Recap

Ace and Nancy are working on breaking their curse. They're on attempt #36, but it fails like all the others.

Bess learns about a complicated ritual the ancient Greeks once practiced to break a love curse. Ace needs an inoculation from Nancy using specific ingredients. Then they need a Plagonia Doll — a doll with a demon inside that can act as a supernatural battery pack and power a ritual with extra force.

They find one, but it must be kept inside a special protective box until they use it. Bess keeps the doll in the archive room. Then Nancy and Ace will have to drink an elixir made from very specific plants.

Bess is giving tours of the Historical Society, hoping to gain more donations.

Birdie, the girl who survived the fire souls on Moonstone Island, is now dating Jessie, George's sister.

Birdie wants to talk to Bess about what happened on the island. Her grandmother shuts her down when she brings up the subject, and her class thinks she invented the whole thing.

Avery overhears, and he makes fun of Birdie and Jessie. George calls him out, but Avery's father tells his son to ignore them because they only talk about such nonsense to get attention.

Bess backs Avery's father because she needs his support to keep her funding for the Historical Society. Upset, Jessie and Birdie retreat to the archive room and find the Plagonia Doll. They take the doll and decide to do a ritual in front of Avery to prove to him that the supernatural exists.

Jessie and Birdie have Avery follow them into the woods, where they perform a ritual to make a dog come to life. Unfortunately, they release the demon from the doll, and it jumps into Avery, who tries to attack them. They run, and Birdie calls Nancy for help.

Bess researches the demon that jumped from the doll to Avery. It eventually kills its host and can inhabit more than one host at a time. Bess believes she can exorcise the demon and return it to the doll.

In the meantime, it's time for Nancy to paint a sigil on Ace, which will inoculate him against Nancy. While she does, they talk about when they first knew they had feelings for one another. For Nancy, it was after the wraith. For Ace, it was in high school when he watched Nancy struggle with, and then successfully make, a volcano explode.

Nancy admits to going to his house to tell him how she felt about him but found he had left on a road trip with Amanda. Nancy was so jealous of Amanda. Ace admits he was jealous of Gill and Park.

That's when Bess screams for Nancy. Avery has arrived, but before they can perform the exorcism, he swirls into dust, and Birdie and Jessie disappear with him. They go to the woods where the girls first performed the ritual and find them floating above the ground. They perform the exorcism, even though they realize the doll will be destroyed when the demon is forced back into it. It means Ace and Nancy can't use it to break their curse.

The Drew Crew figures out that there was a matching doll with light energy instead of dark energy. They find it in an antique shop in New Hampshire.

Back in Horseshoe Bay, Ace, and Nancy, with the help of the Drew Crew, perform the ritual to break their curse. Nancy and Ace share what is for Ace, their first kiss, and the curse is seen leaving them.

But at the last minute, the curse returns to their bodies, and the flower petals they used in the ritual turn into white moths.

They realize that Temperance predicted how they would try to break the curse and sabotaged the special flowers they needed. Nancy collapses to the floor, and Ace holds her and yells for someone to call 9-1-1.

Nancy wakes up in the hospital. Carson is frantic. She almost died. They couldn't stabilize her heart rate. He begs her to stop trying to break this curse. He knows how difficult it is to be without the love of his life and not be able to change it. But he can't lose Nancy the way he lost Kate.

At his house, Carson is upset when Jean uses one of Kate's special antique tea cups. She asks him if he's still grieving his wife, as it's only been a year since she died. At first, Carson denies it, but after his scare with Nancy, he joins a widower's grief group.

Out of the hospital, Nancy is working on a new way to break the curse, but Ace tells her he can't do this again. He won't risk her life. He'd prefer they live in this world as friends rather than lose one another for good. He's terrified that Temperance has blocked every turn and that no matter what they try, they'll always worry she's sabotaged it, and one of them could die at any moment.

Having watched Nancy almost die is too much for him. He won't risk losing her forever. But Nancy knows what it's like to kiss him now for real, and she won't go back. But Ace can't go forward. He leaves because being there with her hurts too much.

George is worried that Jessie doesn't understand the dangers of the supernatural and may try more rituals. She asks Nick to talk to Jessie because the girl is more likely to listen to Nick. But after he speaks with Jessie, George is upset because he told Jessie that George needs to set better boundaries.

Nick gets angry. When most people break up, they get space. They don't have to run a business and co-parent together. Nick needs space from George. George is upset, but she agrees to give him his space.

Avery's father comes to see Bess. He's angry because his son wants to learn more about the occult. It's his decision what his son learns, not hers, and he pulls his donation from the Historical Society.

Bess heads back to the archive room where she is teaching Birdie and Jessie. She believes they have the right to learn about all of this, but she may not have as much time as she had hoped to show them.

Nick speaks at the town council meeting about checking the water supply after the tsunami. When a resident goes off about a conspiracy theory that all of Horseshoe Bay's problems are caused by people dabbling in the occult, Nick manages to talk him down. Impressed, the town council asks Nick to be a part of their private session as a representative of small business owners.

At the meeting, Councilwoman Brie agrees to do the water test, but later, she reneges on that plan. As she gets takeout from The Claw and posts a picture of her and Nick online, she tells him that she doesn't tell him how to run his business and that he shouldn't tell her how to run her town.

Later, Brie calls someone and says she took care of the water thing and she'll see them at the council meeting. Then, black veins creep up her neck while she's in a bath. She screams.

Nancy Drew Season 4 Episode 3 Quotes

Nancy: I know it seems impossible, but has the impossible ever stopped us?
Ace: That’s a good point. I still remember seeing you in high school. You were working on that like a podium, powder, the volcano. I was a senior. You were a sophomore, and you refused to quit until that thing erupted in actual flames.
Nancy: I didn’t realize I was on your radar in high school.
Ace: You stood out.

Hey, Jessie and Birdie. Wannabe Harriette Potters. You two fake witches want to explain why you dragged me out here?
