Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 7 Review: Why Try to Change Me Now

Change is never easy, but no matter how resistant, the world of medicine requires forward momentum.
A new educational consultant was introduced on Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 7. However, her initial contact with the attendings didn't go smoothly.
Elsewhere in the episode, April started dipping her toe into the dating pool, and Amelia confessed her secret to Owen.
Dr. Eliza Minnick's introduction made waves at the hospital and not everyone is on board with her methods. Granted, I would be pissed too if she was inserting her opinions while I was doing surgery.
Eliza wasn't entirely wrong. Allowing the residents to take a more hands on approach is the best way for them to become more competent doctors at a quicker pace. However, purposely nicking an artery so a resident can fix it just seems reckless, and frankly unethical.
Andrew was able to mend the damage, but a patient's life shouldn't be treated so cavalierly. Or perhaps I'm just clueless and doctors do this all the time at teaching hospitals. If that's the case, and I'm on the table, I don't want to know.
Because medicine is changing, constantly. You're the person who taught me that, and we... everyone here needs to be able to change along with it or get left behind.
Miranda
Grey Sloan Memorial has fallen in the teaching hospital rankings. Reworking the program is a great idea, but there should be more of a compromise as far as the methods go.
Everyone teaches and learns at a different pace. Maggie's mind moves a mile a minute. It takes real effort for her to slow down and explain something.
If, or more accurately when, Eliza takes the job that would mean Richard will no longer run the program. Without it, I don't know how he'd react. The man loves to inspire and mentor.
Richard's empathy and ability to forgive is what has allowed many of these doctors to continue practicing medicine when in the real world they would have gotten into a lot of trouble. Remember when Izzie cut Denny's LVAD wire on Grey's Anatomy Season 2 Episode 25? That act should have gotten her permanently fired. But she was forgiven.
Most of the residents have taken a liking to Eliza, but it will probably take more time for her to win over the attendings. However, if she continues to be unpopular, she'll also be taking Miranda down with her.
You should know, they'll hate you. The staff. It happens everywhere I go. Everyone hates the agent of change. I'm used to it. I'm good at it. But you should be prepared that they'll hate you too for bringing me on.
Eliza
With only a few episodes until the winter break, I can't help but feel like this is all unnecessary drama. Other than Eliza's insane nicking of the artery for a "teaching" moment, she seems like a well-meaning person. The stakes seem very low at this point.
Where's the drama with Alex and the trial? Are we going to learn more about Jo's abusive husband? Where are Meredith's children? That last one was a joke... but not really because seriously, we haven't seen them in forever!
A lot of the narratives floating around the show just seem uninspired or predictable right now. For example, how long before Jackson feels so uncomfortable with April dating that he just has to say something?
April: How do you do this?
Jackson: Well, you're kind of doing it. I mean, you dip your toe. You start by dipping your toe into the water, and then eventually you learn to swim.
April: That's easy for you to say, you probably dipped your toe all over town.
He may have acted all chill with her going out, but that look on his face at the end said it all. At least before that look, we got a glimpse of the friendship part of their relationship we haven't seen in a long time.
I'm all for April getting back out there, but a reunion with Jackson just seems inevitable. It's like we're just killing time until they kiss and makeup.
Then we have Amelia and Owen. Amelia's devastating loss of her child shouldn't be downplayed. However, her resistance to having a child with Owen just seems needlessly cruel.
We already watched this storyline play out when Owen was married to Cristina. Can't the man just be married to a woman that actually wants a baby with him?
Grey's Anatomy isn't above history repeating, but I don't think Amelia's feelings will last. She might have thought she grieved the death of her baby, but there's got to be a lot of emotions she hasn't fully processed yet.
Stray Thoughts and Questions
- So Eliza is totally Arizona's new love interest, right? She got flirty real quick!
- The Meredith-Nathan-Maggie triangle hasn't been featured the last few episodes. Does this mean we're finally moving away from that dreadful storyline? Or are we saving it for the winter finale where Maggie finds out Meredith lied to her?
- Why bring Leah back to the hospital? She hasn't contributed much since she's returned.
- Stephanie's girl-crush on Eliza was a highlight.
