Owl demon or not, Jace continued his downward spiral on Shadowhunters Season 3 Episode 4. He's been having a hard time lately with all of the nightmares and visions; they keep getting worse.

Could he be losing his mind?

Lilith has her claws into Jace's mind, and no one knows what's going on with the tough shadowhunter. He's trapped doing the bidding of the villain, and he doesn't even know it!

Did everyone breathe a sigh of relief when it was revealed Jace was only in a hypnotic trance? Talk about a glimmer of hope!

After the owl demon turned out to be the blonde shadowhunter, there was a fear he had gone to the dark side. The nightmares and sharp mood swings weren't a good sign to argue against the theory. For all intents and purposes, he seemed like a goner.

Now knowing that Lilith merely had him in a trance, the revelation proved that there was still good left in him. And it explained all the looming questions we had about Jace, like why he was always so tired/paranoid (Lilith), why he saw Jonathan (Lilith!), and why he was having nightmares about killing Clary (all Lilith!).

Turning him into her forced accomplice gave her the retribution she so desired, and having a strong fighter on her side made it easier to corrupt the people of New York City. She's already 30% done with her ritual to bring Jonathan back, so it seems like he's doing his job.

Lilith: For such an ugly and despicable species, they do make beautiful things. Where’s the girl?
Jace: Right as I finished, the Shadowhunters...they fought me off, took her with them.
[The flowers wilt as she gets angry]
Lilith: How could you let that happen?
Jace: I was overpowered.
[She slaps him]
Lilith: If they identify her possession, they will be able to track me. They will try and stop Jonathan’s resurrection before it even begins.
Jace: I will not let that happen.
Lilith: No, you won’t. Nothing will stop me from bringing my son back.

We ventured away from supernatural drama for a bit to explore the theme of hereditary mental illness. In particular, the focus was on Jace and the potential that he was suffering from the same fate as his late mother.

Beyond all the vampires, werewolves and shadowhunters we interact with, this storyline grounded "Thy Soul Instructed" with a serious human plot that couldn't be avoided with magic.

For Jace's character development, it was imperative for him to learn about his birth parents and discuss his mother's mental health. He didn't know much about them, except that they were former Circle members who died and that his mother had an ongoing issue.

This brought him closer to his deceased parents and added to the conversation he had been trying to avoid for so long.

Jace needed to figure out if he had been showing the same symptoms or if there was indeed a magical reason for all the Clary/Jonathan dreams. Everyone was worried about him, and if he didn't look into it, things could've gone worse by merely ignoring it.

When Jace had been sent to the Institute to get Morgan, the obvious conclusion seemed like he was going to kill her. He broke in, conducted his spell, and sent her flying against the wall. Morgan looked like she had died.

This entire mystery with the demon possessions is a curious one to follow.

Lilith doesn't just possess these Mundanes, she turns them into demons to get their blood. There has to be a reason why the demons are so fixated on killing someone close to them. And why the genetic makeup of the Mundanes have to be turned into demons for the ritual spell to work.

We're four episodes into Shadowhunters Season 3, and the Lilith mystery is living up to its initial hype of being dramatic, intense, and addictive. We've moved past the details we expected, like her pursuit of bringing Jonathan back, to being focused on completing the demonic ritual.

We'll need to see if she turns anyone else. (My money is on Dr. Charlie!)

Heidi's actions felt like a kid having their first year at college. (Minus the killing and being a vampire, of course.)

She was free, had no restrictions, and got to explore the city with her new sense of purpose. She was making up for lost time without Raphael keeping her back.

You couldn't help but feel bad for the blood drive attendant. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time; she wanted that blood, and she was going to get it.

In a way, it's interesting to note that the blood drive attendant was the first vampire victim we've had since Heidi was killed by a vampire. The cycle of transformation kept going with this series of events.

As viewers, we knew that the attendant was dead; there's no way Heidi would've spared him. We could only watch as Izzy and Clary failed miserably in their search for the body, but her turning him into a vampire distraction was a shocking twist.

Was this only a one-time thing or could she be building a small nest?

Heidi's crush (or more like obsession) with Simon was a strange development.

Based on what we know about the characters, they only knew each other for a little bit before she was murdered. Beyond a bit of flirting, nothing else seemed to be between the two.

The way she walked through his apartment, basked in his home, and creepily smelled his clothing made it seem like the character wanted to be with him. She has a thing for the vampire guitarist. And since they're both vampires, there's a chance she could be hoping things could restart again.

A love triangle between Simon, Heidi, and Maia might happen, especially since Heidi seems like the type who won't give up without a fight. Though, there's no way Simon would leave Maia to be with Heidi; the couple looks to be pretty strong.

Heidi: When you told me that story about how you stole my body from the hospital morgue to resurrect me, first time in my life I felt so lucky. And then I realized that you just brought me back here to be your guinea pig.
Raphael: I’m sorry. I know it was wrong.
Heidi: It’s okay. As my step-mom always said, “Even scum get their day in the sun.”
[She giggles as the sun starts appearing]

The revenge rooftop scene gave us all the answers we needed to know about Raphael's secret. And, as much as we have a love/hate relationship with the character, he deserved the trouble that headed his way.

Wanting to find out the truth about becoming a Daylighter so that he and others could walk in the sun was a noble goal. However, turning someone, kidnapping them and then torturing them jumped over the line. He was abusing Heidi in his life-consuming goal with no guarantee that he'd find the truth.

Why didn't they just ask someone from the group to be the experiment? Was it so necessary for it to be a newbie vampire?

He's lucky that Clary and Isabelle saved him in time because he would've burned in the sun, and that Isabelle showed him mercy by letting him leave the city.

The transformation and torture of Heidi would've been a crime for which the Clave would stake him. Let alone the fact that Heidi would still come back to finish the job and turn him into dust.

Hopefully, this isn't the last we'll see of Raphael.

He and Izzy have such great chemistry together. We've talked in the past about the fire and electricity between Emeraude Tobia and David Castro (who play Izzy and Raphael, respectively); the actors play well off each other, and their characters have a connection.

And we learned a lot about this during Clary and Izzy's conversation.

Their chat was the first time we got a real sense into how these two interacted with each other beyond the addiction. The pair connected on a new romantic and personal level, which gave them all the reason to be together. However, the reality of the situation was also why their pairing didn't work.

Even though this ship shouldn't be together for obvious reasons, we can always have some hope for future scenes if he does come back.

Isabelle: All the guys I’ve been with, sex was always a big part of it. With Raphael, it was about everything but that. He made me feel like I wanted so much more.
Clary: So why end it?
Isabelle: We thought we couldn’t be together without being tempted by our old habits. But, Raphael and I, there’s something about us that just fits.

Luke didn't abandon Simon after all. He treated Simon like a son; he never would've kicked him out of the boatyard unless he was stuck between a rock and a hard place. You could tell that he was upset having to do it.

Though, Maia had a major point in her argument to Luke.

The other wolves in the pack had no stake in her relationship with Simon. She was the one dating him, so they shouldn't force him out of his apartment because they didn't want a vampire around. Even though Luke was trying to be diplomatic in his explanation, it was alarming to see him brush it off due to troubles in the past.

Simon's presence in the boatyard would've ruffled some feathers, but he could've openly helped him find a place. He didn't need to do it in secret with the help of Kyle and concocting an elaborate coincidence.

Maia: It’s none of their business if I want to date a vampire. You tell them to leave Simon alone.
Luke: And you’ve got some magic fairy dust that I can sprinkle around and make that happen? We’re talking about vampires and werewolves, thousands of years of hate. It’s not pretty, but that’s just the way it is.
Maia: I can’t believe those words just came out of your mouth. Are you seriously telling me there’s no use in changing bigoted behavior?
Luke: I’m all for change, but the kind of change you’re talking about takes time and open minds. And I’m short of both.
Maia: So, you’re abandoning Simon?
[He stops and turns around]
Luke: I don’t abandon people I care about. You know that better than anyone.
Maia: Not anymore. But, hey, you’re the alpha. Do what you think is best.

Speaking of the plan, should we trust Simon's new roommate?

From the few bits of footage we saw of him, he seemed like a chill guy and a good roommate. Plus, his apartment looked gorgeous! Whenever you get a rent-controlled place with lots of space, you don't turn that opportunity down.

Still, that's not to say there won't be shenanigans going on. This is Shadowhunters after all; people do have secret motives. And when he brought up the Praetor Lupus, Simon got forced into a complicated web by Luke without his knowledge.

Fans of the book series should be well aware of Jordan Kyle. But, the TV adaptation does change things around slightly (looking at you, Aldertree), so we could see a new side to the character if the plot changes things up from the book series.

We'll have to keep our eyes open to the apartment storyline and wait to learn more about him.

Lilith has to be planning something terrible against Clary.

Hypnotized Jace gave her all the reasons why his plan failed to bring Morgan back, and it had to do with Clary. Lilith can't risk the only person who could break him free from her grasp still be alive.

Whenever the villain gets close to someone in the main group under false pretenses, a few things could happen: The villain would hurt the friend, the friend would be tipped off to the villain, or the friend would regret what they helped to cause.

My gut feeling is that the last two instances will happen. The group could be tipped off to Lilith and Magnus's magic will have nearly hurt Clary.

Magnus is one of the most potent Warlocks in Brooklyn with a long list of spells and potions at his disposal! Whatever he gives to Lilith will no doubt cause a lot of danger for Clary.
