Recap

At a art show, a dealer tells an artist she has sold two of her paintings for 50K. The girl is shocked. Soon after, a guy asks to buy another piece for 6K

Suddenly, we see a gunshot and we jump to the crime scene where a guy tries to break through the crime tape and when Cosgrove tells him that he can't contaminate the crime scene the crowd starts demanding to defund the police.

A uniform says that the dealer has disappeared. There is blood on the walls and a piece of someone's brain.

Forensics show the shooter used a homemade ghost gun which cannot be traced. Companies use 3D printers, which are super expensive pieces of equipment.

Cosgrove offers everyone cake. He has just turned 50. Back to the case. The security camera stopped working at 10:07 PM. Last photo shows Madison with two guys and a radio. The camera was jammed -- this was planned.  She also got an email saying to pay up or it won't end well. The sender works for a VR company.

Bret explains that Madison owes him 500 grand for a phony NFT. The cops don't know what that is. Anyway Bret says he went to the gallery to try to get his money back. He has recorded the conversation. Madison promised to give him the money but told him to leave. It happened at 9:49 PM, before the murder.

Security footage shows an SUV showing up at 10:02 PM and the guy waited two hours before he went in. His face is covered in plastic. He leaves with a big crate.

At a land fill the cops find Madison's purse and ID. They also find a body in a crate but it is NOT Madison -- it is Sarah, the girl who couldn't believe anyone was buying her art.

Sarah matches the forensics found at the scene but Madison's blood was also at the scene. The cops have to contact families at this point.

Shaw and Cosgrove talk to Madison's brother and inform him that she disappeared over 24 hours ago so he has to be prepared for the worst. He has no idea who might want to hurt her and says Madison and Sarah were good friends. They were both excited at the show. He left around 11 PM -- he should have stayed and made sure his sister was okay. Cosgrove says you could have been killed too. The brother says you know she's my sister, right? He needs to find out what happened to her.

Dixon talks to Sarah's parents who didn't like to pry into their daughter's personal life. The mother says Sarah had a problem with the landlord. Once when she was on the phone, the landlord opened the door with a passkey and claimed to need to fix something.

The landlord says Sarah was a stellar tenant. However, Sarah filed a complaint. The cops discover he's spying on young women in their apartments and arrest him.

During interrogation, the landlord says some tenants were illegally subletting so he spied on tenants just in case. Cosgrove says if Sarah found out this is a strong motive for murder. The landlord says he was home except for when he went to buy groceries around the corner.

Survelliance video shows this is true but a man banged on Sarah's door and owns a black SUV. The car belongs to a hedge fund manager named Matthew Nelson who makes his money on crypto currency.

Cosgrove mentions that his ex-partner has an expensive car like this and wants him to go to Florida to work private security with him. It's tempting. Matthew shows up all angry and they give him the warrant. He says that he and Sarah used to date and broke up. He says he came to pick stuff up and claims he was on Zoom with investors in Asia. They impound his car in the meantime.

THere are no forensics but he washed his car the next day. Violent says Matthew put a Loom video up into Zoom and wasn't really there.

Nelson says he refuses to be arrested. Cosgrove informs him he can't do that. They arrest him.

Price says they can arraign on the murder of Sarah but not Madison  because with no body they can't prove she's dead.

The defense claims there is no evidence and her client is certain to be acquitted. For some reason the judge allows this even though it's an arraignment. Anyway the defense attorney wants a bail of $20 million. The judge agrees. Maroun asks for an ankle monitor. The judge agrees. Nelson smirks.

McCoy finds out Sarah was supposed to testify at a grand jury against Nelson for fraud. However the defense attorney files a motion to exclude. The defense attorney says there's no proof that Nelson knew Sarah was supposed to testify and the judge agrees, unless and until they can get some.

Shaw tells Dixon they have not found that proof yet. Violet finds evidence that Nelson hacked into Bruce's account. He won't give them his phone and Cosgrove threatens to arrest him for obstruction. He admits Maddie has emailed him and is hiding because she saw Nelson with the gun after Sarah died and she ran away. The cops demand to know where his sister is.

The cops go to the warehouse. Cosgrove refuses to wait for backup. He finds Maddie who whispers that Nelson is in there. COsgrove hears a noise. He fights with Nelson.  Nelson shoots him and kidnaps Madison, while Cosgrove is on the floor pointing a gun at him. Shaw comes up behind him and gets Nelson. Shaw notices Cosgrove is bleeding and then Cosgrove collapses.

In the hospital, Cosgrove refuses to admit his injuries were serious. Also he realizes Price was right -- they should have waited rather than assuming Madison was dead.

Price moves ahead with the opening statement in the murder trial against Nelson. Madison will testify even though she is traumatized. (Will she though?) The defense attorney harps on the fact that the DA's office charged Nelson with Maddie's murder  when she's alive -- thereofre Price is overzealous and can't be trusted. (Seriously?) Nor can you believe Madison since she's unstable and has been hiding in a warehouse -- maybe she killed Sarah.

Madison testifies and is very jumpy and upset about Sarah's death. Nelson stares at her and it throws her off. She cries that she can't do this, she has to go home.  The defense attorney says there can't be a continuance when the jury's been sworn in.

Madison claims Nelson pointed his fingers like a gun. Price tries to get her to testify but she says he's rich and will get someone to hunt her down. She runs away. The defense attorney wants to make a plea. Nelson attempts to bribe the DA's office -- with the support of his attorney. The ADA is not interested, but McCoy thinks they should consider it. Price refuses. Justice is not for sale. McCoy says then find a way to convict him.

Price fills Cosgrove in. Cosgrove wonders what the hell they are doing. People don't respect cops now, and he almost died for nothing. Cosgrove says he can help.

Cosgrove testifies.  The defense attorney objects but is overruled, twice. The defense attorney tries to say that Cosgrove made up a story when Price needed him. Price redirects to ask about Cosgrove not shooting at Nelson and being a hero. The defense objects and is again overruled.

The jury returns a verdict of GUILTY. Cosgrove is glad to see that he DOES make a difference once in a while.

Cosgrove: Look, if I let you jump this barrier, you'll contaminate a crime scene. So I know it's a pain in the ass, but you'll have to go around.
Man: Defund the police!
Crowd: Yeah!
Cosgrove: So nice to be loved in this city.

Cosgrove: Is this art or evidence?
Shaw: Hard to tell.
