Either I can foresee the future or my requests have been answered.
Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 Episode 3 uses Grandma Huang as more than a funny one-liner.
Originally the title of the show led me to believe it was going to be centered on Emergy, Evan, and Eddie, but instead, it's about Grandma Huang and her other boys, Louis and Gene.
Grandma Huang finds inspiration to retire after seeing Marvin celebrate a happy transition into retirement. Everyone begins to question what she wants to retire from.
I could see Grandma Huang having a side hustle. Something so badass we'd never expect it. Her wheelchair is just a disguise. We still need an episode surrounding her past.
With Marvin's newfound retirement, Evan realizes Marvin has the power to spill all his originally held doctor-patient confidentiality secrets.
Was I the only one confused by the Reggie secret? Maybe it was a reference to a previous episode?
The boys set off on a wild goose chase, searching for any sources to spill the beans on Marvin. They need to find leverage to keep Marvin's mouth shut.
Instead, they decide to go straight to the man himself. Marvin shares his big secret about Angela.
Angela being his boat that he's had for a while, but only revealed to Honey recently, telling her it was his newest retirement gift to himself.
The boys secret is safe from their parents, and certainly from the audience.
I want to know what they're talking about! If you know, please leave the answer in the comments. Please and thank you!
Grandma Huang hands Louis a laundry list of gifts she'd like to receive for her retirement, but instead, Louis decides her list is a fake-out and what she really wants is a party.
When he throws her a party, and she realizes he hasn't gotten her any of the gifts she's upset and tells him off.
Louis, you know you shouldn't undress when you're upset.Jessica
After feeling under-appreciated, he decides to invite his brother Hurricane Gene home to reframe her original disappointment into realizing he does everything for her.
This revelation is brought on by none other than Jessica! Jessica's dropping the knowledge this time, and helps him realize that appreciation is all about perspective.
Take Evan and Eddie, for example. Jessica never fails to remind us and everyone else that Evan is her prized son.
Even when Evan does wrong, he will never do anything as bad as Eddie.
To Louis's dismay, Hurricane Gene has danced with death and has seen the light and matured into Steady Gene.
They're all about maturation and nicknames on the show apprently, Messy Jessie and now Steady Gene.
Grandma Huang persuades Steady Gene into purchasing her most desired retirement present, the hot tub.
Gene does it in secret until Louis finds it in the garage.
After previously thinking Gene had changed their mother's perspective and she had actually become grateful, he realizes Gene bought her off.
The woman who thinks Lex Luther is the superhero of Superman?Jessica
Louis has yet to learn that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
Poor Louis is wrestling with feeling unappreciated and overwhelmed with taking care of his mother.
Until Jessica comes in with the wise words of wisdom again.
Jessica's killing it! She teaches a lesson we can all benefit from.
It is funny to hear her talk about complaining and martyrdom, when she's the epitome of both.
Change is not something to be feared, but to be embraced.
Most times it's the change that receives praise, and not the steady grounded ideas.
You see Marvin's stupid new flagpole in his yard? That's you. Steady pole in the ground. Everyone else around you is like the flag, changing direction as the wind shifts. But not you, you're keeping everything in place. But the pole gets no attention. We salute the flag, but not the pole.Jessica
Louis refocuses his narrative and finds acceptance in his brother's changed ways.
We're not always in control of the reasons for people changing, but as they change we should just be there to support and embrace it.
This episode advanced Jessica's characterization and instead of putting her in the front seat of the episode, they put her in the background.
We're usually only exposed to the trials and tribulations of Jessica and Connie's sisterly disputes, so it was a nice change to get to see Louis and his family dynamic.
Louis received more depth than we're typically shown.
While he's generally used as the side character to promote Jessica's wellbeing, we received a lot more growth from him.
Additional Side Notes:
All the redhead jokes Trent makes are gold. Can anyone else attest to a redhead looking like a lobster when placed in a hot tub?
Honestly, I forgot Marvin was a dentist, and I thought they were celebrating his unknown retirement.
Just when we think Jessica's stepping out of character, she reels it back in with her added narcissistic comments.
- Did anyone else receive Freak Friday vibes when Grandma Huang said, "The answers you seek are on the list."?
- Emery and Eddie always tease Evan for being the baby, but the hand fighting was much more childish.
