Recap

Ben lands in a host selling shoes in Koreatown in LA. An African-American teen comes in and Ben’s host’s father indicates he thinks the teen is trouble.

Ben checks in with the teen and he says Sonny, Ben’s host’s brother, has something in the back for him. When Sonny gives Ben the box, it feels too light to have shoes in it. Ben opens it and it’s full of cash. Sonny tells him it’s not what he thinks and he should trust him.

Magic makes a breakfast. Beth Calavicci comes downstairs, surprised by the breakfast. Magic wishes her a happy first date anniversary and gives her a pair of pearl earrings.

He mentions they have dinner reservations but he had to choose a later time in case he gets caught up at QL. Beth cautions him about getting too involved after everything he went through when the project was shut down.

In the leap, Ben and Sonny’s father is threatening the teen, Dwain, with the police if he doesn’t leave. Sonny smooths things over but the father still doesn’t trust Dwain and tells him to stay away from the store.

At HQ, Jenn’s wondering if Magic’s prepared to be the hologuide. Addison hands the handlink over to Magic and wishes him luck.

Magic greets Ben in the store. Ben’s happy and surprised to see him.

Ben fills Magic in on being Daniel Park and believes the leap is about the family store. As Magic looks into more details, the TV news reports the verdict on the Rodney King case.

They realized it’s April 29, 1992. The LA riots are about to begin.

Magic believes Ben is there to save Sonny and their father, Jin. In the original timeline, the store is ransacked and Jin is killed.

Ben proposes they shut the store early but Jin refuses. He sends the sons to the alley to clean up the mess in the alley. Ben tries to convince Sonny to get Jin to close up early and get somewhere safe.

Sonny wonders when Daniel/Ben is going to tell Jin that he joined the Marines. Sonny shares he has a side hustle to keep the cash flow going if the store goes under due to the bigger shoe stores opening in the area.

The violence starts to reach Koreatown. A customer comes in and lets them know the police have lost control and are shutting down parts of the city. Ben wants them all to leave but Jin insists they’ll shelter in place.

At HQ, Jenn and Ian are trying to sift through the information to find the reason Jin dies.

Magic tries to keep them focused when they want to discuss Ben and Addison.

Ian pulls up a medical report that shows Jin died of blunt force trauma to the head. He died right outside of his store. Neither Sonny nor Daniel were with him and out of guilt they both gave up their dreams to try to keep the store afloat.

Ben’s walking the customer, a nurse, to her car, observing the armed shop owners on the rooftops. They find her car burned out.

Magic returns and urges Ben to get back to the store. Ben brings the nurse, Luisa, back to the store with him.

Ben tries again to convince Jin to leave but Sonny points out there’s no way out of Koreatown. Magic confirms the roads are all shut down.

Jin pulls out a gun he bought to protect the store. Ben doesn’t want Jin to go up on the roof. Sonny offers to go.

Magic offers advice as Ben, Luisa, and Jin begin to fortify the store in order to ride out the riots.

Magic’s called back to HQ. Beth’s arrived with a packed lunch. She insists they discuss things in his office.

In his office, she pulls an empty whisky bottle from the lunch bag. Magic insists he found it and poured it out immediately. He swears he isn’t drinking again. Beth reminds him what he was like when they thought Ben was gone.

At the store, Dwain comes banging on the door in panic. Jin doesn’t want to let him in and he runs off. Magic tells Ben to go after him.

Sonny tells Jin he’s wrong about Dwain and says they’re business partners, with plans to start a new shoe line. Jin lectures him on the legacy of the store. Jin tells Sonny he’s ungrateful and that Daniel will take over the store. Sonny forces Ben to admit that Daniel enlisted in the Marines and is leaving.

Magic’s urgency grows and Ben grabs Sonny to go find Dwain.

Sonny and Ben talk as they look for Dwain. Magic comes to give them Dwain’s location. They find him in a blind alley and get him to hide before a group of cops show up. He stays hidden until the police are called back.

Magic watches it all with panic on his face. After the police leave and the guys go in different directions, Ben checks on Magic and Magic admits he can’t do this job and returns to HQ.

Ian and Jenn see Magic leave the imaging chamber and head to his office. Jenn finds him in his office, clearly needing a drink.

Magic shares that he was caught in the race riots of 1967. He was on leave in Detroit, visiting family. He and his cousin Phil were assaulted by four cops. They were beaten with batons and left for dead. Magic says it’s a miracle they both lived through it. He tells Jenn that seeing Dwain’s face made him realize that the systemic oppression will always light the fuse. Jenn offers to step in on the leap, but he says he’ll fulfill his promise to Ben.

In the store, Jin is upset that Ben brings Dwain back. Ben tells him in Korean that by caring more for the store than his family, he’ll destroy his own legacy. Jin demands to know when Daniel learned to speak Korean. Suddenly, there’s a mob at the store, trying to break in through the door and windows.

Ben gets Jin, Dwain, and Luisa into the stock room and locks them all inside before the mob breaks through.

Magic gives the all clear once the mob takes all the shoes from the store. Ben and the others come out and start cleaning. Magic apologizes for bailing so suddenly. Ben says they can always talk if Magic needs it. Magic says it’s the same for him.

Magic confesses that he’s an alcoholic and that it started when they thought Ben was gone. Beth got him help and helped him stay sober.

Ian finds Addison working out. He confesses that he feels enormous guilt for everything that’s happened because it was his future self that set all of this in motion. Addison reminds him that he did his best for the team and he needs to focus on what’s next not what was.

As they hug it out, Jenn calls Ian and tells him that Ziggy’s freaking out.

Ian returns to Ziggy and finds that Jin’s blunt force trauma was caused by his own rifle. However, now that Ben’s brought Dwain back to the store, someone else is going to die.

In the store, Dwain tries to console Jin with the fact the looters only took stuff and at least he’s safe and he has his sons. Jin yells at him, calling him a punk. Dwain takes umbrage and points out that he’s going to graduate top five in his class and has scholarship offers to three Ivy League schools. Jin points his gun at Dwain. Ben gets in between and tells them to listen to each other.

Someone comes in the back door and Jin shoots, thinking it’s the looters again. He hits Sonny, who was coming in with supplies from the local store.

Ben remembers an abandoned ambulance up the street. They carry Sonny to the ambulance where Luisa can use the supplies to stabilize him.

Dwain finds the ambulance keys in the engine and tries to get it to start but a unit of riot police spot him and draw their weapons on him. Jin sees this and stands in front of Dwain to protect him and tells the police to leave them alone so he can save his son.

As they’re riding to the hospital, Magic lets Ben know that Sonny survives and he and Dwain build a shoe empire with Jin as their first investor and Daniel later becoming their first CFO after his time in the Marines and business school.

Ben leaps after assuring everyone, including Magic, that they’re all going to be okay.

Magic exits the imaging chamber and Addison, Jenn, and Ian congratulate him on a mission accomplished. He leaves, giving Beth a call and asking her to come with him to a meeting rather than their planned dinner date.

Ben lands in a host that uses a cane. A man named Lawrence approaches him, bleeding heavily from a bullet wound. He falls to the ground and tells Ben, addressing him as Henry, that someone with cold, blue eyes followed him, thinking he had the formula. He charges Henry with finding it before they do and dies, uttering the word, “Pathfinder.”

Quantum Leap Season 2 Episode 5 Quotes

Sonny: The kid’s a real visionary. Just sucks that Dad refuses to see any of that.
Ben: Yeah, yeah, I know. And it’s ridiculous, but I think it’s because he’s afraid. This store is his family’s legacy. Only now, he’s got one son who’s planning to go off on his own and another who’s about to join the military and a mob who’s threatening to tear it all down. It’s like he’s about to lose everything.

The LA riots were one of the most complicated events in recent history. I mean there were so many different points of view. So much information and misinformation between the police and the media and the people on the ground. The reality of the situation shifted from moment to moment so there was really no objective truth. Just a whole lot of fear and rage and violence.
