Recap

Sam finds a wet towel on the floor, sounding the alarm that those who know Cassie best would never imagine it came from her.

Sam is treating a basketball player.

Donovan planned a beautiful breakfast for Abigail, surprising her with a check. She's silenced, which he takes as a good thing.

Joy can't shake the same bad dream she's had for months, and waking up the same time in the dream, again and again, is robbing her of sleep.

Martha gives Joy a dream pillow that's said to make dreams much easier to take.

Joy is helping Martha with a walk-in closet. That gives her a look into a very cool cupboard of keepsakes, including the Middleton Exchange wheel, which Joy is eager to reboot.

George says that Laurel put the kibosh on that tradition because people lost track of why they were giving. Joy promises to uphold the beauty of the tradition, and Sam donates his first stethoscope to get things started.

The bistro is hosting speed dating, and Stephanie's trying to lure Sean the festivities.

Adam walks past Sean on his way into the bistro, and he is a little jealous, especially since he didn't know she was learning French.

Martha is hosting a get-together with the hope she'll get a blanket passed down to her. Tom doesn't want her to get her hopes up.

Cassie and Abigail discuss marriage, and Abigail's ideas of marriage aren't traditional. That's why she's freaking out over the check.

Joy helps Zoey with her sink and stumbles into an uncomfortable conversation with her about her ex. Zoey doesn't want to talk about it and ushers Joy out the door. From asking her to be her first passenger with flying lessons to that, it's a leap.

Adam joins Sam for some basketball. He's having a hard time with Stephanie, and he gets advice he doesn't want to hear.

After delivering it, Sam crashes to the floor and crushes his radial nerve. He won't be doing surgery for a while, not on Damian Hall the basketball great, or anyone else for that matter. Grant is very upset at the PR nightmare.

Adam feels like it was his fault since they were both going for the ball at the same time.

Joy, Cassie, and Stephanie consider items for the Middleton Exchange. Stephanie gives a set of champagne glasses that she used for her first glass of the sparkly beverage.

OMG. Martha's oldest cousin, Maxine, in from Texas, looks just like Martha.

Abigail tells Donovan she won't take the money. He thinks that marriage means they share everything, and she's not so sure.

Zoey has 45 records for the exchange and an apology. Then she tells Joy about Avery, who died in the line of duty. Nobody in Middleton knows that. Avery pulled a little boy from a three-alarm fire, but in giving up her oxygen, inhaled too much smoke.

She came to start over, but it's still tough.

Abigail catches Adam outside the flower shop. She has the same advice. You can't be friends with an ex. She asks him for advice, too. His suggestion is premarital counseling. Together.

Sam is terrified that he will never operate again. Cassie suggests they play with Pirate King Adventure, a game he used to play with is sister when they were younger. She tried to get it for him last year, but it's not made anymore.

Maxine brought her childhood sterling silver rattle, disappointing Martha, who wanted the cherished family blanket they used in the Middleton exchange one year and which got passed between families for years until it mysteriously disappeared when Dylan was born.

Maxine recalls Martha blaming her for stealing it, and Maxine says she'll admit that when Martha admits to stealing Tom from her.

Adam visits Sam with some hot wings. He catches Sam watching The Natural, not interested in small talk.

Adam knows that Sam blames him, and Sam doesn't counter that thought.

Stephanie says they're down a dater again. Joy won't step in, but she'll host so that Stephanie can take the empty chairs.

Cassie tells Maxine that she's been holding a grudge for 30 years, and if they don't break up, she'll never find somebody else.

Abigail tells Donovan about counseling, and George butts in to say that in his years, he's never found counseling to be a bad idea. Using his political debates as an example, George wonders if they would have gone as well without a moderator.

While speed dating, Stephanie and Sean connect over their knowledge of archery.

Sean was almost in the Olympics, again besting Stephanie's attempt at boasting her Camp Weehawken Gold.

Cassie asks Tom for advice about Sam, and he thinks she should let him stew until he's ready.

Joy visits Zoey again and talks about a baby squirrel named Bow Tie who she and her mom raised together showed up a year after her mother died.

Abigail has always taken care of herself, and she can't stop. Donovan says that a good doubles partner plays to your strength. She ruins the mood again when she reveals she will be keeping her last name.

Tom is trying to remind Martha and Maxine, M&M for short, that they had wonderful adventures together. Of course, that leads to bad blood that Tom tries to dissipate by showing an old box of toys the boys had. The family blanket is hidden in there, hidden by Dylan. M&M forgive each other.

Stephanie wants to talk with Sean about dating. He thinks their spark is more of a blaze, and he doesn't care about being a rebound or their age difference, and she's easily swayed.

George finds Adam in the church. He's getting pretty attached. The church is theirs. They just need to find the money to ease it on down the road.

It's time for the Middleton Exchange. Everyone but Cassie and Sam open their gifts. Abigail got the champagne glasses. Stephanie got Adam's beaded bracelet. Joy got runes. Martha got Rocketman and Tom a record player. Jerry Ridley sneaks in. He's been teaching history in Texas, and Cassie's tablet lights their spark.

Sam discovers what's wrong with Damian Hall without surgery. Damian's blood pressure was elevated, and it was a human example of root rot.

Cassie wants Sam to open his gift. it's the Pirate King's Adventure. He's thrilled.

Adam visits the bistro. Stephanie knows that Adam is worried about Sam. She gives advice not to let Sam not talk to him. He needs his friends right now.

Adam wonders if it's realistic to be friends, and she has no doubt.

Joy takes Zoey the gift from the Middleton Exchange. Inside is a bow tie. Zoey thought Joy did it, but Joy had no idea. Joy puts it around Zoey's neck, and Zoey asks her to help paint the canoe.

In the spirit of doubles, Abigail wants to be Abigail Pershing-Davenport.

Sam ignores a call from Adam, much to Cassie's dismay.
