Recap

Ben leaps into a man in Giza, Egypt in 1961. According to his ID and hotel key, his name is Michaal Allison and he’s staying at the Mena House Hotel in Cairo, Rm. 212.

He asks the man leading his horse drawn taxi if he can go back to Cairo. The driver points in the direction of Cairo. Ben gets out and starts walking.

He waves down a man on a moped. The man offers to take him back to Cairo for twenty American dollars.

At the hotel, he discovers it is hosting the International Convention of Applied Science. He notices a man in a hat and glasses looking his way and then hiding behind a newspaper. Ben sits down close to him and he introduces himself as Shephard Barnes, a CIA station chief.

Barnes shares they are meeting the East Germans at 1pm. The contact will have a pink pocket square. He leaves Ben a number written on the back of a coaster and tells him to make contact and see if he can save the world. Ben realizes that he’s a spy.

In the present-day, Addison and Tom are cooking shakshuka. As he’s handing her the spices for the dish, his secure line rings and he leaves to answer it. Addison looks for caraway in his absence and finds a ring in a ring box in a drawer.

She hides it before he returns and tells her he has to head to D.C. immediately.

At HQ, Addison tells Ian about the ring. Jenn comes in and they clam up about it. She informs them they’ve found Ben.

Ben argues that the contact wants to talk, not to kill him. Just then the man with the pink pocket square disappears, only to appear behind Ben. Ben turns to face him and someone else comes up behind him and sticks something into his back.

The pocket square man leaves. Ben warns the person behind him that his backup is watching. She laughs and says she knows there is no backup. She reveals that she’s only sticking a lighter into his back. She is the actual contact.

She introduces herself as Layla Adel, an Egyptologist. She explains that she works as a guide for European elites. Addison points out that makes a perfect cover for a spy.

Ben asks her to show him around Giza. She tells him that she wants to go to The West but can’t do so through traditional means.

At HQ, Jenn and Addison look up Layla’s credentials.

In Egypt, Layla offers to give Ben all the details she has learned of East German and Soviet operations across the Middle East.

At HQ, Addison asks Jenn to cross-reference Layla’s information with intel on an East German operative codenamed Nomad.

Layla offers Ben a chance to photograph a meeting between herself and a traitor embedded in the American Embassy.

Addison tells Jenn the US has been trying to figure out the real identity of Nomad for decades. The results come in and confirm that Layla is Nomad.

Barnes doesn’t believe Layla could be Nomad, but he confirms that there is a known traitor at the US Embassy.

Barnes wants Ben to bug the meeting between Layla and the traitor. He sneezes and drops a wallet on the ground. There’s a transmitter in the wallet and he leaves a briefcase for Ben that contains a receiver he can use to record the conversation.

Ben’s nervous about the operation. Addison tries to pep talk him about how taking Nomad out of the picture will save the lives of many US assets who die because of Layla’s involvement. She stops talking suddenly. Ben looks over and spots Hannah.

[Quick flashback montage of Ben and Hannah’s history together.]

Addison flashes back to HQ. Hannah looks over and sees Ben who hides behind his paper. She excuses herself from her conversation partner and goes over to him, asking if it’s him by name.

She acts relieved, commenting how many people she’s approached the same way over the past six years.

They go to his hotel room together to talk privately and get caught up.

At HQ, Ian confirms Hannah is not a leaper. Addison is suspicious. Jenn runs through the last six years of Hannah’s life. She got her Ph.D. and consults with the US government.

In the hotel room, they express that they’ve missed each other. Hannah offers to help him with his mission. He demurs at first but Addison arrives and lets him know Hannah can probably help.

Hannah wants to introduce herself to Addison, so Ben introduces Addison as his only link to where he’s from.

Addison points out that he’ll look less suspicious planting the bug if he’s with a woman.

They plant the bug and Ben and Hannah sit down with some coffee while Addison keeps watch for Layla.

While Ben and Hannah pretend to be honeymooners, Addison notices Layla going into a different shop than the one Ben bugged.

They can’t get into the shop because the traitor arrives and the shopkeeper turns the sign to closed.

Addison tells Ben there’s a back entrance. Hannah tells him to get the bug and be ready for “the show”.

Ben sneaks in the back with the bug and Hannah storms into the store as a disgruntled customer. Layla notices Ben and he passes her the transmitter while her mark talks to Hannah.

Layla plants the transmitter and their conversation resumes with the mark, Palmer, telling her he has a lot of information the Stasi will pay a lot for.

Barnes is livid to discover the identity of the traitor at the embassy. He plans to have Layla out of the country within the day. Ben reminds him not to grab Palmer until after Layla is gone.

Hannah celebrates the successful mission as they return to the hotel room. They find Layla there and she is upset.

She accuses Ben of being dishonorable, but Hannah steps up to defend him. Addison realizes something and zips back to HQ. Layla is calmed by Hannah’s words and ready to follow the instructions to leave the country.

At HQ, Addison leaves the chamber looking lost. Jenn checks on her and Addison tells her and Ian that the accelerator keeps bringing Ben and Hannah together because they’re in love.

In the hotel room, Hannah and Ben are alone and she leans in close to kiss him. He’s reluctant, unsure about the situation. She points out that it’s been six years since they were last together and she wants to take advantage of every minute they’re together.

Ben still resists and she accepts it.

At HQ, Magic and Addison discuss Ben and Hannah. Magic advises Addison to be true to her present not some future that may never happen.

Jenn alerts them that it’s time for Layla’s extraction.

While waiting for Layla, Addison and Ben share that they still love each other and wish each other happiness. Ben admits he likes Tom.

The car for Layla pulls up and Addison spots Layla approaching from up the street. Suddenly, some men get out of a nearby car. Layla pulls a scarf around her head and heads in the other direction. Addison realizes Layla’s cover was blown and that means Ben’s was too. He has to run.

Evading the East Germans chasing after him, he and Addison realize Barnes must’ve blown Layla’s cover by arresting Barnes.

Ben confronts Barnes and Barnes admits he moved on Palmer early. When Ben insists on going after Layla, Barnes tells him she’s already dead, killed by the Stasi.

Despite Barnes warning him not to return to the hotel, Ben goes to find Hannah and tells her that Layla’s dead and he’s failed his mission. She embraces him.

The next morning, they talk over room service breakfast. Ben’s not sure what happens now that he’s failed his mission. Hannah floats a few ideas.

At HQ, Magic’s adamant they don’t give up. Addison postulates that this is Ben’s happy ending, living out life in 1961 with Hannah. As they consider this, Ziggy starts to ring.

In the hotel room, Ben and Hannah kiss. Hannah pauses for a moment. Before she can tell Ben what she’s thought of, the phone rings. It’s Barnes calling for Ben. He tells Ben that the Stasi are still combing the streets, looking for someone. Barnes tells him that Layla may have escaped.

Jenn figures out Layla’s probably hiding in the Qalawun Mosque which is full of private chambers that the public can’t access but which Layla as a guide would be able to lay low in.

Ben calls Barnes and tells him it’ll need to be a group effort to get Layla out safely.

Ben enters the mosque with Stasi members chasing him. One finds Ben but he uses his boxing skills to knock him out. Layla finds him and tells him she knows he didn’t betray her. When he asks her to trust him one more time, she’s cautious.

He asks her why she reached out in the first place. She says she wanted to change her destiny by taking control of it. He promises they can help her do that.

Outside, Ben and Layla avoid Stasi attention until Addison tells them, “He’s coming” and Ben shouts Layla’s name to get the Stasi’s to come at him. They surround Ben and a female companion but she is Hannah, not Layla.

The Stasi commander searches a tour bus and then notices his car’s been stolen.

In his car, headed out of Cairo, Barnes drives Layla and introduces himself. She returns the favor but adds that he knows her better as Nomad.

Addison tells Ben that Layla proves instrumental in dismantling the Soviet spy network in the Middle East. Hannah thanks Addison for all her help. Addison says she’s welcome and returns to HQ. Ben and Hannah say their “See you later”s with Hannah making him promise to find her next time so she doesn’t have to keep approaching strangers. He promises. She tells him again she loves him and leaves. He leaps.

Addison gets home to find Tom in the kitchen. Addison thinks he’s going to propose but instead of a ring, he hands her a portfolio. He says it’s a way to bring Ben home.

Quantum Leap Season 2 Episode 8 Quotes

Jenn: What are you two whispering about?
Ian: You
Addison: [at the same time] Magic.
Jenn: [beat] Deception noted.

Barnes: This is your first field operation, right?
Ben: Yes. It is.
Barnes: Well, the good news is you’ve never been to Cairo so the Stasi don’t know you. Bad news is if this is a trap, they’ll torture you and bury you in the desert with the rest of the pharaohs. Relax, kid. I’m just teasing. It doesn’t happen. Often.
