Law & Order Season 21 Episode 9 revolves around the question of whether opioid manufacturers can be held responsible for addicts' deaths.

When a socialite is killed, there are a million suspects as usual, and drug use doesn't seem to be involved. However, the cops discover that the alleged socialite was a con artist pretending to be wealthy and that her super-rich boyfriend killed her after finding out the truth.

Wyatt's attorney quickly files a motion to claim that his opioid addiction was responsible for the murder. The judge doesn't accept this, but Wyatt has another trick up his sleeve: a recording proving his uncle knowingly sold opioids to doctors despite knowing it would kill their patients.

McCoy is skeptical, but Price convinces him to let him try the case against the uncle. He tries to prove that Charles was no different than a person with a handgun who shoots someone else because he knowingly sold drugs and only cared about profits.

Meanwhile, when Wyatt has a relapse, Maroun must decide whether or not to break the law as part of her attempt to prep him for trial.
