Penny Dreadful Season 2 Episode 10 Review: And They Were Enemies

at .  Updated at .

I was expecting a much more shocking finale, but Penny Dreadful Season 2 Episode 10 was excellent nonetheless.

Didn't it seem like there would be more major character deaths? We really only lost Sembene this season, there was no way Evelyn would survive. I was surprised, however, that Mr. Lyle lived to fight another day.

In the end, our little family of misfits scattered to the winds and next season's journey will be bringing them all back together.

Vanessa Defeats Lucifer - Penny Dreadful Season 2 Episode 10

If there was any hope Sembene survived Ethan's attack, the opening moments put that to rest quickly. While it's awful we lost this original cast member, his death not only motivated Ethan to turn himself in, but sent Sir Malcolm back to Africa to bury his friend as well. Sembene's death had repercussions, it served a purpose and wasn't a waste of a great character.

Weren't you a teensy bit disappointed Vanessa faced off against her fetish doll and not Lucifer himself? Sure, the doll was creepy, but after hearing Mr. Lyle talk of the two brothers I really wanted to meet the Devil in the flesh. The finale didn't give us any Dracula either, perhaps next season.

Eva Green is just so damn good, she actually made the scene with the doll work.

Vanessa: And all of this; the witches, the attacks, just to bring me here.
Lucifer: I've missed you Vanessa.
Vanessa: No, no you need me to agree. You can't take my soul. I have to give it.
Lucifer: You must give it freely, and of your own accord.

The scene where Lucifer shows Vanessa what her life could be was brilliant. I don't think we've ever seen Vanessa as happy and with Ethan too. Though it was just a tease, we got a brief chance to see the two on cloud nine. I very much enjoyed that moment.

Then of course, the Verbis Diablo showdown took place. As always, Ms. Green delivered the goods. I'm not big on awards shows, but I hope she is at least recognized for her work with an Emmy nomination.

We knew Hecate was going to make a move against her mother. All she had to do was release Ethan and the "Wolf of God" did the dirty work for her. I will miss Helen McCrory's Evelyn Poole, she was an outstanding villain this season. It was interesting that Ethan spared Vanessa, she definitely is powerful.

Meanwhile, both Sir Malcolm and Victor faced their sins. Does this series have the most unbelievable dialog on television or what?

Caliban: You have the engines of the future all around you.
Lily: The needle. The scalpel. The noose.
Mina: The gun to the temple.
Gladys: Take your razor and slit your throat.
Peter: Join your family.
Mina: The final tombstone on the hill.
Lily: A sip of poison from the amber bottle.
Gladys: A single bullet under the chin.
Caliban: There is no other peace for thee, Frankenstein.
Proteus: Walk into the river. Let it bring you quiet. Enjoy our company.

Again, I was pleased to see Mr. Lyle survived. He's such a colorful character and brings those much needed lighter moments to the series. His line, "Never underestimate the power of a queen with lovely hair my dear" was priceless.

Didn't it seem like the witches were easy to kill? Why didn't someone just shoot them during one of their earlier attacks? I guess it's possible they were weaker once Evelyn was killed. They just didn't seem as threatening in the finale.

When Vanessa absorbed the white scorpion, she was embracing the darkness correct? She also threw her crucifix in the fire. I'm assuming Vanessa turned her back on God completely. Doesn't this make it easier for Lucifer to try again? I have a feeling, the other brother will return next season. I'm ready to learn more about Dracula and a tad let down the character wasn't touched on this year.

It was important to hear Ms. Ives acknowledge she saw Ethan transformed.

Ethan: You know what I am?
Vanessa: Yes, and here I stand. Sir Malcolm is going to Africa. This dreadful house will soon be empty. We can lock the doors and walk away forever.
Ethan: There's no walking away from what I am.
Vanessa: What we both are. I have run from the darkness for so long. Only to find myself in a place darker still. Walk with me.

Unfortunately, when Ethan told her he needed to think, I knew he was turning himself in to Rusk. I predicted early on that Ethan would be returning to America, and I find that storyline very exciting. We will finally meet his father and hopefully get a few flashbacks to how he became the wolf.

Were you surprised Caliban broke out of that cell so easily? I wondered if Lily would come to his rescue, but in the end he took care of those damn Putneys himself. I wonder if it was a wise move to let Lavinia live though? Will she hunt him down?

Poor Victor, between the visions at Evelyn's castle and the confrontation with Lily and Dorian it's no wonder he's gone mad. Have they just set up our immortal power couple as the big bad for Penny Dreadful Season 3? Billie Piper was sensational this season, wasn't she?

Ultimately, all our characters went off in different directions. Next season will be a reboot of sorts, as we will be visiting America and possibly Africa. This will only open up the world of Penny Dreadful even further and it's an exciting prospect. I wish more genre fans watched this show, it truly is something special. I hope it continues for many more seasons.

What did you think of "And They Were Enemies"? Did you find the season finale satisfying? Were you expecting to see Lucifer? Did Ethan make the right choice turning himself in? What are your thoughts on Dorian and Lily? You're up Dreadfuls, please share your thoughts on the finale and the season overall in the comments below. Now, the wait for Season 3 begins.
