Recap

Do things happen by chance or by choice?

That's one of the questions This Is Us Season 2 Episode 7 poses.

As Rebecca and Jack try to officially adopt Randall, we meet the Big Three as toddlers.

There are nerves, home visits, and perfectly cleaned houses to prove that they are suitable parents.

But despite their glowing review, the judge doesn't believe that their household is fit for a black boy, who will one day become a black man.

Rebecca is a fighter so she writes a letter to the judge to convince him that even though mixed-race families aren't the norm, there's will be.

The judge presiding over the adoption stands down and the case goes to another judge, who, without hesitation, makes Randall an official member of the family.

While the Pearsons are celebrating the victory, William's life is in shambles as he's being booked for drugs.

Not only that, he tells the judge that in a year's time he lost his mother, his girl and his baby boy.

He never stood a chance when there is someone selling on every street corner.

The judge decides to give him another chance and promises to help him get the help he needs, which allows him to live out his life and eventually, meet his son.

In the present, Randall is learning the ins-and-outs of the foster system.

He takes Deja to visit her mother in prison as part of a court-ordered procedure.

But Shauna opts out of seeing her daughter, breaking Deja's heart.

When he tells Beth, she is furious and tells him that despite court orders, they won't be sending Deja to suffer through any more disappointments.

The next day, Randall takes it upon himself to introduce himself to Shauna, who emerges from her cell all bruised up.

She tells him she didn't want her daughter to see her this way but Randall doesn't have much sympathy.

Shauna tells him that her choices leading up to this moment weren't great but when she's out, she will come for her daughter.

And even though Randall believes Deja should have a relationship with her biological mother, he tells her he will fight for the girl if it comes down to it.

Kate is 10-weeks pregnant and decides that it's time to start telling some family members.

They tell Kevin first but he can't even fake his excitement because he's so doped up on prescription pills.

Kate wants to tell Toby's mother second but he freaks out because she's a devout Catholic who will not be happy that her son is having a baby out of wedlock.

She suggests that they get married at the courthouse. Since their relationship has never been traditional, they don't need a traditional wedding.

But Toby begins picking up on little signs that Kate actually wants the big, cliche wedding.

After all, she is obsessed with "Say Yes to the Dress."

He turns to the late Jack -- whose ashes are up on the mantle -- for advice.

After a guy heart-to-heart, he decides to propose to Kate by peeling off several layers of hoodies, which reads "Will You Marry Me."

Of course, Kate says yes!

Meanwhile, Kevin feels like he has something to prove now that his twin is moving on with her life.

As he heads to New York to visit Sophie, he buys not one but three engagement rings.

Sophie is still mad at him for what he pulled at the gala so he needs a grand gesture to fix the mess. That's something Jack would do to apologize to Rebecca.

Upon arrival in New York, Kevin has some trippy dreams, in which he's a terrible husband and father to Sophie and their kids because of the pills.

He arrives at her doorstep, this time to tell her that things aren't going to work out between them.

He tells her that when he came to ask her for a second chance, he was playing a role and that he's sparing her "40 years of disappointments."

The only disappointment is that Sophie let him back into her life for the second time.

She, understandably, shuts the door in his face, leaving him out in the New York streets.

And don't get it twisted sis. I wake up every morning next to a headscarf and coconut oil. I'm married to a black queen. Not that it's any of your business.
