Secrets and Lies Season 1 Episode 4 Review: The Sister

If Ben Crawford thought things were looking up, he was most certainly wrong.
On Secrets and Lies Season 1 Episode 4, Ben frantically tried to search for the killer in order to remove himself from the firing line, but did he go too far?
The Turner family sure have many secrets, and regardless of how they managed to disappear at the end of the hour, I am not ruling them out as suspects.
I never pegged them as suspects at the start of the series, but there were too many scenes tonight that painted them in a negative light. Firstly, the pictures of the boy and the police report. Those were a little too easy for Ben to find.
Secondly, Joseph was fired from his previous job for sexual misconduct.
Leaving it for Tom made sense; it was another step to letting go.

I did think it was all going to be Joseph's fault, but it was refreshing that they were both apparently in on it together. I'm sure many jaws hit the floor across America when we got the news that Vanessa and Joseph are actually siblings. That came from nowhere.
Well, not nowhere. It came from Ben's new boss. Yes, we knew something wasn't quite right with him when he offered a suspected child killer a job. Although this was predictable, it led to a powerful scene in which Ben realized the extent of the can of worms he has opened for the Turners.
They've run away because they're ashamed of what their perfect little neighborhood will think of them being related. It's doubtful it would go down well, but it would take the media frenzy away from the Crawford residence for a few days.
As I said before, the Turners appear to be gone for the meantime, but they will probably pop back up before the conclusion of Secrets and Lies Season 1 and throw us another few twists in the plot.
Cornell continued to be a pain in Ben's ass. She is still investigating him, as evidenced by scouring his cell phone records from the night that Ben can't remember. We now know that Ben attempted to call Jess and leave her a voicemail – a deeply troubling one at that.
Cornell: Mr Crawford.
Ben: I was just starting to miss you.
Cornell: Shame. I'm not here for you.
We can't forget that Cornell also has confirmation that Ben's flashlight was the same model as the one that killed poor Tom. What does all of this mean for Ben? Well, it's not positive and he has to get to the truth soon before it's too late.
This case is building itself and making Ben look even worse in the process. He has pushed everyone away. He was making some progress with Christy, but after the drama he caused at the dinner party, she's not pleased with him.
"The Sister" was another solid episode of this new ABC drama. The storyline is moving along at a good pace and we are getting more and more information every week. We have a long way to go before we find out who really killed Tom, but this is going to be a wild ride until then.
Other tidbits from the episode:
- I'm glad Dave is back in Ben's good books. We got word that he never slept with Natalie and that he has just stuck it out for her. It does make sense considering he has been in her life since she was born. Ben is very paranoid at the moment, but who can blame him?
- It was a bit weird that Ben put the pictures of Malcolm and the police report on to his laptop considering Cornell could walk up at any point and seize it from him.
- Can we have some more Cornell in future episodes? I get that her part of the job is mundane, but seeing her hang around the office and interact with some of her colleagues would be fun.
