Andrew McCarthy to Direct Gossip Girl Episode

Andrew McCarthy, iconic teen movie star of the ’80s (Pretty in Pink, Less Than Zero), is getting back to his roots by directing an episode of Gossip Girl.

McCarthy, who will direct an episode set to air in the spring, says the Gossip Girl cast is different than the '80s youngsters known as the Brat Pack.

“They are much more savvy than we were,” McCarthy says.

“We were just a bunch of dumb kids running around.”

Lily's Dad

McCarthy, an unabashed Gossip Girl fan who you may remember played Lily's father in the ill-fated Gossip Girl spinoff pilot at the end of Season Two, is excited to get behind the camera to direct the steamy show in the present day.

“We have a nice episode, all sorts of juicy little things happen - the normal Gossip Girl juicy things,” McCarthy says, although he won't elaborate.

“I can’t give you much, except there is a 9 1/2 Weeks kind of thing going on in one story,” he says, referring to the 1986 drama starring Mickey Rourke athat chronicled an affair between an art gallery assistant and a businessman.

McCarthy’s episode will air when the show returns in 2010.
