Tom Cruise made a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con to promote Top Gun: Maverick.

If you really think it's a surprise, then you haven't understood the significance of Top Gun on pop culture or Cruise's career.

Cruise showed up at the end of the Terminator: Dark Fate panel noting "to me, Top Gun is about competition."

What we know of Cruise and his dedication to movies certainly bears that out.

Do We Really Need Another Gossip Girl Reboot?

Cruise is known to do much of the stunt work for his films himself, so it will be interesting to discover his accomplishment for Top Gun: Maverick when he makes the inevitable late-night rounds promoting the film.

The trailer itself is full of action, utilizing very few words to make its point.

If you are a fan of the original (and you aren't only if you never bothered to watch), then you are familiar with Maverick and his cowboy approach to piloting.

After an introduction at Comic-Con by Conan O'Brien, Cruise said, "For 34 years you guys have been very patient with me, and I felt it was my responsibility for me to deliver for you."

That's a long time to be still playing the hero, but even with the controversy that often surrounds the actor, he chooses his roles carefully and to great effect.

That's not to say that the only person featured in the film is Cruise. Far from it.

For those hoping to see more hot bods on the volleyball court this time around, it seems Top Gun: Maverick won't disappoint.

That's Glenn Powell up there looking a cut above the average guy on the street.

21 Amazing Adventure Seekers

Miles Teller plays Goose's son and Maverick's protege. RIP Goose, but we love the nod to the tragic events of the original movie and Maverick's best buddy.

Other cast members include Val Kilmer returning as Iceman, and Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connolly, Ed Harris, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell, Jay Ellis, Bashir Salahuddin, Danny Ramirez, and Monica Barbaro.

Will you be flying toward your local theater to get a glimpse of Top Gun 34 years after the original?

Does it seem plausible that a reckless soul like Maverick making it as long as he did?

If you've never seen it, find the original Top Gun and watch so you'll be all set for the 2020 debut of Top Gun: Maverick.

Oh, and make sure you're using the best speakers available to get the full effect of the birds in action!
