Did they really just do that?

In a shocking move that's very un-soap like, Nashville Season 3 Episode 2 revealed the father of Juliette's baby in the final moments of the hour. I, for one, am relieved we don't have to spend half the season playing the who's my baby-daddy game.

A part of me doesn't want to believe it because it seems too easy, but let's go with it for now. I'll be perfectly happy without some plot twist later where we find out Jeff somehow really is the father. No, thank you!

What'll be interesting to see develop next is Juliette's handling of the news. Will she tell Avery right away? Will she keep it a secret for fear of losing out on the Patsy Cline role? I hope she tells Avery sooner rather than later. Although, I'll be eagerly awaiting her reaction when she finds out about Avery's recent hookup.

That fight scene between the two of them reminded me why I enjoy watching their scenes the most. Hayden Panettiere and Jonathan Jackson have terrific chemistry. Avery is clearly distraught over their breakup and him lashing out at her certainly doesn't help the situation.

Juliette, being the headstrong woman that she is, threw herself into the part of Patsy Cline for her second round of auditioning. All her personal troubles are really lending themselves to her performance, and the producers seem to agree. I hope she gets the part, but I'm not sure if they'll still want her once her pregnancy comes to light.

Elsewhere in the episode, Rayna was learning that the old ways of staying on top of the charts aren't going to cut it anymore. It's an interesting perspective from the side of the celebrity. We live in a world now where we expect to have access to famous people by way of Twitter, Instagram, etc. If a celebrity wants to be private, it can be seen as alienating to their fans.

Rayna conceded by adding more public appearances (Hello GMA and Luke Bryan!), tour dates, and speaking out about her engagement to Luke. Speaking of Luke, what's his deal with Rayna's upbringing? I get that he had a drastically different childhood, but he seems to be very focused on Rayna's family's wealth. He's clearly successful in his own right, so I just find the whole thing rather odd.

Deacon and Maddie got to spend some quality time together. Except most of it was spent with Maddie whining. It's understandable that she would lash out at Deacon. She is a teenager after all. Maddie was so heartbroken when she found out Deacon did propose to her mom.

The look on Deacon's face when Maddie said she wished it had been him instead of Luke was heartbreaking. Now he'll be pulled away from Maddie for longer stretches of time due to Luke. His excuse about keeping Deacon on the tour as a smart business decision was pure b******t. If Deacon remains on tour with him, it won't be long before those two come to blows.

Will and Layla are definitely not trying to win the marriage of the year award. It was a nice gesture for Will to get her that audition, but it really wasn't going to help. The girl feels trapped, and now she's going to use her confinement to her advantage.

Will seriously needs to think about his future. The truth is going to come out, and if it doesn't come from him or the producer, it will most certainly come from Layla.

Lastly, we have the triangle I didn't want to see happen. I really enjoy when Scarlett and Gunner sing together, but there's no doubt old feelings will get in the way. Just look how quickly she ran out of there when Gunner suggested they start writing together again. All Zoey can do is watch from the sidelines. Actually, she can watch from inside the house now that she's moving in with Gunner. Bad choice girl! Never makes decisions like that out of jealousy or paranoia.

There was a little too much Jeff Fordham in this episode for my liking, but I'm intrigued to see how his next encounter with Sadie Stone will go. He'll need a new female artist at Edgehill if he wants to keep the board happy. If I want more Laura Benanti in my life, I guess I can deal with more Jeff.
