Star Trek: Discovery Fires Showrunners

There has been more changes behind the scenes for Star Trek: Discovery.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the hit drama series is replacing showrunners, Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts.

Co-creator and executive producer Alex Kurtzman will assume showrunning duties for the rest of Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 and beyond.

“We’ve made some producer changes at Star Trek: Discovery,” producers CBS Television Studios said in a statement.

“The series continues under the creative vision and leadership of executive producer and co-creator Alex Kurtzman."

"Discovery remains on course for Season 2 in 2019 with new and continuing stories that build on its successful premiere season.”

The news is not said to be related to creative differences. Instead, the report states that the budget for the premiere of Season 2 catapulted, and in turn, it will be recouped by later episodes in the season having a lower budget.

Much worse, there are even allegations that Beg and Harberts were abusive behind the scenes.

Fans were shocked in October 2016 when then showrunner Bryan Fuller exited the show months before it even hit the air.

“We are extremely happy with the creative direction of Star Trek: Discovery and the strong foundation that Bryan Fuller has helped us create for the series,” CBS TV said via statement at the time of his exit.

“Due to Bryan’s other projects, he is no longer able to oversee the day-to-day of Star Trek, but he remains an executive producer, and will continue to map out the story arc for the entire season."

"Alex Kurtzman, co-creator and executive producer, along with Fuller’s producing partners and longtime collaborators, Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, will also continue to oversee the show with the existing writing and producing team."

"Bryan is a brilliant creative talent and passionate Star Trek fan, who has helped us chart an exciting course for the series. We are all committed to seeing this vision through and look forward to premiering Star Trek: Discovery this coming May 2017.”

The series was a hit when it debuted and was certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with 82%.

Despite the budget for the series being huge, a lucrative Netflix distribution deal in territories outside the U.S. is said to be netting CBS All Access a lot of money.
