Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 15 Review: A Problem of Memory

at .  Updated at .

I thought these relationships couldn't be any more of a roller coaster. But Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 15 proved me wrong.

The emotions and arguments alone were enough to do me in. I'm sad to see romances end, even though I preferred Clary with someone other than Simon. (They're cute together, but she felt passion elsewhere.)

Alec Prepares for Transport - Shadowhunters

First of all, I have to give credit where credit is due: Simon did a great job standing up for himself.

He called out Clary on all her shadiness as well as using him to get over Jace. It was a realization he needed to have that was long overdue.

What's better is that he didn't ignore anything or sweep this under the rug. The Seelie Queen dropped a major truth bomb on Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 14; it was so huge that Simon couldn't ignore it. And I'm ecstatic that he didn't.

Clary: I love you.
Simon: Don't...don't do that.
Clary: Why?
Simon: Because you don't mean it the way I mean it! You never have. Ever since we were kids, I've been in love with you. Every minute of every day. You're the first person I thought of when I woke up. Always have been. If the Seelie Queen had asked that question, "kiss the one you most desire," no one would have even come close. There's something between you and Jace, and you can't deny it.
Clary: I don't know. Maybe...maybe deep down...but Simon, there's nothing like you and me. It's nothing like it.
Simon: But it's enough...enough for me to know. Kissing you, trying to be more than friends...it was a mistake.

Does anyone believe Clary about her feelings for Simon? I think she embellished here.

Sure, she loves him and cares for him. They are best friends and have genuine romantic feelings for each other. However, her attraction to Jace is deeper than her attraction to Simon.

Her reasoning that her feelings/relationship with Simon are different than Jace is irrelevant.

Every relationship and history is different; it doesn't change the fact that she has feelings for Jace. Simon deciding to take some time to think is the best option for him. Simon's and Clary's priorities are clearly not aligned.

Trouble In Paradise - Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 15

Simon going through his emotional-feeding night was an interesting plot for "A Problem of Memory."

We've always seen Simon as a baby vampire, but he's never truly indulged in the darker, seedier side of this world, like with the bleeding den and victim feeding. Getting to explore this new aspect of the vampire world was a welcome contrast to the polished vampire dens we've seen before.

The best part, however, was watching Simon (and Alberto Rosende) bring out the blood sucking fighting skills. Shadowhunters aren't the only ones who can fight! We need more fighting scenes from the other Downworlders.

Luke: Plasma?
[Simon nods]
Luke: Yea. You gotta be careful, Simon.
Simon: I know.
Luke: That stuff is strong.
Simon: I know, it's just a one time thing. I went out with a couple of friends and got a little carried away.
Luke: It's understandable. Clary told me what happened. Listen, I just want you to know, whatever is going on between you two, I'm always here for you. You're the closest thing to a son I've got. Whether you like it or not.
Simon: So, I'm not grounded?
Luke: Don't push your luck.
[Simon gets a headache]
Simon: It feels like Metallica is rehearsing in my head.
Luke: Nothing a little sleep can't fix.

Luke and Simon need to have more scenes together. I love their father/son dynamic.

Whereas Clary and Jocelyn had the mother/daughter scenes, Simon and Luke have a more consistent parental relationship. (I'm going to obviously ignore Valentine and Jace because their relationship was complicated.)

Alberto Rosende and Isaiah Mustafa have great chemistry together. Luke genuinely cares for Simon as a son, and it shows in their moments together.

Though, Luke shouldn't have been quick to think Simon was guilty of killing the Mundane. Sure, Simon was going through something, but he's known him for years. Simon isn't exactly the type to kill someone.

A Shoulder To Cry On - Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 15

My heart went out to Magnus. Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 15 was a rough night for him. The emotions were strong with these flashbacks.

I'm ecstatic that we got character depth and exposition about his past. It explains the people he's lost, and it gives new layers to his character, especially all the way back when they teased about more development for him. Kudos to the writers and Harry Shum, Jr. for pulling this off.

Magnus: I burned him, Alexander. Right where he stood. I murdered my stepfather.
Alec: You were just a boy. You weren't in control of your powers.
Magnus: Yes, actually I was. I never wanted you to see this...terrible, ugly side of me. My past.
Alec: Hey...there is nothing ugly about you.

The Malec moments were equally heartbreaking. Alec giving Magnus support during these painful moments was nice to see; their relationship has been rocky for a significant portion of Shadowhunters Season 2.

Though, I don't want to blame the tension they've been experiencing lately on Magnus reliving his flashbacks. Something doesn't sit right. Could there be more trouble on the horizon for Malec?

A Surprise Guest - Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 15

Did anyone think Sebastian's cousin would find him out? I somewhat hoped it would happen.

Her gut instinct was on the right path, and I was waiting for her to place doubt in Isabelle's head. We never got that moment because the Real Sebastian helped him and shared things about his life. I guess this explains why Fake Sebastian kept Real Sebastian alive for so long.

I do, however, hope we see more of Eileen's character. She seemed interesting and had a cool backstory.

Sebastian: Look, I'm not proud of it. But if anyone should understand, it should be you.
Eileen: Why is that?
Sebastian: You know that summer that I came to Alicante and you were secretly seeing that girl with the dimples?
Eileen: Caroline.
Sebastian: Yea, you kept it such a secret. Everyone thought you hadn't found the right boy.
Eileen: They still think that. Unless you blabbed?
Sebastian: I would never do that. I gave my word. It's just you know how it feels to have everyone in the world see you one way but actually think the exact opposite. You know I actually like taking risks. I'm sure the yin fen was a mistake, but it led me to what I believe is my destiny: Being here.

I'm going to be blunt here, but Real Sebastian made a really stupid move. It was a facepalm, shaking my head-type of move.

I couldn't believe he got himself killed after FINALLY escaping the room. And instead of getting help anywhere, he took his sweet time walking to the New York Institute. (I quite literally screamed at the TV over this.)

He should've known better. He was held captive, and his doppelganger was impersonating him. Did he not expect the enemy to find him?

And why didn't he shut the door behind him when he escaped?!

The Web Unravels - Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 15

Well, this confirms it: the Fake Sebastian is Jonathan Morgenstern. My theory was right. And the book fans can pat themselves on the back for knowing this one.

I'm happy that it explains a lot about Sebastian's character and why he has been acting so weird.

We knew he was a villain, but now it clarifies that he's pure evil. Sebastian/Jonathan and Valentine could cause a lot of trouble together. I'm worried about what they might have planned next.

Though, I'm also curious/worried about casting. I like Will Tudor, and he's doing a great job as Sebastian/Jonathan. It would be a shame to see him go if they switch his identity.

But from the looks of Jonathan's powers, he could transform himself into a new look if need be. (Shamelessly crossing my fingers here we get the best of both worlds.)

Holding Down The Fort - Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 15

What did you think of "A Problem of Memory"? How long will Sebastian's secret be kept a secret? Should Simon and Clary get back together? What could be Valentine and Sebastian's next move?
