Chicago Med Season 7 Episode 1 takes a look at inequities in the medical system.

New doctors Scott and Hammer meet a little girl with sickle cell anemia. She has had a stroke, something which happened because she didn't get proper screenings or treatment before now. The mother blames herself but Hammer and Scott reassure her it's the prior doctor's fault. Privately, they discuss how kids with sickle cell -- who are mostly Black -- don't get the right treatment as often as kids with cystic fibrosis, who are mostly White.

Meanwhile, Goodwin rehires Halstead on one condition: he must spy on a fellow doctor, Matt Cooper, who Goodwin suspects is prescribing a heart monitoring machine unnecessarily to get kickbacks. The hospital bills Medicare a high rate for the use of the machine, so this may also be fraud. She wants answers and she wants Will to get them.

Elsewhere, Archer and Charles get into it again when a patient won't consent to emergency surgery unless her identical twin, who does not need surgery, gets it too. Charles insists the patient has the right to refuse care, which upsets Archer.

Chicago Med Season 7 Episode 1 Quotes

Archer: Ethan's physical therapy is going well?
Charles: That's why I hear.
Archer: That's good. And he doesn't hold a grudge?
Charles: A grudge?
Archer: If the shooter, what's his name... Neal? had been put on a psych hold, he wouldn't have shot Ethan. Ever think about that?
Charles: No, never. But you know what has crossed my mind? If any of this would have happened if you hadn't taken his appendix out against his will.

Natalie: Well, I guess that's everything. You okay?
Will: Yeah.
Natalie: You'd better go back.
Will: You'd better keep in touch. Otherwise I'll come find you.
