One Day at a Time: Will CBS All Access Save the Comedy Series?

it's been just under a month since Netflix canceled One Day at a Time, but the fight is still on to save the popular series from demise.

Vulture is reporting that CBS All Access is interested in saving the Justina Machado-fronted comedy series, but there's a big hurdle that stands in the way of an official pickup:

Netflix has the opportunity to kill the deal before it becomes official because there's a stipulation in the streamer's agreement with Sony that allows the series to move to another streaming network within two years after the cancellation.

While it wouldn't be the end of the world to wait two years for more episodes, it will be difficult to assemble the cast and crew again that long after the show has been canceled.

People move on to new projects, and it's a big ask to ask everyone to be available when such a deal comes to light, but Vulture notes that Netflix could still give the deal the green light.

One Day at a Time executive Producer Norman Lear turned to Netflix to try and find out if the streamer would come to a deal and allow the series to move to the competing streaming service, but as of now, it sounds like it's not going to happen.

The report also states that Netflix has not made a decision, but there's still hope even if the streamer opts to kill the deal.

Netflix's power to shut down a deal for two years only extends to competing streaming networks, so it's possible that the series could move to one of the broadcast networks or even a cable network.

One Day at a Time has been one of the streamer's most talked about series since it debuted back in 2017. The most recent third season amassed an approval rating of 100% percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The viewers that watch the series love it, but it's difficult to really gauge how popular it is when Netflix does not normally release viewing statistics.

"We’ve made the very difficult decision not to renew One Day At A Time for a fourth season," a statement from Netflix reads at the time of the cancellation.

"The choice did not come easily — we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season."

“It’s been a great honor to work with the legendary Norman Lear,” Netflix COO Ted Sarandos said in a statement.

“I’ve personally spoken with Norman, and co-creators Gloria Calderón Kellett and Mike Royce, to express my gratitude to them, all the writers, the dedicated crew and the cast including the brilliant Justina Machado and dazzling Rita Moreno for creating a series with such humor, heart and humanity."

"While it’s disappointing that more viewers didn’t discover One Day at a Time, I believe the series will stand the test of time.”
