Last Man on Earth Season 3 Episode 9 Review: If You're Happy and You Know It

Wow.

Things got heavy on Last Man on Earth Season 3 Episode 9

Gail is still stuck in the elevator and losing hope, while the group finally decides that Melissa is a danger to herself and others and locks her up.

The Honeymoon - Last Man on Earth

There were a few positive moments, and we'll talk about them below.

But first let me just say (spoiler alert) I truly hope Gail is still alive when the show returns in the spring.

Next, let me say, I hope the T-Rex suit never goes away. It makes Tandy's ridiculousness not seem so bad.

Now, Carol is upset because Gail is still gone, and she thinks she drove her away. Tandy suggests they finally take a honeymoon.

I don't want to hear that there's no magic in this world because you David Copperfielded me, bigly.

Tandy

Once again Tandy killed it in the husband department.

He recreates the campsite from the night they first met, helps Carol catch a fish and delivers some top notch sexy talk about duvets, a California king and sheets with a high thread count.

By the way, is it really possible there are still fish? Or is this supposed to be a miracle?

Carol believes it's the latter and it's enough to bring back the positive woman we're used to.

She and Tandy decide that the fish is a girl and name her Gail.

Fish Gail briefly dies – the way all my fish did when I was a child – by throwing themselves out of the water.

Luckily for Carol's spirit, she ends up being just fine.

The final shot shows them placing her in a kiddie pool back at the commercial building like the proud fish parents we know they are.

The other positive moment involves Lewis. He's still practicing on the flight simulation plane but having a hard time nailing the landing.

Erica is there because the show still doesn't know what to do with her.

Carol Pilbasian: You can't force someone to be your family. Who does that?
Tandy: Hey Carol, the day you forced me to marry you was the best day of my life.

I liked how Lewis freaked out when he messed up the landing again and called the simulation guide a "freakin' dong."

Everyone talks like Tandy now and I kinda love it. That can happen when you hang out together as much as the group has.

The rest of the episode dealt with Melissa's diminishing mental capacity and Gail's increasingly discouraging situation.

I'm not sure I understand where they've taken things with Melissa.

At first, she was a hilariously deadpan, paranoid gun freak. Now she seems to legitimately be suffering from a mental illness. It's sad.

As is the fact that Todd is struggling with what to do. He clearly wants to help her but doesn't know how.

After she ends up dancing on the ledge of the roof, Todd finally agrees with Lewis and Erica that the best place for her is in a safe room with two-way glass so they can keep an eye on her.

Melissa does not agree and lashes out at Todd.

Gail starts the episode determined and strong but ends it, bleeding and hopeless.

Carol Pilbasian: Tandy, you can't bring dead things back to life.
Tandy: You tell that to Jesus Christ... and his buddy, Frankenstein.
Carol: I guess you have a point.

Thinking the roomba is her ticket out, she traps it with Gordon's wig then attaches a post-it note which explains her predicament.

Unfortunately it falls off seconds later and is sucked up by the very device that was supposed to deliver it.

She freaks out and starts shooting, which causes a bullet to ricochet back at her.

Ironically, just as Carol and Tandy are celebrating the resurrection of fish Gail, human Gail is considering ending her own life.

Swimming with a Painting - Last Man on Earth Season 3 Episode 9

She's been stuck in the elevator for days. Nobody has even come in to the building in that time. Now, she's bleeding. Like I said, heavy stuff.

The episode ends with a soft, sad song playing in the background as Carol and Tandy bring home fish Gail.

Melissa screams and bangs on the two-way glass while Todd cries outside, Lewis successfully lands the plane and finally, we hear a gunshot.

I know the show's supposed to be a comedy, but I enjoyed the shift from silly to serious.

Carol Pilbasian: I want to go back to the motorhome and have honeymoon sex with my husband.
Tandy: Let me go wash my balls.
Carol: Keep them dirty.
Tandy: Carol Pilbasian Miller.
Carol: Just kidding, please wash them.

What did you guys think? Did Gail really kill herself?

If so, can you imagine the impact it would have on the group? How will they help Melissa?
