The Magicians Season 2 Episode 13 Review: We Have Brought You Little Cakes

Quentin Coldwater saved the day! He's finally the hero he's always wanted to be!

Just kidding.

Q once again made everything worse for everyone, and possibly destroyed magic forever on The Magicians Season 2 Episode 13 "We Have Brought You Little Cakes."

Table for Two - The Magicians Season 2 Episode 13

To be fair, Quentin, and most of his friends, thought they were doing the right thing when they removed Ember from the equation.

After all, the crazy god had made the decision to destroy Fillory for his amusement, and he murdered his brother when Umber tried to stop him. As amusing as the little cake loving god was, he would have killed everyone in his apocalypse.

But no one considered the consequences of killing a god. Even though the Lady Underground warned Julia of said consequences on The Magicians Season 2 Episode 12.

What do you say? Want to put some pants on and help me save all of magic?

It's too bad no one clued Alice in on the plan before the deadly showdown happened.

I suppose we could argue they left her out of things for her own good. She's struggling with being human again. She's struggling with her feelings for Quentin. He was worried she'd hurt herself.

It still bothered me no one thought to ask the smartest person they know. The one who was literally made of magic until a few days ago. She could have set them straight. Maybe even come up with a better solution.

Being useful as a human might have reminded Alice why life mattered more than Q's bacon analogy did.

Kady also desperately searched for meaning in her life as she tried to save Penny's.

The guilt and shock of what John forced her to do sent Kady back to drugs. It's hard to blame her for falling into old bad habits. The way she sees it, she killed a man for nothing. Reynard is still out there.

And now Kady's made a shady deal of her own with Harriet. Again, I can't and won't fault her for wanting to save Penny. But didn't she learn her lesson after being Marina's errand girl during The Magicians Season 1?

Her lies cost her Penny then. Tricking him into helping Harriet will not end well for Kady and Penny.

Kady: Why can't anything just be fixed?
Penny: Life, I guess.

Margo and Eliot's relationship remained on the rocks as well.

After she literally gave her eye for the cause, I hoped Margo and Eliot would be able to stitch up the holes in their friendship. But it seemed like a lost cause when the two couldn't make their infamous banter work.

That didn't stop them from putting up a united front or clutching one another as a potential apocalypse rained down on their heads. It seemed like maybe they could find a light in this dark period after all.

Except they ended up on opposite sides once again. Eliot wants to bring democracy to Fillory while Margo thinks ruling with a stern fist is the only way to go. Isn't this how they ended up fighting in the first place?

The Fairies Arrive! - The Magicians Season 2 Episode 13

We could debate forever on whether or not the characters learn anything from their mistakes.

Although, it might not matter now that the fairy queen and her army have invaded Fillory. What's going to happen to Margo and Eliot? Will Fen get her baby back? Seriously, why does the queen want the baby in the first place?

It's frustrating we still don't have an answer to that question. I assume it'll be a plot point for next season. But it's a bit of a letdown not to have any idea at this point in time.

Broken Kingdom - The Magicians Season 2 Episode 13

We do know that fairies, talking animals, and every other magical being other than humans were able to keep their magic after Q's costly mistake.

And for some reason, Julia may have kept hers, too.

It's an intriguing twist, especially since Julia was the one pulled out of the Brakebills equation. Is it a sign that all magic will make a comeback? Could it be her connection to the gods?

Also, why wasn't Julia invited back to Brakebills? There weren't going to be anymore time loops. Shouldn't Dean Fogg have offered her the education she'd been deprived?

High King Eliot Returns! - The Magicians Season 2 Episode 13

Penny's condition is another unanswered question we're left with since we didn't see him after the time jump.

I don't believe he's dead. Because that would be cruel and unacceptable. Maybe Harriet managed to save him before magic disappeared.

If so, are he and Kady together? Is he still enslaved to the library? Does the library exist without magic to power it? There are almost too many questions to ponder at this point.

And that's a sign of a strong season finale.

Now, it's your turn! Tell us what you thought of "We Brought You Little Cakes."

Are you surprised Quentin screwed up? How much trouble is Alice in? Why can Julia do magic? Will Eliot and Margo ever be besties again? Penny's alive, right?
