as she plans to live in this house for the rest of her life.

At the Lunch Box, Becky realizes that Ben may still have feelings for Darlene when he admits that he’d have missed Darlene if she had moved to Rockford.

Later, Ben and Darlene argue while they’re on the roof of the house, inspecting the stones in the chimney. Ben feels like Darlene never listens to him, and Darlene feels that Ben tries to undermine her independence.

When Darlene falls through the rotting wood on the roof, Ben runs to her aid. When he realizes that she’s okay, he kisses her.

Ben takes Darlene to the hospital, where he proposes. When he thought he had lost her, Ben says he realized he didn't want to lose her. Darlene says she couldn’t handle it if he changes his mind again. She wants total amnesty for everything she ever did. Ben agrees. Ben just wants them to spend the rest of their lives together. Darlene says yes.

Mark begins taking contrabassoon lessons from Lou Vitori, Beverly’s old boyfriend. Dan thinks Lou is too hard on Mark and threatens Lou to get him to lighten up. When Lou quits, Mark says he can handle anything Lou throws at him in order to get where he wants to go. Mark tells Dan to get Lou to come back.

Dan apologizes to Lou. Lou says he doesn’t think there’s enough time for Mark to become good enough to earn a college scholarship. Dan assures him that no one wants this more than Mark, and if Lou is as good as he says he is, Mark will make him proud. Lou agrees to come back.
