The dictionary defines grief as keen mental suffering or distress over affliction or loss; sharp sorrow; painful regret. As surgeons, as scientists, we're taught to learn from and rely on books, on definitions, on definitives. But in life, strict definitions rarely apply. In life, grief can look like a lot of things that bear little resemblance to sharp sorrow.
Meredith: I can't get over the fact that you know what onesie-decorating is.
Mark: I've been boning up. That's what you do for the people you love.

Meredith: It seems like you came home because you thought you were in trouble.
Derek: I came home because we're on trouble. I came home to work on us. I came home.

Meredith: Well, I don't know how she would have felt about me getting married.

Meredith: Oh, well she probably would have said with all the mistakes I've made I'm lucky the patients alive.
Richard: That's right, but, I also know she would have been thrilled. She wouldn't have been able to tell you, but, she would have been.
Meredith: Thank you Sir.
[narrating] We have to constantly come up with new ways to fix ourselves. So we change, we adapt. We create new versions of ourselves. We just need to be sure that this one is an improvement over the last.
Lexie: Oh god, you're gonna tell Derek and then Derek's gonna tell Mark that I'm a whore.
Meredith: No! I'm not going to say anything, and neither are you.

Maddie's Mom: We're leaving. For good. we're leaving. And as i understand it you'll be too weak to follow us any time soon, so I'm pretty sure you won't be able to follow us later. So, we're here to say goodbye. Maddie say goodbye to daddy. This is the last you'll be seeing of him.
Maddie: Bye daddy, feel better. Bye Dr. Grey.
Meredith: Bye Maddie.
Meredith: Hey there, I know this must be scary. But, if it's any consolation you're a hardcore hero. You saved that woman's life. (john doe grabs Mer's hand and tries to write something) Is he trying to write something? (tries to give him a pen) Can you hold this? (he's too weak. Mer grabs his hand) Ok, you'll be stronger tomorrow.
Owen: Call OR 1, tell them to get ready for him.
Meredith: Ok.
Cristina: People like to say what I did was heroic, but I wasn't. It was just a thing that I had to do. I think people like to have a hero and it makes them feel better to think that they're in the middle of that horror that there's someone special working medical miracles. I don't have super special medical powers.
Meredith: Cristina is a hero, especially to me. The truth is most surgeons could not have done what she did that day.
