Recap

A guy talks on the phone about how he fired someone but he's sure their threats are empty. Naturally, as soon as he gets off he phone someone hits him in the back of the head.

The widow says Jerome was a good man and her everything. She says he had no personal enemies and they never talked about business. He loved to walk at night and take in the city lights. Teenage daughter shows up. Cosgrove notes her school sweatshirt. She says she doesn't know anything and leaves. The wife says Jerome was complaining about work which was very unusual. He seemed stressed and said he was tired of being the bad guy.

Outtside, Shaw notes that Jerome had plenty of money and didn't need to stress about work. Cosgrove notes the daughter goes to Lily's school and that the school is too progressive for his taste. They find out from Violet about Jerome's ex-partner.

The ex-partner says he was mad that Jerome cut him out after they were supposed to be partners. Also jerome and his daughter had a screaming match the other day.

The daughter tells Cosgrove they had a fight about her vaping. Their arguments were her fault. She could b e a nightmare. Last night she had dinner with her mother and didn't even get to say goodbye or sorry. She says they had another fight yesterday because she bought Taylor Swift tickets. He called her a spoiled brat. She said she hated him.

Cosgrove comes home. His wife notes he seems stressed. He tells her the victim left behind a 16-year-old who goes to Lily's school.

Cosgrove asks Lily who says she knows the girl slightly. The girl hangs out with the rich kids but they hung out at the retreat and they were in a group together where they were supposed to share problems. But she's not supposed to tell him a bout it. Cosgrove promises it'll stay between them (yeah right). Lily says eating disorders, sexual assault, drugs, etc. Cosgrove wodners what she shared. She says she didn't say much and there's nothing to worry about. What about Sophia? She's not supposed to talk about it. He convinces her. Lily says Sophia said her father was abusive and might kill her someday.

Cosgrove and Shaw want to talk to Sophia in private, away from her boyfriend. Her mother shows up. Cosgrove tells them that someone said Sophia's dad was abusing her. Sophia says who told you that? Was it Lily? She claims her father was her best friend. She only said that because she was venting. He never hit her. He would just get mad like all fathers do so it popped into her head.

Surveillance footage shows Sophia sneaked out at 8:30 and stayed out til midnight. She went to a condo in Tribeca. One of the units belongs to the Walsh family. A kid named Cooper Walsh is also in Lily's class. Naturally he runs down the street and into traffic but some guy knocks him over for the cops.

Cooper claims he didn't know they were cops and thought they were going to kill him. He confirms that Sophia was with him when she sneaked out.  He says the reason Sophia lied about where she was is she has a boyfriend she can't seem to break up with and is cheating with him.

The cops discover that someone was tracking Jerome's phone.

Cooper claims he doesn't have a burner and doesn'know Jerome. He says that is not his number. The headmaster won't let the cops question him further. He is unaware that Cosgrove's daughter goes here. Cosgrove asks who was in charge of the retreat.

The teacher in charge says the retreat was very needed because the kids were isolated for two years due to COVID. However she won't say what Lily said, or Cooper, or anyone. She says Cooper is a great kid and she doesn't think he's capable of violence.

The cops discover the real location of the person owning the burner phone -- it belongs to Aaro's parents. Aaron is called in and despite being told multiple times to wait for his dad blurts out he killed Jerome. He is arrested despite his father saying he's taking him home.

Nolan sees Aaron Cole as a mixed up teen and they should consider juvenile court. Sam says if he was a Black gangbanger he wouldn't say so. McCoy says the last three similar cases were Black and tried as adults. Nolan doesn't see how charging Aaron as an adult helps that. McCoy says they need to treat everyone equally.

At arraignment, Aaron is remanded. His parents and the defense attorney think he should be treated as a child and that this is ridiculous. The deense tries to get the confession thrown out and the defense attorney claims he should not have been brought in without his parents.  The judge agrees with the defense attorney.

Without the confession it will be hard to make a case, especially since the blood on his hoodie is too small a sample to get DNA. However Violet has found footage of Aaron in a vacant lot both before and after the murder.

Shaw and Cosgrove find the murder weapon in a dumpster but there are no fingerprints. Shawn thinks it's a strong case even though there are no prints.

Violet finds a text to Aaron about what Sophia said. It's Lily's number.

Cosgrove confronts Lily. She says this is my fault? If I hadn't told Aaron... she was so freaked out. Can he keep this a secret, please?

Cosgrove tells Prie but wants Lily kept off the witness stand. Nolan wants to do what's best for the case. They haven't been able to find other witnesses. He's sorry, but he has no choice.

Lily testifies. The defense attorney accuses Lily of making this all up to impress the richer kids. The judge sustains the objection twice when the defense attorney continually accuses her of lying. The defense attorney then says that Lily had suicidal thoughts and therefore is not credible. Nolan objects but the judge sides with the defense attorney. However, she says she's made her point. The defense attorney has no more questions. Price redirects and the defense attorney makes a ridiculous objection that is overruled about her saying she's not instable.

Lily runs away and tells her parents that she never sad that she never said she was suicidal, she said that she understood why kids get stressed out. Also she can't trust them when Cosgrove said he wouldn't tell anyone about this and he lied.

The defense calls Alan Meyerson. Price objects. Now the defense wants to claim insanity and blame the school. The judge says they can call whoever they want.

The headmaster testifies about the retreat and is forced to admit he didn't vet the retreat with psychologists. He says the retreats do not damage students.  The defense attorney goes into a speech about how horrible the retreat idea are. Nolan objects. He also cross-examines and finds out that no one has ever become violent after the 8 previous retreats.

Aaron testifies. He says Lily talked to him a lot about Sophia. The night of the murder his heart raced like he was in danger and he thought Jerome would kill Sophia and so he blacked o ut and he doesn't remember killing Jerome. He remembers seeing he was dead. He's so sorry.

Price cross-examines. Aaron has to admit he stalked Sophia. He claims not to remember the murder.  He says he was trying to do the right thing. The judge decides to adjourn.

The defense attorney wants to discuss a plea that is fair to everyone. Man 1, ten years? She says it's clear Aaron is emotionally unstable and immature and he shouldn't rot in prison.

Nolan thinks they should realize Aaron is only 17. McCoy says they are trying him as an adult. Nolan says he'll tell Whitmer.

Aaron is found guilty of murder. He's sobbing as he's led away.

At home, Lily is asleep. Cosgrove asks how she's doing. His wife sighs. Cosgrove puts a blanket over her and says he loves her.

Shaw: This guy has an apartment that's worth what, $40 million?
Cosgrove: Give or take.
Shaw: My point is, if he's a billionaire, why is he worried about what he has to do at work?

Cop: She saw someone run west.
Cosgrove: Well, unless he was a fish, he didn't run east.
