Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 Episode 6 Review: The Me Nobody Knows

Critic's Rating: 4.2 / 5.0

The best thing about Grey's Anatomy these days is the focus on Meredith Grey.

For a while there, the story become less and less about her, but now, she's back at the center.

On Grey's Anatomy Season 12 Episode 6, Meredith tries to rise above as she allows Penny to be on her service, but then can't help but treat her terribly rather than teach her.

A Talk Between Sisters - Grey's Anatomy Season 12 Episode 6

Meredith can only rise above so far when it comes to being reminded of Derek's death, and working with the doctor who let him die. It's understandable.

Of course, both Meredith and Amelia should be upset at having to work with her. It's the kind of unique circumstance that we imagine would only happen in the television world, and it's one that seems completely unbearable.

It also doesn't necessarily seem realistic. Meredith learns that Richard had seen Penny's file, therefore knowing of her losses, before she was hired. Even though his explanation is a good one, particularly because it brings things full circle and reminds us Meredith's beginning at the hospital, I have a tough time buying that they would hire her knowing that Derek had been her patient.

That's not necessarily because a lot of people would resent her and find her difficult to work with, but imagine the work environment she'd be stepping into. Oh, wait. You don't have to. We all saw it, and it was nasty. At least at first.

Richard's advice to Meredith sinks in, though, and it seems like she's going to actually rise above from here on out. Richard and Bailey have both been mentors to Meredith more this season than we've seen in a long time, and it's another reason why Grey's Anatomy Season 12 is so much more enjoyable to watch.

While all of that's going on, Jackson and April still have their issues. The time, though, we see those issues in a different light. We see them as they work to save a young boy's hands.

April lied to get the boy in there, but it was because she knew Jackson would be able to help him. She had faith in him. Of course, she takes it personally when Jackson says he can't do anything except amputate, but when he changes his mind and decides there's a way to try to save the boy's hands, it becomes symbolic for their relationship.

More importantly, though, is the young boy's reaction to having his hands when he wakes up from surgery. Those moments, the ones that bring on the happy tears, are what really work for this show. The boy is also from The Middle East, which means that we're also addressing the kind of life the boy has had. It's been brutal, yet the boy is respectful and has such a positive attitude. To provide him some semblance of hope with this surgery is beautiful.

Other Thoughts:

  • This episode's random and awkward cover song? Britney Spears' "Oops! …  I Did It Again." I don't think I need to say anything else about that.
  • I'm interested to know more about Owen's issue with April's friend. I'm also guessing this guy is going to be coming back.
