Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 9 Review: Ka lā'au kumu 'ole o Kahilikolo" is Hawaiian for (The Trunkless Tree of Kahilikolo)

at .

There are families then there are families.

That seemed to be the Thanksgiving message of Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 9.

First, there was the Parks family (and their family tree) featured in the case of the week, one of two storylines that threatened to get in the way of Five-0 celebrating the holiday.

Thanksgiving - Hawaii Five-0

How do you steal a massive koa tree?

Well, in this case, not too well.

Holiday Talk - Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 9

Didn't the gardener, the supposed brains behind the operation, realize that the family would be gathering for the holiday, which means there would have to be some staff around? The place was hardly deserted.

Not only did the heist gain George Parks' attention but also his son Preston stumbled into the robbery in progress.

Also, don't rich people have security sufficient to keep robbers from coming onto their property with the equipment necessary to haul off a giant tree?

So what was George doing trying to defend his treasure with his own gun? Certainly, he could have just called the police and gotten them there in the time it took to harvest the koa.

A well-known philanthropist such as George would have gotten special attention from HPD.

Waiting Patiently - Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 9

It was one of those head-scratching setups for which Hawaii Five-0 has become known.

And, hey, you have to love a shady if temporary suspect nicknamed Lolo Joe.

Things picked up from there after Grover and Quinn found the robbery crew gunned down in a warehouse.

Talk about the punishment not fitting the crime. Sure, koa trees are revered in Hawaii, and that was a big un, but seriously ...

Whoever killed the robbers left all the koa wood but for one section, which included a hollow.

Which quickly begged the question of which of the Parks had hidden something inside of it.

Someone had a secret. That was certainly more intriguing than a rich guy getting murdered for his big tree.

Even better, one piece of wood at the warehouse had an earring from a long-missing Jane Doe embedded in it.

So could that hollow be the hiding place for body parts?

That meant the obvious suspects were the three Parks children.

Unexpected Houseguest - Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 9

Preston cracked in no time when Grover and Quinn whipped out the fake skull, spilling about what he had done all those years before.

But it was too early for that case to have been solved and frankly Preston wasn't smart enough to have handled the coverup and the killing of the robbery crew all by himself.

He was willing to admit to the murder even though he ultimately hadn't committed it to protect the siblings whom he thought had covered up the crime for him.

But in the end, he had been blaming himself for nothing, as his sister had murdered Lena to protect the family name and his brother had slaughtered the robbery crew for much the same reason.

So let's file the Parks under "family, bad."

In a Good Place - Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 9

The other case was an example of "family, good."

Just as the investigation of the Parks murder was beginning, Junior got a call from his mother that their house had been broken into and robbed.

Once Junior discovered that his father's cigar box had been stolen from its secret hiding place, he knew who the culprit was.

That's was his friend Owen, whom the Reigns had taken in to protect him from his addict mother.

Sadly, Owen had ended up going down the same path as his mother, becoming an addict himself and stealing to get his next fix.

Recovered Property - Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 9

It took Junior and Tani no time to locate Owen, in part thanks to Tani's brother Koa (cute having Koa mentioned in the same episode as a koa tree was stolen).

After Owen told Junior where he could recover the stolen items, Junior took the high road.

Despite the pain Owen had caused his family, Junior offered to get Owen into rehab rather than arresting him for the theft.

Recovering the cigar box, Junior found letters from Afghanistan, but not from him. Despite his father objecting to Junior enlisting, he still kept track of him with those letters from Junior's C.O.

Junior's father finally came around to his way of thinking, forgiving Maya's killer and the family seems to be healing.

Thanksgiving Camaraderie - Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 9

Junior did the right thing in thanking Tani for supporting him while he dealt with all his family drama over the past year.

Now maybe there will be a chance for him and Tani to get their romantic relationship off the ground. At least I think that's what he was trying to spit out.

Finally, there was the Five-0 work family.

Steve now has another houseguest in the form of Danny, who is there to keep an eye on him.

Junior had similar concerns, offering to call off the Thanksgiving celebration if it would be too much for McGarrett.

Carrying the Main Course - Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 9

It was hilarious to see Eddie give Danny the stink-eye when Danny wanted to move Eddie off the couch so Junior could sleep there.

We also found out that things aren't going well between Danny and Rachel. So that's why we haven't seen her yet this season.

As Steve and company will soon find out, Danny isn't easy to live with.

Is it possible that Quinn and Danny might become an item instead?

That Thanksgiving with his work family was just what Steve needed.

Did Junior do the right thing?

What did you think about the case of the week?

Did you enjoy the team's Thanksgiving?
