Supergirl Round Table: Is Mon-El Gone for Good?

at .

Rhea is dead, and the Daxamite invaders are gone, but sadly Mon-El was forced to leave as well.

Supergirl Season 2 Episode 22 left us wondering if we'll ever see him again and if we have just been introduced to a new villain.

Below, TV Fanatics Jim Garner, Christine Orlando, Steven Ford, Yana Grebenyuk, and Kathleen Wiedel discuss Mon-El's future, a possible #Sanvers wedding, and their hopes for Supergirl Season 3!

Do you think it's possible for Kara to really have it all?

Jim: Sadly, if Kara got it all (at once) I'm not sure the show would be very interesting to watch. That said, I would love to see her get a little more each season.

Christine: Unfortunately Jim is right. Having Kara struggle to be happy is part of what will make it so satisfying when she finally is… as long as she gets there eventually. But right now, watching her suffer is really difficult.

Steve: I agree with Jim and Christine. Kara having it all wouldn't make for much of a story. Part of the charm of this series is watching Kara grow, make choices, deal with those choices and move on. Perhaps one day she will get everything she wants, but right now it's all part of her journey.

Yana: If Kara could have it all then there wouldn't be a show.

Kathleen: Of course it's possible for Kara to have it all — in the series finale!

What happened to Mon-El? Do you think he'll be back, and if so, how long do you think he will be gone?

Jim: No idea where he went but I suspect it will involve him coming back to Earth and being able to stick around. Or, at least that is my hope.

Christine: No clue where he ended up, but I can’t wait for him to make it back. Mon-El really grew on me. I like his sarcasm and his heart. He and Kara were so darn cute together by season’s end, and it was fun to see them happy and in love, even if it wasn’t for very long.

Steve: I'm not sure where that portal took him, but we will find out what happened. They wouldn't just leave that thread dangling like that.

As far as Mon-El returning to Earth, it would be very difficult now that the atmosphere is poisonous to Daxamites. However, I'm sure this will get resolved somehow. Maybe Mon-El will get a super suit that will help him sustain life on Earth.

Yana: Sadly, I don't think this is the last we will see of him. Kara will continue to miss him and we were left wondering where he went so at some point we will probably find out the answer to that.

Kathleen: Like Christine, I actually enjoyed Mon-El and his character growth over the past season. I suspect, given the way it all ended (him obviously getting sucked through a mysterious portal rather than just simply leaving), that Mon-El will be back at some point, though whether or not it's permanent remains a question.

One thing's certain: mysterious portals are rarely good news.

Saying Goodbye? - Supergirl Season 2 Episode 22

What are your theories on the cliffhanger?

Jim: I'm putting my money on "Reign" the Worldkiller. She's a genetically engineered being that was created on Krypton before it's destruction, so she would fit with what we saw in the finale. Reign is basically a more charismatic Doomsday from the recent DC's New 52 world.

Christine: Since I haven’t read many comic books, I really have no clue, so I’ll have to go with Jim’s theory. For me, the cliffhanger is more about whether or not Mon-El will be able to get back to Earth to be with Kara.

Steve: I'm not familiar with Reign, but that's as good a guess as any for me at this point. The one thing this series is in need of is a great villain; hopefully, whoever it is, fills that role.

Yana: I never read any content outside of the show, so I have no clue. I'm just going to go with Reign like the people above me suggested because why not?

Kathleen: You got me. Jim's theory sounds good at the moment, so let's go with that.

Supergirl Vs. Superman - Supergirl Season 2 Episode 22

What did you think of Alex's impromptu proposal? Do you want to see a Sanvers wedding next season?

Jim: Absolutely. They are sooo adorably cute together! I'd love to see them move forward.

Christine: I never saw it coming, but it was both spontaneous and sweet. A beautiful Sanvers wedding next season would make me very happy.

Steve: I'd be lying if I said that I saw that one coming, and it was a nice surprise. I definitely foresee a wedding in the near future.

Yana: I like the idea behind it, but it was too soon. It's an interesting example of what happens when writers don't know what to do with queer stories, so they rush that happily ever after, and it doesn't translate. I do hope that maybe Maggie says that they need more time, maybe moving in first and then going from there.

Kathleen: I guess I'm not the only person out there that maybe thought the proposal came too soon. They haven't actually known each other all that long, have they?

Yes, they've faced a lot of difficult obstacles together (not least of which being Alex's coming out), but perhaps they keep dating for more than a few months before they decide to tie the knot.

What was your favorite quote or scene from "Nevertheless, She Persisted?"

Jim: By far my favorite scene was when Winn was meeting Superman, and Superman knew his name, Winn mouthed silently "I love you." That had me rolling!

Christine: There were two. First was Winn calling J’onn, Papa Bear; that had me laughing. Second, I cheered when Cat revealed to the audience that she knows Kara is Supergirl. I love Cat, but I don’t know how much longer I could have respected her if she hadn’t figured that out.

Steve: I loved the sweet moment when Clark told Kara that she is much stronger than he is. I love seeing these little moments of them together. Even though the show is "Supergirl," I hope Superman plays more of a role next season.

Yana: "I've never seen Star Wars." I can't when they have Cat reference Star Wars. I hope that never ends.

Kathleen: Oh, Cat, you're awesome. It's just fantastic to finally get confirmation that she's fully aware that Kara's Supergirl.

Cat Moons Over Clark - Supergirl Season 2 Episode 22

What did you think of Supergirl Season 2 overall? How did it compare to Supergirl Season 1?

Jim: I actually liked it a bit more than Supergirl Season 1. They embraced their new home on The CW and had a lot of fun with the show and crossovers.

Christine: Overall, it was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed it even more than Season 1. My only complaint was how James felt separate from the rest of the group but other than that it, was a wonderful season.

Steve: A vast improvement upon Season 1.

Yana: I liked Season 1 a lot more, mostly because of the way Cat disappeared during Season 2, and it no longer felt like Kara's story. She was there, but her relationship with Mon-El eclipsed her story and stories with characters like James.

Kathleen: Supergirl Season 2 had some lumps, to be sure.

James's Guardian storyline — and James himself, to an extent — felt tacked on; they introduced Cadmus as a Big Bad last season, throwing in Jeremiah Danvers for good measure, and all but forgot about them in favor of Rhea and the Daxamites; and the near-total lack of Cat Grant was a tragedy.

However, as Jim mentioned, The CW definitely proved a better fit for Supergirl, not to mention the depth and delicacy with which Alex's coming out and subsequent romance were handled.

What are your hopes for Supergirl Season 3?

Jim: I'd love to see more Cat Grant back and of course the "Sanvers" wedding!

Christine: Definitely more Cat Grant. Also, I’d like to have James as an official part of the team once again. And finally, I hope Mon-El and Kara end up back together. When Mon-El first appeared, I never expected to enjoy him and Kara as a couple as much as I did.

Steve: Good call, Jim, definitely more Cat Grant. As mentioned before, I'd also like to have a great villain introduced and pose a true threat.

Yana: Kara kicking ass, Cat Grant in every single episode, and more James at the forefront.

Kathleen: I'd love more Cat Grant, too, though I'm sadly expecting to have just as much (read: just as little) of her presence next season as in Season 2. That's too bad because she's just that awesome.

I'd also enjoy more team-ups between Kara and Superman; maybe she could fly out to help him save Metropolis once or twice! It might also be interesting to pay a visit to Mars and see what M'gann is up to and give J'onn something to smile about.

Supergirl Season 2 Episode 22 Quotes

Cat: I need you to talk some sense into your friend, James Olsen.
Clark: Jimmy?
Cat: He's been parading around like Darth Vader, punching out villains, and I for one do not want to watch some space invaders slay him with their lifesaver.
Clark: I think you mean light saber.
Kara: Yeah, and Darth Vader actually punches out the good guys.
Cat: Oh, okay, whatever. I've never seen Star Wars.

Kara: I feel like -
Alex: You got punched by Superman?
Kara: Repeatedly.
