Law & Order Season 21 Episode 10 revolves around a case that looks straightforward but isn't.

When a cop is found shot to death, Cosgrove feels it is personal because he knew the guy, while McGrath demands that McCoy make sure the shooter is made to pay to send a message to anti-cop protesters. However, McCoy doesn't give a damn about optics; he cares only about what charges the facts will support.

Nolan decides, based on the evidence, to charge the shooter with manslaughter, which pisses off the cops, especially Cosgrove. Cosgrove thinks that Nolan is making excuses for the shooter because of her skin color and that she should be made to pay for killing a cop. Bernard thinks it's less straightforward and appreciates what Nolan is doing.

During the trial, Kendra's lawyer tries to make the case that Kendra shot a racist cop who she believed was threatening her life, while Price tries to prove that she shot a cop in cold blood and left him to die. To that end, Harris is allowed to call an IAB officer who investigated allegations that the victim was racist.
