Madam Secretary Season 5 Episode 16 tackles the issue of climate change.

After a tropical storm hits the island of Nahru in the Pacific, the head of NASA comes to see Elizabeth. He says that changes in the climate guarantee another storm will hit soon. The president of Nahru was killed in the last storm, leaving a 23-year-old graduate student in charge of the country.

The new president doesn't want to evacuate because the land and customs are special to his people. Elizabeth tries to convince him. Meanwhile, a search for a new island to move them to begins while another storm is predicted to hit.

While Elizabeth is dealing with this crisis, Mike B arranges for her and Henry to speak at a conference of evangelicals. Pastor Eli Bragg does not believe in climate change and thinks it's a hoax the government perpetuates as an excuse for taking more and more control of people's lives. Bragg asks Henry not to speak about anything controversial, but Elizabeth talks him into discussing climate change after Dalton and Russell are afraid to bring the issue up for debate in Congress.

Bragg is upset by Henry's speech but his daughter Ruby is a fan. However, when Henry and Elizabeth return home, Mike B is angry that she alienated Bragg and quits as campaign manager.
