Recap

On the weekly podcast, Maddie talks about how jail changed her and how the challenge is to hold on to who you know you are after being arrested.

Easy's pastor wants him to help a guy who was falsely convicted of murder at the age of 14.

The team goes to see William. He has drawn a ton of amazing artwork and tells them a guy named Rabbit gave him the gun. He says the cops said he made up Rabbit but that's not true. He wants them to do God's will and try to help him.

Easy fills in the rest of the team. William was railroaded. His aunt and him didn't know he was under arrest and talked to the cops without a lawyer. He gave the gun up to help.

They want to find out more about the jury in William's case. Violet doesn't want to go out with this jury administrator who has been bothering her but decides to anyway to get info.

A juror says she thought William was innocent but changed her mind after reading about his victim in the newspaper. THe judge agrees this was jury misconduct and grants a new trial.

Violet can't believe she is going out with Radcliffe. She'd rather date question mark guy on Maddie's wall. Maddie says that's a guy named Jim. She remembers Rosemary saying Jim was stalking her. She has no idea who he is or how to find him. Violet is sure she can help.

Easy confronts his son about having a fake ID. He says he doesn't get that as a black kid in Chicago he already has a target on his back. He grounds his son.

The team works on William's case. The arresting officer is a jerk that juries love.

Bellows is in the courtroom smiling when the team gets there. He can't wait to dance with Maddie.

The cop insists that William is the killer. Easy asks why there is no video of the confession. The cop says the video was corrupted. The cop says William was lying because he didn't know any Rabbit. Easy accuses the cop of lying. Bellows objects, badgering. Objection sustained.

Bodie is trying to find Rabbit. Maddie says we need to establish an alibi. Violet looks at the photo of William and realizes he was at a comic book star. Bodie asks Maddie why Easy is so cranky. She says he doesn't want to let down his church.

Easy has another fight with his son, who is defying his punishment by playing video games.

Maddie goes on a date with Reporter Guy. He tells her there's more to her than prison and wants to find out what she's about. They dance and end up kissing.

Maddie endorses Esteban Miller for attorney general and goes on that about how Bellows is corrupt. Bellows is not happy. He insists Maddie and Levi are guilty. He wants to bring Rosemary's parents in as examples of victims he is protecting.

At Levi's hearing, the plea bargain is thrown out and the DA claims that Levi is guilty of assault with a deadly weapon.

Some guards beat up William and confiscate his drawings, which they claim on the stand proves he is violent. Bellows tries to say that this is an admission of guilt. Easy objects but isn't successful. The warden claims the drawings are proof of guilt. Maddie points out the drawings are fantastical (e.g. wings), so they're proof of nothing.

Bodie tracks down Rabbit who runs away. Bodie loses him thanks to a locked gate and runs the other way. He knocks Rabbit over with a laundry basket. THe guy says he is Rabbit's brother and Rabbit was shot and killed a year ago.

The Lynches come to see Bellows, who wants to create a new law for victims' rights that make it harder for people to be exonerated for crimes like murder. Mr. Lynch feels they are being used for political points and walks out. Mrs. Lynch says they are divorced. SHe is interested. Bellows wants to name the bill after Rosemary. She says her ex-husband thinks Levi and Maddie are innocent but she disagrees.

Bodie has some sort of weird violent altercation with a cop he is sort of dating, and wants her to help him find RabbitÅ› file.

At the Chicago Daily Post, Reporter Guy's boss wants a story about Maddie being guilty ASAP.

Bodie has Rabbit's police report -- he was arrested by the same guy as William.

Radcliff shows up to date Violet. He has a parrot with him named Curveball. Bodie is amused by this guy. Violet is not.

Easy questions the cop on the stand and introduces Rabbit's arrest report as evidence. It has the name Rabbit on it and was before WIlliam's arrest. Yet he never questioned Rabbit. He says criminals blame other criminals. Bellows looks unhappy.

At the comic book shop the clerk says he didn't know about the trial. He took the alibi photo. He testifies that William was in his store at the time. Bellows gets him to say he's not entirely positive and makes a speech about how relatively doesn't bring back the dead person.

Easy doesn't want William to testify. William's aunt and Maddie want him to. He won't listen. Easy and Maddie are mad at each other.

Easy goes to see a therapist and says he's angry all the time. He says no one saw the kid in William because he's 6'4". He's worried about his son. He was a punk on the street when he was 14 like Michael and got in a lot of trouble. He got beat up and went to the church and felt he saw Jesus. The therapist asks why he's telling her this? He says we're all lost when we're 14. He's worried Michael won't find his way. He doesn't know if his son knows he's there for him. The therapist suggests he listen to what Michael has to say.

Easy apologizes to Maddie. He says he's worried about Michael -- he could end up like William. Maddie says William needs to testify. She felt powerless and alone when she didn't testify. Easy is afraid of what Bellows will do and how William will respond. Easy realizes Maddie is right.

William is drawing and not paying attention while Easy talks to him. William doesn't seem to be talking. He shows them a drawing. He made Easy and Maddie superheroes. He agrees to testify.

Bellows calls William a liar and Maddie remembers him badgering her.

Maddie gets up and asks him about the photo. She tells the jury that he was 14 and questioned for 20 hours. William says the cops said if he confessed he could go home. He felt safe at home. The cops said he could trust them, they needed his help to find the shooter, that he'd be a hero. He showed them the gun and told them about Rabbit. He cries that he was tired and wanted to go home. He was a good guy, he didn't shoot anyone.

Maddie talks Easy into doing the closing. MEanwhile, Violet has found Jim. He is Levi.

Easy is trying to work on his closing while his son is at the table. He tells his son he loves him.  Michael says want some ice cream? Easy refrains from saying anything as Michael eats out of the container.

Easy gives a closing about a 14-year-old boy who just wants to be believed. If you believe it's possible that young boy just said what he thought the detective wanted to hear, that's reasonable doubt. Bellows makes some sort of speech about how Leviticus says if you're guilty you must confess. He says that there is no doubt William is guilty. The detective said he didn't strongarm the detective so that's that. He talks about the victim and how scared he must have been. William confessed because he did it.

Jury is back as Violet is doing her podcast about William. William is found innocent!  Bellows and Susan plan to change the narrative with a new press conference so no one will notice. They trot out Rosemary's mother to promote their law and state no survivor should be silenced or alone.

Maddie comes home and finds Levi. She accused him of breaking into her house. She wants to know what happened between him and Rosemary. She knows Rosemary was scared of him. He's upset that Maddie is afraid of him. He says he loves her and leaves. She locks the door and looks scared.

That's the problem. The judge sees a guy he thinks is an adult in his courtroom, he treats him like an adult.

Easy

The moment I was accused of Rosemary Lynch's murder, the world saw me as someone different. I wasn't Madeline Scott anymore. I was the party girl, the killer... and I was also a victim.
